The essays provide insight into the relevant topics of our day, and they offer a man's perspective on how to deal with pressing issues that many men must grapple with in society as it is now. Everything from infidelity to integrity to fatherhood are covered, and it assists one in taking a step back before acting without thinking, which is all too prevalent in our society today. These are wonderful essays that cover much needed topics, and this book deserves a spot on the bedside table. The essays are the thinking mans' food for thought, offering a full course menu with something for everyone to enjoy!

An Honest Emotional Journey

Firstly, I think that a disclaimer is in order. If any readers are expecting Delsey Prodigal to be like Lloyd's other novel, Cassie's Hope, they will be in for a shock. Where Cassie was an innocent, youthful read, Delsey is geared much more towards adults. There are sexual themes throughout, so it is not advised that young readers of Cassie's Hope attempt this novel.
However, Delsey Prodigal was a very good read. It was very emotional at times, tackling heavy topics like cancer, loss of a child, and other such dilemmas. There were times when I had to set the book down for a bit, because some of these issues hit very close to home in a personal way. I will say, though, that Lloyd's approach to these subjects was a very honest one. In her writing, she lays these topics all out on the table, to be explored thoroughly in the emotional state that they deserve. Nothing is sugar coated, and while some may see that as a bad thing, I find it oddly refreshing. It is written as "This is how it is, how it really is, but okay, now we're going to talk about it. We're going to go deep into this and figure it out together." In some ways, it was almost an odd sort of therapy.
Delsey is an emotional journey, to say the least. I shed tears a few times over this fictitious family and their sad plights. In some ways, I felt that they mirrored my own family and experiences. Sue Lloyd is such a captivating writer for this reason; that she writes in such a bare, exposed way that makes her stories so relatable. I will most definitely be looking out for more of her work in the future.

Review of Delsey Prodigal

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story about the power of redemption. It has been said before that sometimes one must lose himself to find himself, and that certainly rings true of the main character, Tom. He is determined to have the life he thinks he wants and deserves, but due to changing circumstances, the pendulum begins to swing in the opposite direction, leaving Tom to reexamine his life.
The character development in Delsey Prodigal is well done! Kudos to the author for a wonderful job! As I read, I found myself smiling during the good times and tearing up at the sad times. I really enjoy it when an author is able to develop their characters well enough for me to empathize with them, but at the same time, not drag the storyline to build the identities of the characters. Delsey Prodigal is a fine example of this balance. Happy reading!

A Powerful Story of Failure and Redemption

This is an excellent study of character. How does a moral, well brought up young man fall into a life of drugs and gambling? Ms. Lloyd has you walk in her character's shoes for the duration of the story and you can see how easily it all happens. In a way this is a coming of age book or should I say a coming 'into enlightenment' book. A fine read with well developed characters and a well researched plot. (I was given this book for an unbiased review.)

"Bewitcher". But wait, there's more!

Being a devoted fan of Ms. Dearie's Leger the cat sleuth cozy mysteries, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this trilogy which began with "Cherry Lips". I did enjoy that book but I have to admit that I like "Bewitcher" just a bit more. Maybe it's b/c several unanswered questions from book 1 were revealed. Maybe it's b/c it has so many twists & turns that I didn't have time to get bored. Possibly & probably, b/c it's a combination of both of these things. I learned the origin of all the cats around & about the castle. I also discovered more about Cerise's mother. These came as no huge surprise as well as most other revelations. However, Ms. Dearie has given us a delightful fairy tale woven with magic, witchcraft, deceit & a glimpse into the dark side that often accompanies such things. Then there's the love stories that seem to knit the very fiber of this narrative into an intriguing reading experience. Of course, Ms. Dearie leaves us wonder what comes next with the cliffhanger ending to this second book in the trilogy. All I can add is that I can hardly wait to find out how this magical love story comes to a conclusion in book 3.

