You have to go back, Callie. You're in real danger."Go back. Danger. For two days the words haunted her. Now she was on the road, the rhythmic sound of the tires on the highway putting her into a trance. Danger, danger, danger. The minute Aunt Mallory opened the letter with an Alabama postmark, everything changed.
She didn't want to go back. Of all the nerve. She'd been exiled in New Jersey for seven years, and now Mom and Grandma Jo decided she must return at once.
Callie hit the gas pedal. The angrier she got, the faster she drove. What should have been a fourteen-hour drive due south, she'd cut to a mere ten hours. She'd never traveled so far on her own, and convincing Aunt Mallory to let her do it wasn't easy. Especially since her old Volkswagen convertible, the 'Dixie doodlebug,' had over 150,000 miles.
Her heart skipped at the road sign, 'Welcome to Alabama. The State of Surprises.' No shit, Sherlock. Not even a mile away was another green and white sign proclaiming 'Entering Central Time Zone.' More like the twilight zone.
Callie's tension eased a bit as she neared Piedmont, the small town bordering Georgia and surrounded by the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. In the gathering dusk, the rolling hills had a magical, ancient vibe. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad here. It's not like she had a choice anyway. Aunt Mallory made that clear.Mom and Grandma Jo had convinced her aunt she needed to come home where the coven could help protect her.
Callie rubbed her sore face. She'd clenched her jaw so long her temples throbbed. She consciously relaxed her facial muscles and rolled her shoulders. Much better.
The cell phone rang. Aunt Mallory again.
Callie smiled. "What? Are you going to call me every hundred miles?
"Smart aleck. Where are you now?"
"I'm about to enter the huge metropolis of Piedmont. According to its sign, the name literally means; 'the foot of the mountain.' Population: 4,964."
"Great."Aunt Mallory let out a whoosh. "I've been so worried about you falling asleep at the wheel. I still think you should have spent the night somewhere along the way. You remember how to get to Mama's house?"
"Pretty much. The GPS can help me navigate the back roads if I get lost."
"Call me if it doesn't recognize the dirt roads."
Callie rolled her eyes. "I know, I know."
Aunt Mallory sighed. "Glad you're almost there. Tell Mama and Ginnie I said 'hey'and call me when you arrive."
Callie couldn't speak around her tight throat. I'm really going to see them again. Silence haunted the air.
"It's going to be all right, Callie. They're excited to see you."
Her aunt knew her so well. She cleared her throat. "If you say so. Change of subject. I've been finding sprigs of rosemary and basil everywhere in the car.What did you do? Dig up all your herbs?"
Aunt Mallory laughed. "Guilty. We cast a protection spell in the crystal for a safe trip, and you always have your mom's amber talisman. But a little added herbal charm couldn't hurt."
"Better hope the cops don't pull me over; they'll think I'm a drug dealer."

Having read (and loved) ‘Changeling,’ I was thrilled to return to the world of southern witches and hidden worlds. Callie Bradford is a tough and resilient heroine who faces more than her fair share of trauma with courage, wit, and admirable determination. Between a strained reunion with the mother and grandmother she believes cast her aside, the revelation that she’s a burgeoning ‘super-witch,’ and the quest to determine the truth about the father she thought was dead, she’s on a collision course with more than earthly danger.
Hidden Immortal James MacLauren proves a worthy hero, trusting and aiding Callie in spite of the power she could use to bind him. I was also very pleased to read a female-centered coming of age story featuring Callie and the host of amazing and resilient women around her. Her mother and both grandmothers serve as wonderful mentors, and I adore her relationship with gal pal Skye. There are so many buddy/mentor books out there for boys and young men. It was a TREAT to have a series for girls/young women.
I also adore that Callie isn't a shy, shrinking virgin. She owns and embraces her desires. So refreshing!
Fans of paranormal romance and YA/NA should definitely check out this series!

Great Second Book in the Series!

Charmed and Dangerous is the second book in the Appalachian Series. I really like this series because the story lines are awesome and they can be stand-alone books. Some of the characters overlap and enhance each other’s stories, but you can read the books out of order. The second book actually takes place before the first book.
Magic is definitely in the Appalachian area. Callie is a witch who grew up away from her mother and grandmother for most of her life. When she was young after a particularly scary Ouija Board incident, they sent her to live with her aunt in New Jersey (completely cool with me since it’s my state) to protect her. After seven years away, her mother and grandmother demand she return because she is supposed to come into great power on her birthday on the upcoming summer solstice. Callie is awesome. She is smart, funny, loyal and one heck of a gifted witch. She grows a lot as a character throughout the novel. She starts off a little bitter and broken inside about being abandoned by her family but then grows to understand the reasons behind it and appreciates the sacrifices her family made to keep her safe.
James is great book boyfriend material. He is hot, sexy, immortal, smart, brave and lonely. He has lived a long time and had not met the right woman. He is also getting tired of constantly fighting other immortals. Then he met Callie…but he was told to stay away from witches because the consequences of getting involved with one could be terrible for an immortal. James can’t seem to stay away from Callie even though he tries his best to do just that. He soon discovers that Callie in in danger and he does his best to protect her.
I love the chemistry between Callie and James. They make a great team and it is obvious that they can handle any situation as long as they do it together. The supporting character are awesome especially, Skye, who is the lead character in Book one. It was great to see her in this book.
This book had a nice pace to it and flowed well. The story line is a unique twist on witch and immortal lore and kept my interest throughout. There was only one thing I noticed that could be different. The characters are supposed to be in junior or community college, but the way it was written seemed more like they were still in high school. Maybe community college is different in other states.
I really liked this book and I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Witchy fun, y'all!

Yes, I read this book in one evening. Why? Because as with all of this author's books, this one immediately drew me in, and I had to finish it. It was a much-needed escape from a stressful day.
The theme of this series is young women discovering their inner power and love, but not having to sacrifice one for the other. This book had some interesting familial relationships, and nothing is black and white. I won't give any spoilers, just say the characters are complex, and it was fun to see some of the ones from Changeling, which I now need to go back and re-read. I can't wait for the rest of this series!
Not convinced yet? The hero is a hottie, and Herbert brought in some interesting history and crystal and herb lore. Seriously, y'all, curl up by a fire with this book. It's a perfect read for a winter night.
