Great selection of short stories for bedtime

The stories are great for short stories at bedtime that each have a lesson.
We often read the stories and then discuss why the characters behaved as they did, and what lesson they learned.
My 4 and 7 year old both enjoy them, and learn at a different level from the stories.

Buddha's apprentice at bedtime is another great book with similar stories.
There is some violence(killing) in the Jakata tales, where as the Buddha's apprentice rewrites the tales to remove the violence. My children like to compare the "same" stories between the two books.
Both are great, but some people may prefer an non-violent version.

Well, this was a surprisingly good book. I say surprised because I was a little nervous about the title: The 9 Steps to Finding Your Perfect Mate—A Top Salesperson’s System and Secrets to Finding Your Ideal Mate—it had me wondering if love can be parsed by the language of business? And could love really be dissected and discovered through a formulaic, systematic approach, using plans and steps evaluating procedures?
After reading the book I discovered the answer was: of course not.
Love is love and can’t be uncovered scientifically.
That being said, The 9 Steps shows a way to have a better chance at finding true love through the use of a well reasoned and smart approach. It cuts through the mayhem of dating. It centers and prepares the individual and puts a person in the best position possible to find love. I would highly recommend this book and have already done so a number of times.

Wonderful epic fantasy with some surprising plot twists

I have to admit, after reading the first novel in this series, The Last Whisper of the Gods, I thought I knew where everything was going. I was wrong. The Curse in the Gift takes a few of the characters in expected directions but there are some real surprises. As much as I liked The Last Whisper of the Gods, this is a better read. It’s faster paced with more action and the story is more complex. The characters develop nicely. Magic is more evident. The cliffhangers from the first book are all tied up. A new villain is introduced. The stakes become higher. If there’s a nit-pick, it’s that Berardinelli’s prose is sometimes wordy and there are a few awkward sentences. Still, compared to a lot of books I read these days (many of which come out of major publishing houses), this is as good or better. Berardinelli’s style isn’t up there with Martin or Rowling or Donaldson but he’s better than Brooks and dozens of others.

The Curse in the Gift is obviously designed to lead directly into the third book but there’s a sense of closure in the way this one ends. It doesn’t cut off at an inappropriate point. The first book is a good read but, the deeper I got into this one, the more apparent it became that The Last Whisper of the Gods was setup. This is where the meat can be found and it’s a great meal. Can’t wait to see how it all ends.

Running out of body parts.

This is actually a pretty good book. The story is good as are most of the interactions but it does have some flaws. The biggest two IMHO are the near omnipotent and omniscient antagonist (not in absolute power) but in that the worlds magic rules don't apply to him. This is problematic because the physical "cost" of using magic, the physical destruction of the casters body is the only limiting factor. While everyone else pays the cost the antagonist seems immune. The second is the need to torture the antagonist of ridiculous levels. At this point he's lost a hand, arm and leg, while the antagonist is in perfect condition. Of course this is the normal story arc but it felt done to extreme in this book. It made me want fast forward and skip to when the antagonist torture ends and the evenly matched contest begins

Nantucket Island does it all!

I'm a Nantucket Islander. Mary Hills Munroe was my first friend. We were born the same year and lucky enough to grow up on a magic island. When World War II began Mary's family left the island when her Dad joined the Navy. For Mary this was the beginning of years of problems, trauma, and sadness. It was her whaling ancestors that gave her the courage, fortitude and strength to survive all. She never lost her sense of humor and her love for helping children. Despite all the problems it's a great read as nothing gets her down, she always finds a positive solution and if she does get down, it's not for long and she comes back stronger than ever with that marvelous sense of humor. I so much enjoyed this read

I so much enjoyed this read! It was sweet and sad, and I loved bumping through Mary's life adventures with her. Munroe's poetry at the beginning of each chapter was lovely, giving a bit of insight to what you are about to read. I really loved the idea of having to find out where you came from, to know who you are. It was real, it was honest, and it is a love story to Life!! L'Chaim Mary! I am right there with you!

This is a wonderful book for parents

This is a wonderful book for parents! I have recommended it to several families and in each case the parents have been able to better understand their child's needs and have been able to establish a much closer and loving relationship with their child. I've found that this book is helpful for parents whose children have defiance and behavioral issues as well as those with attachment disorder. It is amazing how reading this story about a mother's struggle to help her little girl, helps my clients so much.

The book is has a textured cloth cover. The front cover is textured with the images of bells, a motif that is continued on the end papers inside.

The pages of the book are a thick, glossy, cream colored stock.

The illustrations by Dulac are maginificent.

Well worth the money.

Poor quality illiustrations

Though illustrated by Dulac, the illustrations as presented in this Kessinger Publishing edition are extremely disappointing. I don't recommend this edition for anyone seeking to enhance their library.

It will teach about the mental torture that is being victimized by DV. I am male so I'd focus more on the physical side of things.

It was well written with a good pov and a good message. This book might actually save people's lives.

A Reassuring Book for Troubled Times

I finished reading this book the weekend after the Dallas police murders and Ashley Blanco’s positive, hopeful messages helped me through the first days after this terrible event. During a time when we’re hearing such hateful statements being made by Americans to fellow Americans, many of these stories reminded me of the internal goodness and strength of most people.

“Rethinking relationship” has an excellent message for young people in particular. It’s usually a bad sign when someone tries to “hide” a relationship from friends and family members and so it’s important to recognize when this is happening and explore why.

“Inside the Church’s Garbage Can” reminds me of the importance of being true to our core beliefs. It’s too easy to be side-tracked and away from the focus of one’s mission.