Together is a beautiful, personal

Together is a beautiful, personal, human autobiography of precious Americana everyone should take time from their busy lives to read and absorb. Joyce Sorensen is not only a gifted writer, consummate for detail and so colorful in bringing her story close to her readers, but vulnerable, sensitive and uncannily able to juxtapose the microcosm of her own marriage with the importance of the bigger picture of surrounding historical events. Her husband Dick's letters are individual marriage counseling sessions for us all. I could not help but be inspired to be a far better husband, partner and father than I have been. Dick's passion, unplumbed depth of love for Joyce, fidelity and ethical conduct amidst the stress of a grim wartime environment are the qualities we as Americans need to emulate. Even so, Joyce never preaches, but in fact simply presents Dick as he was between 1950-54, his true self that not only kept him sane and hopeful, but carried Joyce through her own emotional and interpersonal battles back at the home front in Eugene. Joyce is not arrogant or detached in her prose, but consistently honest and exposes even the so called "dirtier" side of a life-long relationship that only demonstrates how we evolve during marriage, compounded by nuances of mood and emotion, age and outside pressures that affect our careers and families. Together is in many ways, a story of all of us, because in Dick's tireless letters filled with anguish and longing and Joyce's life with her mother, career and raising a daughter, we can all see experiences we relate to in some form or another. As I reflect on my own marriage, I can hope that in our golden years, whether in illness or health, my wife and I, like Dick and Joyce, can comfort each other with fond memories and loving remarks, as we gaze into the glow of sunset. Love is a Verb

Joyce Sorensen has written love story stretching over more than six decades. Joyce and Dick met in high school. They dated. In spite of an early attraction, they were slow to become an item. Joyce's parents did not approve of Dick. The two came from very different backgrounds.
Their love for each other helped them overcome many difficulties. The author takes us through the agonies of being separated by the Korean War, the joys of being reunited, and the adjustments needed to pick up life together after the long separation.
She candidly describes the challenges of being a "widow with a husband," during the years of Dick's Alzheimers, and their emotional reunion during his final months.
This story shows us true love is a verb. There are lessons to be learned from the acts of love surmounting the obstacles along the way.
Joyce Sorensen has given us a gift.

This marvelous memoir recounts first the early life of two young people, whose backgrounds couldn't be more disparate. They fall in love, only to have their romance thwarted at every step. First, "Mother" does all she can to end Joyce and Dick's relationship before it can blossom. When that fails, karma sends Dick to Korea shortly after Joyce gives birth to their first child. Joyce is forced to live at home with her parents due to lack of money to go elsewhere, while her abusive mother manipulates the situation to her own will. Meanwhile, Dick deals with the bureaucracy and sometimes bizarre events taking place around him during the war. The saving grace through it all is Dick's letters home. His poetic, loving words keep Joyce afloat, enduring each day with a single thought: Dick will be home soon and they can begin their life together again.

He finally returns, life improves slowly, until they are finally on their own and live well for many years. However, Alzheimer's creeps into Dick's life, and ultimately he is separated from Joyce again. However, a miraculous turn of events near the end of his days allows Dick's lucidity and poetic nature to return, and they celebrate their love for one another again before he dies.

I really enjoyed this memoir. Written in a factual style, the book documents beautifully the events and emotions and includes portions of Dick's actual letters, which are some of the most poetic expressions of love I've ever read. The counterpoint of their different backgrounds and experiences works perfectly.

The best

When I was younger my Mom used to read me a book until I fell asleep. As I grew older, I began to read myself to sleep. As things changed only one thing stayed constant, my favorite books are still Andrew Lang's Fairy books. The Yellow Fairy book is a collection of 48 fairy tales written the way they were supposed to be written. Each tale ranges in length anywhere from a couple of pages up to about 20. The tales are fairly easy reads, but they don't lose any of their appeal. The book also contains several wonderful illustrations.
Some of the stories include: The Six Swans, Story of the Emperor's New Clothes, The Crow, The Cat and the Mouse in Partnership, The Three Brothers, The Magic Ring, How to Tell a True Princes, Thumbelina, and more.

