About the Author
A native of the tropical island of Jamaica, Darien Marie Barnaby-Toussaint discovered her talent in writing, mainly plays and novels, at a tender age in middle school. Though introverted, being the creative expert that she was, she would watch other people doing things and then find creative ways in her mind to improve them. She acted in pantomimes, church skits, and school skits, some of which she still writes and choreographs. She enjoys reading novels and the writing of skits, plays, and children's sermons. She was taught to be obedient and courteous to others by her grandmother, with whom she lived for the early years of her life. Then Darien was a mixture of half-cup gullible and half-cup too trusting, thus she would believe anything that anyone said. Her extensive faith in people has brought her much disappointment in life, and though Darien has had a lot of rough times and struggled with the demons of distrust, fear, and brokenness, she has seen a lot of miracles through it all. God has answered her many prayers but has also put her faith to test a number of times. Through this, she has learnt to walk closer with God through his divine intervention in her life. Darien has been a Seventh-day Adventist Christian for the past twenty-four years. She is married to Reid Toussaint, a native of Dominica, and together they have one daughter, Talisa. She holds a BA in elementary education and has been teaching for the past twenty years. It is her sincere prayer that God will use this book to heal and restore people who are broken -hearted. She also hopes that others will recognize that God still works miracles, and that He is interested in every aspect of their lives.

Excellent Debut Novel

Nick and Abe is a character-driven story about what happens when Lucifer and God decide to spend a year on Earth, as regular people. Nick is a highly-driven advertising executive and Abe takes a job as a janitor in a law office building.

Abe inadvertently meets the love of his life, Emily, while working in the building and their relationship grows. Nick becomes addicted to amphetamines and has to check himself into rehab.
Things happen along the way to make the father and son examine their relationship and work to try to fix it.

I really loved this book. The characters were amazing and the dialogue was spot on. I liked how the story progressed and I'm not ashamed to admit that one part almost made me cry. (Not an easy thing to do!)

Knocking on humans' door

First off, I must confess, God and Satan represented as being human is a favorite of mine. I’m by no means an expert on the subject, but George Burns comes immediately to mind. And then there are the charismatic, nearly-human Lucifer adaptations by George Bernard Shaw and Mikhail Bulgakov (from which the Rolling Stones snagged the phrase “sympathy for the devil”). Lex H Jones has added a new variation on the theme. He has done a masterful job of bringing God and Lucifer to mortal, quirky, doubt-filled life. A family drama (estranged father and son) and a creative biblical exposition, Jones’s novel is delightfully witty and deeply intelligent. And while it is impossible to avoid the God/Lucifer clichés, Jones uses these established characterizations and physical descriptions as both parody and “truth.” Lucifer (the Nick from the title) smokes cigarettes and is a selfish bastard. God (Abe) is a janitor, cleaning up the daily mess of the law firm where he works and is a lowly, yet humble, worker. There are inherent dangers in using these truths and parodies; however, Jones pulls it off brilliantly. The story is told with compassion and sensitivity. The characters of Abe and Nick are believable in their cunning and naivety (both of them, to certain extents). The best thing (well one of myriad best things) about NICK AND ABE is the removal of all the superfluous nonsense of contemporary organized religions. This is the non-fluffed story of a father and a son, whose issues have been left unresolved since right after the beginning. An excellent novel and an excellent story. Oh, and the ending, well, yeah, I’ll leave it at excellent.

A Gem with a Lot of Soul ...

Every now and then I find a diamond in the rough, a little gem with a lot of heart. I don’t know why I can sense when a book is close to an author’s heart, I just do. So no matter what negativities I might find during my reading, I just … Well, I just know that this book or that book or whatever book is a personal exploration of sorts; a soul laid bare for the reader. Lex H. Jones’ Nick and Abe came across as one of those books to me. Whether my assumption is correct in this regard is a whole other matter, but due to this feeling I must admit that I overlooked a lot of the editing oopsies.

It should be noted that Nick and Abe by Lex H. Jones is an indie book, but this doesn’t make it any less enjoyable.

Imagine if God and the Devil decided to join us here on Earth, to lead normal lives (as normal as one would imagine deities to lead) and to lose all their powers. Imagine how they would react to the typical trials and tribulations we, as humans, have to deal with on a daily basis. What ensues is a hilarious account of ‘what if’ as the ultimate Good and Evil sees things through a new perspective.

I really enjoyed the book, and I truly hope that the author continues to develop his voice as an author. Although there’s a lot of room for improvement, the storytelling is excellent and will pull readers in from the get-go.

Definitely try to get your hands on this one if you’re in the mood for something a little different, that explores Joan Osborne’s hit – What if God was One of Us.

I Should Have Node Better With a Girl Like You

I hate stories that are supposed to take place in our world, on our planet, and in our time (or thereabouts) that have sentient animals in them. I mean I really hate them. Or so I thought. In the past twelve months, I have read two novels that I liked immensely that had such creatures in them. Both were debut novels. The off-kilter All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders is the newer one of them. An amazing and beautiful tale, it’s the story of Patricia Delfine and Laurence Armstead—and of a place in space called Earth.