My favorite lines come from “What dreams are Made of?” One of the biggest lies we believe is that dreaming is for those who are weak and who lose. The weight of dreams permits only stronger-minded, softer-hearted individuals to carry them. Don’t stop dreaming!

Clearly this collection of stories is written by a strong and loving person.

A Stark Contrast to Current World Events

Refreshing. Honest. Real.
Those are the sentiments that flashed through my mind whenever I picked up Ms. Blanco's book. The format makes it easy to devour - each chapter is really a short story that can be read independent of the others. I enjoyed reading a new chapter each evening. The moment I started reading a fresh page, I was immersed into the characters and the glimpse into their lives I was about to explore.
I recently flipped back to the story '85 and in the Fast Lane.' The couple is sympathetic and frankly it encourages me to think that even as I age, there's hope I will continue to grow and change and be a benefit to people around me.
My favorite line in the book is from the chapter 'People with Wings:'
***Life without the Light was no life at all.***
Timelessly true.
If you are looking for a place to build up your hope - in humanity and in our future - this is a book to sit with a spell.

Loved this book- It's for EVERYONE!

This book is a must read and a must have! The collection of short stories will resonate and connect with you in different ways regardless of your religious or spiritual faith. Each time I re-read one of the short stories, I leave with new meaning and self-reflection in my personal connection to the stories. My favorite stories so far are “You Almost Dropped your Eggs” and “Becoming More than I See.” Both are powerful, heart-warming stories about human kindness and humility, to see what lies beyond the surface and despite the internal struggles we face in our everyday lives, we can rise above our challenges. Here’s a quote from one of the stories, “Don’t Stop Dreaming. Who knows what will come of them if you pray, wait, plan, and push? Push back. You have everything you need to push back.” You will have to read the book to find out where this quote is from…

Douglas Lovos apodado como “el bendecido”. Es un autor de literatura, que nació en El Salvador, América Central y se mudó a los Estados Unidos en 1989 a la edad de doce años. Él creció en mucha pobreza en un país desgarrado por una guerra civil. El bendecido siempre ha sido apasionado por escribir libros, de poesía y cuentos sobre la gente diaria. Este es su primer libro para niños, “el encuentro de la sabiduría,” pero está trabajando con más historias basándose en su experiencia en el cristianismo. Él es un cristiano nacido de nuevo que ha servido como profesor de la clase bíblica para jóvenes adultos por muchos años. A él le encanta aprender de su clase más que lo que él puede ensenarles. A very moving, powerful, important and beautifully written book on the tragic loss of a daughter by suicide.

I happened across this book as I was looking at the category of suicide on amazon this morning. Having made the decision to read no more books on suicide (I’ve read so many I’ve lost count), I came across this book and felt an urge to purchase it. There was something about it. I only very briefly scanned the preview section before I purchased the Kindle version, which is rare for me. I usually get a sample first.

I purchased this book this morning and read it in one sitting (except for one meal and a few bathroom breaks) because I could not put it down. I’m an avid reader, but I have never read any book in one sitting in my life.

I lost my 23 year old daughter Kaitlyn to suicide 4-11-13. She was just starting her 3rd year of medical school. Unlike the author’s daughter, my daughter never gave us one single sign that she had any depression whatsoever. One day I thought she was the happiest person on earth, fulfilling her dreams, the next day she was dead from her own hands. She wrote in her note that she had been depressed all her life, hid it from us, but could no longer bear the weight of it. She never sought help.

The author’s daughter Pamela suffered from Bipolar Type I and it was very obvious the last years of her life. Her parents did all they could possibly do to help their daughter by taking her to psychiatrists, counselors, and she was on medications, but the disease took her in the end.

Though my daughter never showed signs and her daughter did, I could relate to so many things in this book. I cried several times during the reading of it. The author has suffered all the whys and what ifs and guilt and gut wrenching pain that I have and still am experiencing.

Her daughter was gifted, bright and full of love for life, just like mine was, but as she writes, mental illness can touch the life of anyone no matter their intelligence, upbringing, race, gender or anything else.

This book was heartbreaking but it should be read because it lets one see the devastation that mental illness can have on someone and the people that love them. Also, it makes one know that these illnesses can take their lives by their own hands.

Mental illness has many forms. There are many types. Some people are able to hide it, some may not. And I’ve often (so very often) wondered had I known of my own daughter’s illness, and could have gotten her help, would she still be here? The answer is maybe yes, maybe no.

I’d like to thank Joan E. Childs for pouring her heart out in this book. I have come to know her daughter through her eyes and memories and she was a beautiful person and was so loved. Her book has truly touched my heart.

Beautiful and Inspiring Read

This book should be read by anyone who's lost a loved one due to mental illness and/or suicide. As a mother, I can't imagine the pain Joan must have felt after losing her beautiful daughter. Her strength is inspiring.

A mother's tribute to her daughter

This is a true story of how Pamela, a young, beautiful psychotherapist, lived with a chronic debilitating mental illness and how her family got caught up in the whirlwind. It is also a story of how the mental health system continually failed her in not being able to provide her with any kind of useful assistance. Joan, her mother, was desperately trying to save her daughter's life but the HMOs slammed the door in her face with their refusals to cover even the most basic treatment for her bipolar illness. You will see that not much has changed since then.
You will feel Pamela's terror as she fights her demons, Joan's desperation and frustration as she searches for help for Pamela and
watch as her father and siblings stand helplessly by.
This is a book for anyone who is contemplating a career in the health care field to make them aware of the challenges ahead.