I would suggest reading this book, I love it!

A bright multicultural selection

With tales such as The Blue Mountains, The Cat and the Mouse in Partnership, The Dragon and His Grandmother, Fairer-than-a-Fairy, The Flower Queen's Daughter, The Glass Axe, How To Tell a True Princess, and many others how can anyone not find this book fun to read? Once again, Lang edits a book full of fairy tales from many lands that will entertain children and adults. The black and white illustrations are also superb.

Leaving behind the well-knowns for some incredible complexity

What makes this particular volume of Lang's collection remarkable is its collection of quite unknown stories. While we all love "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Cinderella", there is nothing wrong with venturing for more complex stories, and that is what this volume provides.

I have not researched these, but I am under the impression that many of these stories were actually "written". I'm not sure how everyone will take that threat to oral folklore, but good fantasy is good fantasy, and I enjoy reading a fairy tale-esque story with extra complexity that still holds the same aura.

The illustrations are gorgeous, as usual, and display intricacies that fit the stories superbly.

Perhaps a more wild collection, but for that I love it all the more.

Simply a great read!

Love this author and was glad to see she had another book out. The Queen of Broken Things is beautifully written with a great story that sucks you in. The characters are really interesting. It's a book that really makes you feel. Another triumph for Monika Basile. Can't wait to see what's next.

Raw, Real and Rewarding

In the style of "She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb, this book similarly captures the rawness, the reality, the struggles in life of a woman trying to make the most of her circumstances with the limited resources, knowledge, and family support that she has. Despite enduring dysfunction within her non-traditional family unit and ridicule from the community, Mina perseveres in the only ways she knows how. This story provoked me to lash out at Mina for her complacency, and for her tolerance of chaos, disrespect and abuse from the other characters. However, at the same time, unknowingly, and perhaps subconsciously, I gained a level of understanding that it is not as easy as I think to just walk away, or to speak up, or to make changes in life when you are in the thick of it. It really reinforced the notion for me that people do endure things for long periods of time, not because they want to, but because it's just unrealistic to expect changes overnight. Despite her complacency and silence, I still found myself rooting for Mina along the way. Her patience is something to be admired, because ultimately it is her patience and love for others that reward her. A great lesson. I highly recommend.

With her help, along with a few other medical professionals, lots of research and trial and error, we managed to gradually figure out the underlying cause of our children’s problems.

An excellent resource for vetting dietary issues in children

As the mother of a special needs child, I find that I am always eager to read up on the “next” big theory that might make life easier for him. There was once a time when I would have fit right into the Gurued out label. Even a time when my husband and I blamed our son’s issues on our inexperience as parents. We know differently now and a huge weight has been lifted. Our home life is an ensuing struggle for typical, but our pendulum is swinging in the right direction.

Whilst I have to say that I found parts of this book to have a bit of a preachy tone, I also recognize in it the absolute joy a parent feels when they have found something that works and that need to share it with those who could benefit from it. The best parenting advice I have ever received has been anecdotal in nature and often stuns my son’s medical team as something so simple that can have far reaching effects. As always it doesn’t work for everyone, but when it does, it is a wondrous thing.

This book advocates for a Feingold style elimination diet, one used by the Royal Prince Albert Hospital in Sydney Australia (referred to throughout the book as the RPAH diet). Even when diet is not the underlying cause, a healthier diet is always a better choice for children as well as their parents and the authors do a good job of laying out this diet plan. The first few sections of the book deal primarily with making it work. Ways to ascertain what dietary issues a child might have and even a few seemingly simple recipes. Of particular note are exhaustive tables outlining foods in various areas of sensitivities. Also helpful is the detailed information on ear infections and reflux issues and how they can affect children and their behavior along with ways doctors can miss what should be easy diagnoses in these areas.

This book does take into account that no two children are alike and I do especially enjoy the advice to trust your instinct as the person who knows your child best. I personally have discovered that when the professionals and I disagree most they most often find for themselves that my initial reaction was the correct one. Also important is the advice to parent your child as you see fit and not worry how you look to outsiders. Not always easy in a culture of many special needs issues, mommy wars and experts at every turn.