A very, very character-driven book, much of it is a plot-not story that becomes a plot-knot story. If that sentence sounds like a riddle, it’s because the book rides on one, like Bellerophon on Pegasus. There’s a lot of talking and philosophy that outweighs the action. I say this not as a complaint, but as a compliment to how interesting the novel is because of this imbalance. But there is also balance in the way it magically and logically sits in two genres: science fiction and fantasy. They are blended together like an Everly Brothers harmony.

The prose is deceptive. It uses slang expressions, and esoteric science terms, and what I call “why adjectives?”—adjectives made by adding “y” to a noun, like “perfumey”—but it all works, even if I still don’t exactly know what “dubthrash” means (let this admission be made an informal part of the record :) ). I was definitely immersed in the story, not sure where it was going (just like life), and fascinated by how much I recognized from my past, even if I didn’t recall it before. A fundamental theme—do we try to control nature or serve it—resonated profoundly with me. Questions about what is worth saving and in what form still churn in my brain, agitated, foaming and fomenting. It’s satisfying to read a book that hits this many entangling cognitive and affective nodes. And to all I have loved and love I say: there are things in this story I should have node before; but it’s never too late, even when it is.

One minute you're chuckling at the oddball narrative, the next minute it stabs you in the guts

All The Birds in The Sky is a quirky, comedic urban fantasy that isn't afraid to go to some dark places. It's like a mix of Lev Grossman's The Magicians and a generous helping of Pratchett-esque zany ridiculousness. One minute you're chuckling at the oddball narrative, the next minute it stabs you in the guts.

The story involves talking birds and AI, which are difficult to pull off in the same book. But Anders wisely makes humor a big element of the tale, and pulls it off with panache. It's a wonderfully quirky read, and quite a page-turner too.

One caveat - the first few chapters are messy and a bit self-conscious. Anders finds her voice once the assassin appears (chapter 5 or thereabouts), and then the book just flows. Oh and I forgot to mention, I *love* the assassin. It feels like he stepped right out of the pages of a Discworld novel.

Original and Creative and Just Good

One of the most creative and original books I've read in a while. If you like either sci fi or fantasy you will love this book. I couldn't put it down and kept thinking about it after I was finished.
I loved Patricia; one of the best female protaganists I've ever read.
Some people mentioned that this is young adult fiction - I didn't know that while reading it, but it's perfectly fine for adults.
Best book I've read in a while.

Solid advice on child rearing

"How Habits Influence Children" presents a most interesting plan for creating a positive environment for rearing your children. Written by Anna Andersen, a mother of two young children, it stresses the importance of establishing positive habits. Working on the assumption that habits and routines are an important part of our development and something that will always be part of our lives, Ms. Andersen shows the reader how to create an environment where positive habits and routines can and will lead to positive outcomes. As she says, "A good routine can really make the difference between a morning full of harmony and happiness and a morning with only tears or tensions."

The author draws on her own experience as a mom to show how you can create positive routines and avoid those that are negative. The third chapter of the book, "How," discusses the key factors in a successful routine or habit as well as what to do to break a bad habit in your children. (Her suggestion for getting your child to break the pacifier habit is quite interesting.) In Chapter 4, she deals with lunch and dinner routines and bedtime routines and how to avoid the word "No" while still getting the results you hope to achieve.

This is a short but to the point book, one that can be read in an hour or less, but which contains important advice that, if put into practice, will have a long-term positive effect on your children.

An excellent book that will help parents raise children so they can be all they can be

Ever since people began to think about their behavior, they realized that most of what they do is based on their habits: they act without thinking, prompted by the routines they developed in the past. The famed pagan philosopher Aristotle living in the fourth century BCE advised people to develop habits according to the golden mean, not acting at one extreme or another, so that when they will need to act in the future, they will be acting properly even without thinking. The Jewish philosopher Maimonides said the same thing in the twelfth century and so did Mahatma Gandhi more recently. Gandhi explained that thoughts become words, words become actions, actions become habits, which leads to proper behavior, values, and destiny.

Anna Andersen shows in this important, very practical, easy to read book, how we can help our children become as good as they can be by developing their habits, their routines. She shows how human life and virtually all human acts are based on habits. Why the development of habits is important in early childhood. How habits support discipline. How to develop good habits and break bad habits. How to say “no,” and much more. She offers many examples such as dinner and bedtime and storytelling habits.

This is an excellent book that will help parents raise their children properly and even change their own lives.

Good parenting means using both sides of your brain

Pound for pound, this is the best parenting book you'll ever read. In fifty pages, it sums up the essence of good parenting - enjoying your children while raising them to be decent, responsible adults. It's not easy, but it's not impossible either.

