Interesting and Engaging

Through the challenges of career changes, romantic relationships, daughter- and motherhood, Mandlin does her best. She is sometimes quite impressive, other times merely human. But all of it she records with an authenticity that allows the reader to relate to her particular experience. Mandlin's memoir of a woman learning to be true to herself reminds us that sorrow and loss are inevitable, but resilience is sometimes a choice.

Exploring the Real with Flow and Zest

This book contains love, depicts the impact of death and shows a constellation of apartments—mostly on the upper West Side of Manhattan. But the word in the title that I would most emphasize is real. The author’s tone is clarion clear and the narrative events stay joined to the emotion and immediacy of an adventurous and passionate perspective. Through the trials of her parents’ divorce, her father’s out-of-control gambling, her sister’s urgent pleas for help and her son’s steadfast development towards maturity—the book rings with truthfulness. Once upon a time a friend was talking about the greatness of Beethoven and she said, “The musical solutions that he came up with were inventive, on the one hand; but they persuade you, emotionally, with their inevitability—the feeling that they could not have been resolved other than as he crafted them.” That is how I feel about Helen Mandlin’s narrative—she lets you in on the rock-solid inevitability of her life’s truth and, by extension, shows us one way in which we can make sense of a life fully lived with flow and zest.

Ben the Ghost continues.

I love the whole "A Shade of Vampire" series. If you are ready to start a new series, this is the one to start!
No sex scenes, which is fine. The writing is wonderfully done. Tons of adventure!! I love readiing about Ben's adventures as a ghost. The story line jumps from Ben to Aisha, the jinni and her plight with the wierd creatures on Julie's boat. You also see what's going on with Julie after betraying Ben. The storyline jumps again to Ben's family in the Shade. How they are dealing with the aftermath of Jeramiah's attack. Then back to Ben. He's trying to help River who was captured by Hunters and taken to a remote place of captivity. Ben has to try and save her before they kill her or do wierd experiments on her because she's the first half-human/ half-vampire they've ever seen or captured. How will Ben save her when he's only a ghost?
Excellent storytelling!!! Must read!!!

Connector book

I have to agree with the other 4 Star reviews on this one. I love the series, and all of Bella's books today. But this book in particular felt like just a "connector" and where I don't mind the short books Bella puts out and have praised them to date for reading like a TV series (which I still would love to see these books become), this book in particular was that episode that just left you unsatisfied. 1 lackluster book out of 22 ain't bad though....just bring on book 23 to be strong for us!!

Can't put down!!

I am completely addicted to these books. I wish they would just keep going because I think I could read about the Shade and all of the characters for the rest of my life and be content!

This is an amazing series and the characters and the writing are perfect! There is never a dull moment! Once you start reading you just can't put it down and you yearn for more!

This is book two of the series and is excellent. Great progression by the author.

I will not ruin the story by trying to summarize it. Rather, I will note two or three aspects that differ from the first book.

First, the characters in this novel are much richer and progress much more than in the first novel.

The characters have diverse personalities and their individual responses varied as required per situation. Sometimes I disagreed with their choices.

The author did such a superior job in character creation that I was vested in their conduct. I hated when they did dumb things, wanted to yell at them, I fist pumped when something great happened. Kudos to JL Clark for making the reader care about the subjects as much as the plot.

Second, the scenery and animals were rich and well developed. The Allesi in particular. I know my kids will want one. The realms are clear and easy to understand. The worlds and tasks were well thought out and not standard fantasy fare. A nice departure from most pieces in the genre.

Finally, the twists. Did I see them coming? Yes, no, not really, I don't know. Readers will be delighted to find that what they expect isn't the case, but maybe it is, but are you sure? We are left thinking about things well after story is over. Insightful job by the author in keeping everything fresh, tight and new. Even at the end there is magic that you didn't expect.

Overall, fantastic read that proves that sequels can be better than the original.

While she and those with her are not comfortable with it

I couldn't wait to read this book. Sophia and her friends are still at the school but her presence has been demanded by the Counsel of Elders for a quering. While she and those with her are not comfortable with it, they go to Avalon. There she finds there are a lot of things she doesn't know about her faeid life and those of her friends and family. Her life is in danger from a number of sources and her heart even more so. She now must find all the pieces of the Lailan Crown to save her people, but the Dark Ones are after it too.
This book was exactly what I wanted it to be. There was love, anger, fear, romance, friendship, loyalty, betrayal, and more. Sophia feels isolated and like she is having to do everything by herself, and I think that was part of the test. There were times I wanted to hug her and times I wanted to smack her (Michael too for that matter)! I still love the world that the author created and want to visit again really soon to see how it all ends.
This was a 5/5 for me. I cannot wait to see what happens next to Sophia and her friends.