Handy and concise guide for parents of children when they are difficult

I have three children, and all of them are different. Different personalities and different physical reactions to the same environmental factors. Sometimes they can't sleep, sometimes they get rashes, sometimes they are irritable. Never at the same time.

For a long while I just marked this down as the expected behavioural ticks of young children - and often it is. However this book helped me to understand it could actually be what I am feeding them that significantly contributes to these factors.

This book is a handy guide to all these factors and how to overcome them. No two children are the same. There will be much trial and error, but eventually you will nail the problem by reference to this Ready-Reckoner. For example, I had no idea previously what sort of impact preservatives in every day food have on sensitive systems, like those of children who haven't yet developed full immunity. The book is concise, easy to read and affordable. I highly recommend it.

Drugs and surgery aren't always the answer

My son started developing pimple-like pustules on his skin from about 6 months of age. We took him to a variety of doctors and they all recommended surgical removal. My wife and I were reluctant to go down this route and started researching a lot of the topics covered in this book, through a simple change of diet my son's skin has cleared up dramatically. Before putting your child through invasive surgery or feeding them prescription drugs, check this book out.

Loved it! Together at last for their HEA.

I read this book as part of the anthology Vampire Romance Boxed Set: For the Love of the Vampire which I received an ARC copy of in exchange for my honest review.

This very well might be my favorite book in the anthology. Luckily, in general, the anthology significantly improved for the last three books. The book ends HEA with no cliffhanger. Overall, it's a happy book. The book included plenty of steamy sex, but not quite so over-the-top that I'd classify it as erotica. Samantha (owl shifter) and Troy (vampire) have known each other since they were kids. They were best friends and right when it began to become something more, they were ripped apart. Now Sam is back in town and Troy is not letting her go, especially when they discover that they're fated mates (go figure, right? Sam has wanted to end up with Troy for as long as she can remember). Since leaving, Sam has become a published PNR writer and had one particularly awful relationship, turning her off to vampires. So imagine her disappointment when she discovers that's exactly what Troy now is. But they overcome it and make a great couple. I could feel the love between them (more than I did in any of the other books in the anthology). I loved the story of this book as well as the characters. They were well-developed, complex, imperfect, and real. Something I also loved is that, with the exception of Craig, the book was full of honest people with good intentions. It was an incredibly uplifting and hopeful book. I am also a huge fan of Cera, who works for Troy. She is just a hoot and half. She is a little spastic, 100% genuine, and entirely endearing. I give this book two thumbs up and 5 stars.

Inspiration meets Tragedy in Chicago!

In this amazing short story, George Wilder Jr tells the heartbreaking tale of a young man trying to survive in the urban jungle of Chicago. Both inspiring and tragic, the plight of Atticus Steele Jr. Is told in a very realistic way. The author writes with passion, and it is obvious he knows Chicago well. His understanding of the turmoil of many African American youths is grounded in his social activism. The love of literature is a main theme in this story. It reminded me of Saul Bellows Augie March, a classic Chicago novel.I won't give away the ending, but it really surprised me. George Wilder Jr. Is a talented writer, and I look forward to reading more of his fiction. Great job!

This beautiful, tragic story of young Atticus Steele, Jr. lover of books and dreamer of dreams, is well worth a read. A young man with dreams, wishes, and hopes of a good and fruitful future is also a kid with seriously bad luck. The true power of this story is in fact his tenacity, survival instincts, and inspiring determination against all odds. Atticus must read books. He just must.

I love this series!

I have loved this series from the first installment and this book was just as fun as the first. If you have not read any of the Wiccan House novellas before, they are basically a paranormal Fantasy Island, in my opinion. This particular installment focuses on Serena. I was very intrigued by this character when I first "met" her in book one and was excited to learn more about her. One of the things I particularly liked about this book of the series is that it really included people from the first few books and it was nice to see them travel on their journies, as we discover more about Serena's journey. I especially liked how we saw more of Rekkus and to some extent, Dana. He has been a favorite of mine since book one and it was great to see more of the surly tiger.