The author is a creative woman and a free spirit. She wanted to have fun with her children. To help them develop their own creativity. And above all else to raise them to be wise, loving people. She certainly didn't want the restrictions of iron-clad routines, either for herself or for children.

Then she came up against the reality of parenting - it takes the stamina of a mule. Some mundane, non-creative tasks (like eating, bathing, cleaning, and bedtime) MUST be accomplished on a daily basis. How do you get your children to perform those tasks quickly and (more-or-less) happily so that you have the time and energy for the fun stuff and the important stuff? She learned that the answer is organization.

Setting up routines for her household wasn't cruel and unusual punishment because (and some parents never learn this) children crave routine. To a tiny child experiencing everything for the first time, the KNOWN represents safety and security. In a short time, the routines become habits leaving time and energy to concentrate on really connecting as human beings. She tells of a time when she was sick and her two older sons (then 2 and 5) were able to carry on themselves because they knew the routines. What a feeling of confidence that must have given them!

This is not pie-in-the-sky theory by some parenting "expert" but wisdom from a woman who's been in the trenches with three little boys and lived to tell about it. She walks you through her ways of helping her sons set goals and work toward them. As she points out, this skill is basic to any achievement and the happiest children are not those with the most toys, but those who have experienced the pride of accomplishment.

If you want to raise confident, caring children who understand the value of effort and the rewards of cooperation, you couldn't do better than to read this book and follow Ms. Anderson's advice. The ideas in this book could help every family become happier and more closely connected. You have nothing to lose but chaos, tension, and conflict and surely you can do with less of those, can't you?

A great installment in the series

This was a great read, building on everything that was enjoyable in the first book. Aleron Kong is clearly growing as an author. He keeps the reader's interest throughout the book and as the character has grown, as the stage has widened, the challenges have exceeded any growth by a wide margin. The author has succeeded in maintaining dramatic tension. The character seems to have more to lose, to be on the precipice of greater success or heartache with each chapter, which is a nice balancing act. In many stories in the genre, the mechanics overwhelm or the gains become increasingly pointless. Not so, here.

Aleron Kong has avoided many of the pitfalls of the genre, deftly balancing character growth and world-building with challenge that adds to the dramatic tension. This is a nice trick, considering we generally know the conventions of the genre, which usually means we know what to expect next.. but not so much here. Forging is like watching a poker tournament where the game started with a spotlight on one table, where the tournament has 128 tables with 8 players each. In the first book the main character made it past the first round. He has some winnings from the first round but the stakes just keep increasing. In poker, as they say, you're playing your opponents. Here, in round two, every one seated at the table was a winner from the first round. His opponents are smarter. There are familiar characters from the first round, but interesting new characters from this table, and some glimpse into the challenges he'll face if he makes it past this round. The outcome is becoming more highly speculative.

Every now and then the main characters play smart for a few hands and then the author has them go all in, putting everything on the table. It's fun to watch the characters lose a hand, now and then, watch the interplay between the characters as they fold a hand or raise the ante. It's fun watching the author double the blinds. It's fun to watch the author throw an interesting prize into the center of the table that changes the game ...

I'm looking forward to Alliances, the next installment in the series.

Ramblings of a madman

Take from my review what you will. It is just my opinion, and opinions change from one person to the next. This book was believable for at least 1 reason. For me there were many, but everyone who thinks it through should agree that at least this one point was consistent : progression. If you end up in a cave trying to solve thing for a reward you would stay for days if you were a hardcore gamer. I have. And if the people with me were friends i would stay longer. The simple answer is, if you want a story where the mc is ridiculously op and kills dungeons daily, read something else. This book delves into the human aspects of the litrpg genre. What would you honestly do? How would time progress to an outside veiwer? Look no further, aleron answers honestly.

Another excellent LITRPG book in the Chaos Seeds series!

An exciting follow-up to The Land: Founding, this book takes us on some adventures in The Land that we won't soon forget! Throughout battles, dungeon exploration, building up a community and dealing with life's journey, Aleron's books continually keep me entertained and feeling like I'm right there with the characters - the story just flows. Keep up the good work sir!

Causes to some neurological and behavioral conditions are still currently unknown to experts. This book definitely shed light to some of them. It is both informative and actionable in its approach to understand and prevent neurological conditions. The author's drive on illuminating awareness to holistic therapy for neurological conditions is certainly very interesting and practical. Not only does it inform, but the book educates and cautions people about hazardous toxins and dangerous chemicals and their effects towars those who are expose to them.

Something we should be reading instead of just the labels we buy

There are some really great lessons to be learned here. Personally, I NEVER knew about any of this. I did some further investigation into the matter and all holds true here. It is absolutely amazing at what affects of the chemicals we use in our household can do to others. I had no idea about the severity and am thankful I reviewed this book. This is a very interesting book and something that we should all consider reading instead of just reading the labels on our items we buy.

This book really caught my attention. ADHD often begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. It may contribute to low self-esteem, troubled relationships, and difficulty. Glad that I found this book. Everything I need to know about to prevent adhd is here.
