I'm not famous. Most of you have never heard of me. I'm just an
ordinary guy doing his best to make the most of the moments I
have. In that way, we probably have a lot in common, and Lessons
Learned is filled with stories of daily living, often humorous,
sometimes faced with tragedy, and others with personal stupidity--I
don't whitewash myself here. There's a reason friends and family call
me "the real life Clark Griswold," and you'll understand it by the end of
this book.
I like to be honest for lots of reasons, but mostly because I'm
human and my kids know it, so why hide the truth? Besides, they've
heard these stories a million times. I've told them because I want them
to learn from them and thought maybe you might, too. I cover a broad
spectrum of my fifty years here. If I leave anything out, it's probably to
protect my family because, while I signed up for this honest, raw reveal
of my life, my family and friends didn't. As you'll see, family and friends
are really important to me, so I'd like to keep them around and not
estrange them from me, if I can.
Who is Brian Scott Sherman, you may ask? Well, the short version
is that I am a husband, father, son, brother, friend, retired Air Force
veteran, and speaker from the Midwest (Suburb of Chicago). I've lived
in Illinois, Indiana, Montana, and Korea. I have spent quality time in
thirty-nine states and traveled most of the world. I have four great kids
and three wonderful grandchildren. I was married to two different, but
wonderful women. I believe in God, value fatherhood and family, and
service to country and community, love Blackhawks hockey and Da
Bears. I'm a bit of a daredevil some might say, certainly impulsive. But
that comes from the passion I have for life, living, and the people
around me.
I like having fun with every breath, you see, and I like to enjoy the
places and people I'm with. Sometimes, that can result in some hairy
situations. Other times, the hairy situations find me all on their own.
From surviving a head-first car crash into a utility post at seventy-five
miles per hour and wearing no seat belt, to traveling to my honeymoon
on a KC-135 Stratotanker that almost crashed, to almost having my head
blown off with a tracer bullet by my father-in-law, from bathroom
misadventures in the Caribbean to drinking antifreeze instead of Diet
Coke--I've had some crazy adventures. Some will be beyond the
ordinary for most. Others will hit close to home. But I've often been
asked to tell these tales and talk about what I learned from them, and
that's what this book is all about. After all, what's the point of going
through challenges if you come out the other side the same, having
learned nothing? Some people may try to live that way, I suppose, but
not me.
There've been lessons in every one of these stories for me, lessons
that have changed me and made me who I am today. And while, I may
not be perfect, I do feel I have a little bit of everything, like the Keith
Urban song says, and that's as close to perfect as I need.
So I hope you enjoy Lessons Learned, the stories of my life, and I
hope it inspires you to live each day as a student in the classroom of
life, learning from every challenge, every experience, and becoming a
better you. If my book inspires that in anyone, then it's all worth it.

About the Author
Brian’s stellar career in the United States Air Force spanned over twenty-three years culminating in the elite status of Senior Data Systems Analyst. His milestones include Class Speaker at the United States Air Force Leadership School where he also earned Distinguished Graduate. Brian also graduated in the top ten percent of his class while attending the United States Air Force Noncommissioned Officer Academy. His essay work has been recognized by Time, Newsweek, Life, U.S. News & World Report and Reader’s Digest magazines. He attended the Community College of the Air Force and Ball State University. Since his retirement from the USAF, he has been employed by Camber Corporation where he currently leads a highly specialized DOD computer network security team. Through his travels, Brian has gained a rare understanding of peoples and cultures around the world. Brian happily shares his life with his wife Tiffany and is a very proud father of four.

This book is good for the heart!

Full disclosure folks, I’m a friend of the author’s. However, with absolute honesty I tell you that I’ve never read a book that was more fun to read than Lessons Learned. I’ve never read a book that had me smiling and laughing out loud more than when I was reading Lessons Learned… and I’d heard many of the stories before!
When I first met Brian, he was interviewing me for a job. I wasn’t sure I was going to like him. He was different. And at first, I wasn’t yet sure it was in a good way. I soon learned that Brian’s honesty, fascination with every new person he meets, and passion for life were all 100% genuine. We quickly became great friends.
Brian is a storyteller. He loves to tell his stories to anyone who’ll listen, and everyone loves to listen. This book is a collection of his stories. My father had the occasion to meet Brian once. They liked each other so well that Dad actually went to Amazon.com and purchased a copy of Lessons Learned for himself… and Dad rarely reads books. Yesterday we were talking about it and Dad said, “Brian really makes a big deal out of the things in his life… and that’s a good thing!” And he added, “I never made a big deal out of the things in my life.” He gave a thoughtful look… “I should have!” That pretty much sums it up for me. I highly recommend this book as a truly enjoyable read that will lighten the heart, lift the spirits, put a smile on your face… not to mention the occasional belly laugh, and it just may inspire you to look at life in a way that makes you just a little bit happier!

Congratulations!

I absolutely enjoyed every chapter of your incredible journey called life! I literally read the entire book in less than 2 days! I could not put it down! I love your heart and how, just like myself, you truly cherish family, friends and coworkers. You only get one life to live. I love how you've made the absolute most out of the cards that were dealt to you. One of my very favorite quotes of all time is by Oscar Wilde, "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all." You are truly living and making a difference in lives. You are a light, Brian Sherman. Congratulations on an incredible read! Reading this book is like sitting down with the author and having a beer while he shares his extraordinary life story with you! This book will have you laughing, crying and even cringing a time or two. This is a really fun book to read, and lives up to its title!