I love this series!

Another great book by JL Clark. She paints such vivid pictures of an amazing fantasy world that I was always reluctant to leave when I had to put the book down. I love all the tiny details from the unique character names to the fun use of the magical language. Sophia is every bit the typical teenage girl with all the self doubt, boy craziness, and moodiness, but at the same time she is starting to see how really fabulous she is and that she can overcome anything she sets out to accomplish. I can't wait for the next book.

Candid, touching and heartwarming

A touching, heart warming, remarkably frank (and sometimes heartbreaking) but also inspirational life and love story.
Cynda takes you through her journey with candor and humour and you find yourself immersed in her and Michael's immediately.
You truly feel her struggle, her challenge, and her love throughout. Once you put it down you will realize that love conquers even in death.
Cynda also shows us that when memories are made with ones we love their memory becomes our treasure ... and for that we are rich.

Being a lover of words, I have read many books that evoke feelings, empathy, compassion, and resonance, via its narrative. But a story told through retelling, by recreating words, emotions, and imageries, cannot capture the true, raw and powerful sentiments that the original dialogues, notes, and prose, that were once the actual words of the people in the story. By documenting their love story as a series of original emails, letters, notes and pictures, Cynda and Michael are allowing you an unvarnished view into their love story and letting their own literal words that they have said to each other, be the vehicle for you to decipher just how unique and unselfish this love story is. This "unedited" way of writing is unique and powerful, because it allows the reader to determine, and feel for themselves just how powerful this love story is, without being told to feel one way or another. It is almost as if Cynda knew that the original words were enough to evoke in her reader the power of their love for one another and how her grief was overcome by hope and a sense of continuity. Thank you Cynda and Michael for allowing us into your immensely personal lives and making us feel hopeful, enamored, and thankful for what is in our lives.

I read this book in one sitting. It was liking finding someone's diary and knowing that I shouldn't be reading it but unable to stop myself. Cynda is one of my dearest friends. She went missing from my life after meeting Michael and this tribute to him has finally told me how the story unfolded. The book is very emotional which sometimes gets away from her but it is clear from the outset that this was a special meeting of two souls who each needed what the other had to give. There are few people in our lives like Cynda who has boundless optimism and a genuine love of life. Her ability to stay with someone and see him to the end of his life with no fear for her own survival only testifies to her capacity for caring and that I am beyond lucky to have a friend like her in my life. I very much doubt I could have done what she did for Michael but it was a two way street and what she gained from the experience is clearly told on every page. Its a jaw dropping tale of love without boundaries. A whole box of kleenex is required.

Fantasy meets action comedy!

The Grand Adventures of Jeff and Dan makes good upon the promise of the title. The duo, along with the friends they meet upon the way engage in adventure after adventure, culminating in an epic final battle. The humor is laughout loud funny and the characters feel real and genuine.

One last Enchantment from the original Royal Historian

This is Baum's last contribution to the wonderful series of Oz books. Having had this book for many a year it is good to see it back in hardcover. True there is the Del Ray paperback, but this one is the edition to get your children. Baum's books are still wonderful and magical today. His writing has a wonderful warmth and originality to it that one doesn't get very often. Even if your children only know of the film it's ok to get this for them. Dorothy and Glinda as well as all the other favorites from the MGM film are here with the new creations of Baum. Don't think this book is dull...far from it. Baum has written a very tightly plotted story with plenty of adventure. With all the original color plates and B/W illustrations from John R.Neil it makes a handsome edition to add to your collection.

The last and one of the best

The last by the original author of the series, this shows how peacekeeping ambassadors (Ozma and Dorothy) can become involved in a dispute and detained, their mission pushed aside by evil dictators. The Su-Dic and Queen Coo-eh-oh are vain, evil adversaries, causing a "war" between two of Ozma's populations. When Ozma and Dorothy try to reason with both parties they are rejected by one group, and taken prisoner by the other. Glinda and an entourage from the Emerald City must rescue the group, aided by three enchanted fish, who must first endure the odd cabin of Reera the Red, the Yookoohoo.

