The best book I've read on this subject- authoritative, warmly written, with information that will be new and helpful for women
By N. Ferguson R.
This is the most helpful, personal, and readable book on the subject I have run across. It isn't overly long, coldly clinical, excessively technical or jargon-filled, hopeless, or falsely hopeful. Instead, it provides information about factors which influence your fertility at various stages of life. Information is easily accessible and warmly, compassionately, and non-judgmentally conveyed by a unique team- a fertility patient and the director of a fertility clinic/fertility doctor who is authoritative, fully on top of evidence-based practices, and also wise/offering common sense help with behavioral decisions when evidence is conflicting or inconclusive.

Each section of the book includes information about positive actions, both large and very small, that can improve fertility as well as large and small choices that can negatively impact fertility. Among the most helpful sections of this book are the chapters on lifestyle differences and fertility, medications and health conditions which impact fertility, everyday products that may impact fertility, foods and beverage choices and fertility, and weight/exercise/BMI and fertility. The final 45 pages guide readers through issues of infertility- going to a fertility clinic, guys and infertility, treatments and recent developments in the field.

This is the honest, caring, and thoughtfully designed guide that I think women need. It addresses ways that people who choose to delay having children can make choices years in advance to help preserve and support fertility until the right time comes, and it provides the answers that those who feel they may have delayed too long need. The afterward, entitled "Developing a Fertility Mindset", really summarizes the mission of this book. For women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, the authors offer ways to develop an ongoing awareness of how daily choices impact fertility, in order to give yourself the best chance to conceive.

Highly recommended.

This Will Overhwhelm Most Women - A Long Term Lifestyle Recommendation That Most Will Refuse To Do
By ChristineMM
In a nutshell the authors advocate for a first pregnancy to be late in the 30s or around 40 years of age. The fact that women are less fertile by then is stated and the advice is to change your lifestyle for all the days leading up to that age. Unrealistic recommendations are given and expected to be done every day, yes I said every day up to when you decide you want to get pregnant. I was already aware of various issues such as avoiding BPA (which we now are told is in almost all canned foods and aeseptic packaging such as milks, soups, chicken broth, etc.), never using a household cleanser that has a fragrance, not having a Brazilian blowout or other chemical processes on the hair, eating a perfect diet of whole foods, etc. are things that Americans struggle to do when it is medically necessary such as after surviving Cancer or finding out they have diabetes or heart disease. And the authors expect women to do these things from their teen years just to ensure that when they decide they want a baby that they can have that baby.

The book begins with a basic sex ed explanation which is fine but was pretty elementary to me. Sexualy transmitted diseases and their role in making a woman infertile are discussed. With the increase in premarital sex STDs are more prevalent today but the authors do not judge. I was disappointed in only one page about hormones discussing estrogen dominance and estrogen and progresterone being out of balance can cause problems. The absence of discussion about past use of birth control pills being a disruptor of ideal hormonal function even after discontinuing The Pill is not mentioned although it was a major finding I read in the mainstream media about five years ago.

I was surprised there was not enough talk about timing of intercourse in relation to the monthly cycle. The things I learned in a book publishe din the 1990s called GETTING PREGNANT were key in my conception of my first baby and I passed my book to infertile women I knew which resulted in natural conception of fourteen babies. Those women were not counseled on proper timing of intercourse with the cycle and after one to three months using the new timing they were all pregnant.

Although high risk pregnancy was mentioned with pregnancy in the 30s (35 is "advanced maternal age") they did not discuss birth defect risk. I guess now that amniocentesis is routine and more women choose elective abortion (termination of pregnancy) they did not want to talk about it. You see in that example that their advice filters out the true risks of a pregnancy at about age 40.

Infertility treatments and procedues are explained in detail and how to harvest eggs for future use is all explained.

I rate this book 3 stars = it's okay because after working with women in my volunteer work and in talking to friends, co-workers, and acquaintances about health, wellness, pregnancy, childbirth, and infertility, I think the recommendations here are too overwhelming for 95% of American women to actually do. I would wager that even women declared infertile would find it impossible to do all the lifestyle changes listed here for six months or one year let alone for all healthy teen women to decide to do all these things until they are ready to bear children whether that is at age 30 or 40.

Having read about wellness, having dealt with food intolerance, estrogen dominance, food sensitivities and more I do not argue that the recommendations in this book for lifestyle choices are wrong. They are up to date and the latest in wellness recommendations but still so few people can do all of this strictly. The authors do not mention balance or at what percentage to adhere to this, it's portrayed as all or nothing. It's unrealistic. Also these wellness things would not be supported by mainstream OB/GYNs who are the main health care providers for 99% of women.

A decent compendium of preconception and fertility advice
By Epilady
The Whole Life Fertility Plan covers three main themes: pre-conception best practices, most common causes of fertility related issues, and assisted reproductive techniques. There is a growing body of evidence that shows that some women can benefit by doing certain things before pregnancy (taking prenatals, stopping smoking, not doing drugs, etc) and Kyra covers that. It's not a ton of novel information for women who have struggled with fertility for a while, but it is a decent compendium of information and is factually correct, which is not true of all the internet searches that people may do.

Because reproductive science is still a growing science, there is a potential that this book could quickly become outdated. It's also very slanted towards American assistive reproductive techniques, while other countries have more success with less risk to mothers. It's worth doing some additional searches about best practices from the European Union and talking with a doctor about them. For example, Zinc and CoQ10 is used as supplement taken by men with sperm issues and women with poor egg quality and increasing evidence shows an impact. Some EU facilities see improved results when the nutrients are used in the media for in vitro - but not all US facilities implement the same procedure.

Overall, it's a good place to start for women who are interested in fertility.
