A Well-Told Fairly Tale
By Amazon Customer
This was a great retelling of the lesser known fairly tale, King Thrushbeard. Princess Rinda is arrogant and selfish, but she evolves organically within the book. Sometimes characters like her come across as annoying, but the reasons behind her negative behavior are examined and I found I could empathize with her throughout the journey.
The 'minstrel' Aleks, is fun and charming. The two neighboring kingdoms within the story, Balinore and Lioncourt, are distinctive and the author does an excellent job of world building. The plot is full of humorous and sweet moments between the two main characters.
This book is romantic without being explicit which, according to the author's notes, is very different from her other books. However, it is completely appropriate for this fairy tale. I could easily see this book as a Disney animated movie or even a live action movie. It has the classic feel and beauty of an old school Disney film. Myles should definitely write a screenplay for this book and approach Disney.
However, there are a few minor flaws. First, I wish Aleks was more fleshed out. While I understand that it was necessary to the plot for there to be a mystery surrounding Aleks, I really wished Myles had expanded on his motivations, thoughts, and feelings for Rinda.
Second, certain parts of this book seem, at least to me, to be very strongly influenced by Tolkien's The Hobbit and LOTR. If you've read the books or even seen the movies, you'll understand what I mean. It isn't necessarily bad, but I feel the author could have been more creative.
Finally, and it really is a minor point, but the color of the minstrel's eyes change from brown to blue halfway through the story before returning to brown at the end. I only mention this because eye and hair color are important plot points, especially to the princess.
All around, this is a very good book for a light read. I would recommend it.

Bland fairy tale with a few sweet moments
By melreads
I never read nor heard the original King Thrushbeard tale, but the basic elements of most fairy tale romances are pretty easy to pick out. Girl meets boy in disguise, they fall in love, girl finds out boy is actually handsome prince, happily ever after. You can see it coming from page 1. In this case, the fun bit is the journey.
The plot is written well enough, but the character development tended to be paced oddly. Our female lead would go two chapters being whiny and self-absorbed (while the male lead was overwhelmingly patient and wonderful to the point of unbelievable) and then would just suddenly be pleasant and kind. Then she went from hating the male lead to being completely in love with him...in the space of , what, four days? Five, maybe? And then there's the Big Reveal that honestly was so painfully telegraphed that I kind of thought the heroine must be exceptionally stupid for not seeing it before. No, seriously, the reader knows what's up within two pages, most of the secondary characters practically tell her the Secret, and she takes the whole book to figure it out? Come on.
Overall, though, if you don't expect too much from your fairy tale rewrites, this book is worth the hour or two it will take you to breeze through it.

Sweet fairy tale romance...
By Laura
Very sweet and sassy retelling of a classic fairy tale.
I'm normally not a big fan of retooled tales, but when they're in the hands of a professional like Ms. Myles, you just know the twist is going to be good. In this instance, the princess not only sheds her self involved ennui, but she manages to reach above and beyond in the name of love, emerging from her cocoon and showing just how beautiful being your own hero can truly be. But this is also a love story, and while she does rescue the disguised king, he rescues her right back.
All in all a delightful retelling that Ms. Myles truly made her own.