A great end to the original series, and these facsimile editions were long missing from juvenile libraries. Two generations missed the original Oz series when it was out of print for 25 years.

Baum's final "Oz" book

Some time ago, I decided I would collect and read all 14 of the "Oz" books by L. Frank Baum. It took me a few years to find them all, but I finally finished my little project with "Glinda of Oz," Baum's final outing. Not one of the best books in the series but not one of the worst, either, "Glinda" falls somewhere in the middle. While visiting the good witch Glinda, Ozma and Dorothy learn of two factions living in a remote corner of Oz that are planning to go to war. Wanting to prevent such discord in her paradise, Ozma and Dorothy travel to this land to prevent the Skeezers and Flatheads from coming to blows, but wind up becoming prisoners in an island beneath a lake.
The biggest problem I have with this book, as with many of the "Oz" books, is that just because the title has a character's name in it doesn't mean he or she is the star. While this is one of Glinda's bigger roles, it's not really her book but more of an ensemble piece. Baum, as if he knew this would be his last outing, crams nearly every character he'd created into the rescue party that sets out to free Ozma and Dorothy (but no Hungry Tiger, sadly), and most of the characters featured in that rescue don't have much to do but stand around befuddled.
The story has a fair amount of magic and introduces a few new characters, but no particularly memorable ones. Though there's nothing really bad about it, the book is noteworthy mainly because it's Baum's last before he died and Ruth Thompson took over the series.
Wow. All this time and I've finally finished reading Baum's "Oz" books. Heh. Time to start looking for the ones written by everyone else...

Haunting book--review contains spoilers!

It's taken me a while to write this review, because this is a book that really stays with you and you process it for such a long time after reading it.

The thing is, while being an interesting story, purely fictional and fun, it kept striking me as very analogous to real life. The author does not just give away much as to what is happening inside the character's head. So many books give you all the answers to the characters emotions so that you don't have to figure out what they are based on their actions and speech. I kept wondering why the main girl character stayed in an obviously dangerous, odd situation without really seeking to get out of it, and even ultimately found it feeling like her new normal.
We have all known or heard of people like this. In this book, we just sort of get to see how it can happen. As we find out more about the main character's former life, the answers become clear, even though they haven't just been handed to us through some inner monologue.

What I really loved was the contrast of dark and light, murky and clear. When Finn shows up, all of the murky suddenly seems obvious, as both his personality, as well as the truth he brings, sheds light on all of it. He was such a contrast, and I found myself drawn to him almost because of all the murky darkness that came before him.

Anyways, super interesting and well-written book. You will enjoy it!

Intrigue, mystery, and beauty... Fantastic sophomore effort!

Full disclosure: the author is a friend, so I might be bias. But in all honesty, this sophomore effort was excellently executed! Friendship aside, the author has grown immensely since her first effort (Mila, A Three Part Story), and I enjoyed the first one. I haven't read a book like this one in quite a while and found it enjoyable and oh so intriguing. McReynolds has achieved a heightened ability to build a world and describe the thoughts and actions of her characters.
Unlike my review for her other book, I'll refrain from spoilers... But I do need to say that she has obtained a poeticism which invigorates. Be prepared for all the good stuff: intrigue, mystery, beauty, intensity, tension...etc. A very well-done work which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good story, a relatable protagonist, questions of right and wrong, mystery, and a darkened and ominous scenery full of beauty. Excited for the next book!

This is a different sort of book than I usually read, but I believe it's made me a new fan of the genre. As always with this author, the story is simply fantastic. She really makes you feel like you're there experiencing things through the main character. There were some hard truths in this book, some that seem so difficult to face not only for the main character, but for the reader as well. Loved the backdrop of the cabin, such a rich setting. Overall I'd consider this book a MUST read. My hat is off to the author, I simply cannot wait to she what she does next!

Sometimes in a relationship, we find ourselves in dire situations and we get really confused about what to do. Whatever decision we are able to make at that point could go two ways. It has a 50/50 chance of turning out good, hereby making everyone happy, or turning out extremely wrong, making situations worse or in some cases, even ruin the chance of making up.
This book contain a lot of practical things we can do in a relationship from time to time to avoid getting into these problems in the first place. It was a good read. I sent it to my partner after reading it, just to make sure she also puts in more effort

This was a really interesting book to read. A lot of information were written for us readers to know what it is like in that situation and how to fix it. Relationships can be really tacky sometimes and it happens normally. No perfect relationships exist. God intended us to be challenged in what comes to our relationship and how we could conquer it to see if we really love each other. This can only make the relationship better not destroy it. We must fully understand how important it is to have intimate communication on how it helps relationships effectively. Definitely commendable because it's worth the purchase.