You definitely do not need to read the previous books to enjoy this one. I do, however,highly recommend you give them a try, especially book one because it connects the most with this one. These novellas are long enough for you to get the complete story, but not too long that you feel bad when you do not want to put them down. Each book focuses on different characters and there are multiple authors contributing to the series, which I find super fun.

Great addition that has visits from prior couples!! Don't Miss!

Was this a short story? It sure didn't feel like a short story. Are you sure?

The mermaids are living under a curse. To procreate they must steal the soul of a man at the time of conception. Serena has no desire to follow in her sister's steps and refuses to kill innocent men. Unfortunately her mother is the queen and has given her a year to secure the line of succession or she will be forced to mate. Time is running out and she turns to the Rowan siblings and The Wiccan Haus Resort and Spa for help.

Kaleb knows he is not crazy. Yes, he may have PTSD, but he knows what he saw; a mermaid drag his diving partner down into the depths, never to be seen again. He just made the mistake to telling the truth and now is taking forced R&R at the resort. The required classes and instruction are driving him nuts, but when he meets a beautiful woman that sets him on fire, his little trip just got a lot more interesting. What will happen when he discovers that she is the same type of creature that killed his best friend and has possibly ruined his career? Can he look past the hurt of the past and forge ahead to the future?

Siren's Serenade is such a smooth read. The plot is solid and exciting, the sex is hot and the characters are to die for. In regards to the characters, I know personally that I want to get to know them and call them friends. The contributing authors are doing a spectacular job transporting me into the Wiccan Haus universe and Ms. Eastwick has written my favorite addition to date.

I enjoyed this story from the very first page. Even though it was about Serena and Kaleb, I also got to revisit the siblings and other wonderful characters from previous books. That aspect made this story all the more special. They blended well with the main couple and didn't intrude on their story. They only enhanced it.

I'm still shocked that this was a short story. While I enjoy short stories to fill in the little windows of time I may have that won't warrant a full novel, I can't recall a short story being more fulfilling than Siren's Serenade. I was left giddy and the epilogue was the icing on the cake!

Don't miss this beautiful sea glass gem. Siren's Serenade is richly colored and spellbinding. I hope you will be as drawn in as I was. I would suggest that you read the prior books in the series first though. Without them you will not understand why I enjoyed this book so much. While it is not completely necessary, you minus well dive right in and get caught up in the storm. The Wiccan Haus series is a treasure that needs to be enjoyed to its fullest!

Wiccan Haus Scores Again!

Well, I wrote this really wonderful, erudite review of this book and my computer crashed and I lost it before I posted it. :( So let me sum up.

I LOVE Wiccan Haus books! The world is so compellingly designed with enough interesting regular characters to provide continuity and such a fun concept for Paranormal Romance! What could be more fun than a magical New England spa that caters to paranormals in need of healing and stress relief along with unsuspecting humans? Dominique Eastwick penned the initial book, Shifting Hearts, and follows up here in book 4 with a new couple.

Serena, the sexy mermaid, made her initial appearance in book 1, but is back for some healing and romance of her own. I simply adore her. She is such a fun mix of ingenue and siren (literally!). And her love interest Kaleb the sexy Coast Guard swimmer has plenty of reasons to distrust a mermaid. I totally enjoyed watching them get over themselves in order to come together as a very real couple.

But the real strength of the book lies in its the development of the secondary characters and fleshing out the world of Wiccan Haus. Our mermaid antagonists come out of a wonderfully drawn culture and social structure that provides the conflict. Even the were-sharks, though really awful, have reasons for their actions that come directly out of their paranormal nature. I really did enjoy those elements of the book very much.

So if you have a crush on Rekkus or Cyrus, I know I do, you'll love Kaleb and the newest installment to the Wiccan Haus series. I haven't missed one!!
