tales like The Fear Merchant

Wind Chill is a story of survival in the most horrific way. When a daughter can no longer trust her father she must find a way to save herself. But, what can one do when all is not what it seems; with a dawning horror she realizes that perhaps daddy has been looking out for her all along.
Sixteen-year-old Emma has lost her mother, slowly she has been watching her once loving father turn into a full-blown paranoid. Until one evening she is abruptly woken and told to grab her gear, they’re leaving. Next thing she knows; she’s waking from a drug-induced sleep in the depths of a snow-encrusted Wisconsin. Here she is ushered into a cabin by her father, where there’s food stockpiled, steel shutters on the windows, and an arsenal locked away upstairs. What the hell is going on?
Step by step Rutigliano walks us through a slow buildup of terror and when we finally think, “Aha, I know what’s going to happen,” it doesn’t!
As for the included short stories…well, these are wicked. Treading on the dark side, tales like The Fear Merchant, Little Red Vest, Shadowplay, Jump Cuts, and The Skin Trade test your imagination. One is led to the edge of madness with little room for a misstep.
The tone lightens just a tad with Bang, The Deconstructionist, and The Last Great Effect. Within these tales are a bit of quirkiness that can garner a smile at the cleverness of the telling.
All in all, this book makes for an entertaining read.

Among my many other vices, I’m always a sucker for extreme weather survival stories. Especially cold. Cold is fascinating. Nature at its most violent might be earthquakes or volcanoes or hurricanes. Cold, though, cold is different. So, you’d better believe I wasn’t going to pass up something with a freezing blue-white cover and a title like Wind Chill.
And when said aforementioned extreme weather survival story also involves monsters or some other sort of peril? Even better! A howling, bitter, deadly terror to go along with an already precarious situation!
For teenager Emma, going on a sudden trip with her dad is far less surprise vacation and far more emergency bug-out; Dad’s been getting weirder and weirder since Mom died. Paranoid. Buying into conspiracy stuff, end-of-days societal collapse. The guns, she knew about, if perhaps not the extent of the arsenal. The cabin-turned-bunker way out in the middle of the wintry wooded nowhere, she didn’t.
Only once they’re there does she realize how truly isolated the place is. No internet, no phones, no contact with the outside world at all, and even if she could sneak the car keys, they’re snowed in and she wouldn’t know where to drive. Not fun. It’d be a bad scene even if there wasn’t something evil in the woods.
It’s an intense read, with plenty of that claustrophobic no-way-out trapped sense, Emma’s anxiety both tangible and sympathetic. I wasn’t ready for it to end as soon as it did, but that was because the rest of the book consists of bonus short stories, eight of them in all.
They are no slouches either, touching on some classic monster lore, some dark-fairy-tale-feeling pieces, some weirdness defying categorization, and what may just perhaps be a slightly discernible hint of commentary on practical effects vs. CGI.

A Novella/Collection Worthy of Your Attention.

Patrick Rutigliano- “Wind Chill” (2016 from Crystal Lake Publishing)
Wind Chill is author Patrick Rutigliano’s first release with Crystal Lake Publishing. This is framed as a novella with some bonus short stories, but I found since the title novella is followed by an equal amount of short stories (about 100 pages of each) I’m going to review it as a collection.
Let’s start with the star of the show--
“Wind Chill”
The author pulls us in right off the bat and lays the path nicely with a ton of mystery and questions that have the reader needing to know what the hell is going on. A doomsday prepper type, the father, takes his daughter, Emma, to a secluded cabin in Wisconsin in the midst of winter. What Emma doesn’t understand is whether her father is completely crazy or if there is some sort of real danger to feared. When her dad disappears, Emma digs around the locked up cabin and discovers that he truly was protecting her. And now she must fend for herself against an impossible force of evil that lurks beyond the cabin walls.
My only issue was with the transition from dad’s disappearance into the Rambo-esque survival instincts and talents of Emma. If the story was a little longer, especially at that pivotal section, this may have been a total knock-out for Rutigliano.
Great writing skills present, terrific characters, and suspenseful enough for WIND CHILL to garner 4 Stars!
Now, onto the short stories.
“The Fear Merchant” – 4 Stars DiStephano applies his special effects mastery into the greatest haunted house on the block. The kids of the neighborhood will never be the same and neither will Roy Wallace.
“BANG!” – 4 Stars A fun little game of Russian Roulette between monsters to decide who gets tonight’s victim. This one was fun.
“Little Red Vest” – 2 Stars I didn’t care for this one.
“Shadowplay” - 3 Stars This one was okay for me.
“Jump Cuts” - 2 Stars Another one I didn’t care for.
“The Skin Trade” – 3 Stars This one had some likeable parts. I think had it been longer and if some of the questions raised within had been answered, this one had potential to be special.
“The Deconstructionist” – 4 Stars Short and sweet. Read this one!
“The Last Great Effect” – 5 Stars I’d be willing to bet the author is a movie effects fan or maybe actually has some education in the field. I’m not talking CGI bulls***, but the real deal, hand-made, remote controlled type of classic special effects. See the Howling or American Werewolf in London for two if the greatest special effect monster transformations ever! When special effects master, Reggie, take his own life, he leaves behind a note for his best friend, Clyde. Together with the help of another of their colleagues in the field, Manny, Clyde sets out to make Reggie’s funeral one for the ages. Do not miss this one!
Over all, I give this collection 4 stars!