Good book, some unanswered questions

I have read all of the books in the series and this one did a nice job of continuing the story. There were loose AND dead ends, though. No spoilers here, but suffice it to say that when a character decides that there is no need to pursue more answers, the riddles remain unresolved for everyone, including the reader! Maybe the loose ends will get tied up in a bow with the next, and final installment.

From the Childseller to Spinning Under the Stars...

Don't read The Dragonslayer's Sword by Resa Nelson if you like your heroines as limp as Sleeping Beauty, as clueless as Snow White, and as suspect as Cinderella.

This reader has longed to see heroines who break from the traditional archetype of the beauteous victim valuable simply because of her looks and her faultless character. What about the scarred heroines, those living under the yoke of self-doubt, and those who have often been the unwanted?

Read this only if you want to read about female heroes who chose to live on through betrayal, abandonment, and even being disfigured.

Read on if you want a female blacksmith for a hero. Read on if you want to take the journey with Astrid to stand up inside her own skin. Read on if you want your dragons to have happy endings. Read on because you want to witness the power of belief to mold and shape Astrid into something as effective as welded iron. Read on because you want to read about the kind of love that survives even death and the kind of fear and hate that makes men even worse than dragons.

Read on because the last time you read about a woman who conversed with dragons it was in Ursula LeGuinn's Tehanu and you wanted another immersive experience like that.

Read on...only...if you dare and let the dragons stand with you whatever you choose.

A Great Fantasy Adventure!

I have spent the past couple months working my way through this series. After having read her newest story for the companion series Dragonfly, I needed to know more about the characters I was being introduced to. The Dragonslayer Series, is the story of Astrid, a common blacksmith, who in the end is anything but common. Each book continues her journey and each one contains an element she must overcome to gain knowledge about herself and about the world she is destined to protect.

I find it sometimes hard to critique one book in a series when they are heavily connected — where the sequels are just a continuation of the story. Therefore, instead of talking about each one individually, I prefer to look at the series as a whole.

There are four books in the series: The Dragonslayer’s Sword, The Iron Maiden, The Stone of Darkness, and The Dragon’s Egg.

Once again Nelson had me hooked within the first couple chapters. Every element a good story should have Nelson included. I never felt anything was missing. Plot holes I was afraid would never be answered, were tidied up at the end. A clean, well-written, dragon-ish and magical adventure that I believe most fantasy buffs will enjoy. Nelson is a good storyteller and I feel a part of the world she created. A place where dragons are not always dragons, and what is a dragon exactly? A place where the bad guys aren’t always as awful as one first thought and like all of us have many complicated layers. The protagonist is a likeable character, she has suffered much in her life, and is always just looking to belong. But where does she belong is the ultimate question. I cannot recommend this series enough.

I saw a review about Nelson being a simple writer. I am not sure why that is supposed to be a bad thing? I personally read for enjoyment and appreciate an author who cares more about telling a good story than about sounding erudite. I enjoyed her writing and ease of her flowing words. She also had some great quotes that touched a cord in me.

If you are a fantasy lover like me, than I’m sure you will enjoy this story. A collection of cultures much like our own in history, Nelson breathes life and imagination into the creatures and civilizations we have only read about. A beautiful story that will appeal to many and to all ages.

A new take on a deep-felt myth

This is really really something quite different. If you're looking for clichés, they won't come from Resa Nelson. She has taken the myth of the Dragonslayer and made it into something very new and enticing.

I have to admit I was taken aback when the heroine first started doing things -- magical things -- that you usually don't see in heroic fantasy. It jarred me out of traditional fantasy reading mold and into a much more active mindset. Nelson's Astrid is a proactive heroine -- but not just because she picks up a sword and waves it around. We've seen that going on for years in woman-oriented fantasy. Astrid acts and reacts in a parable-like realm that is something entirely new in the world of fantasy. Think of one of the short, dreamlike tales of the brilliant Cat Valente (The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden), expanded to examine all the psychic implications of the magical things that happen.

I wonder what would have happened a story like this had been submitted to the late great (and wonderfully opinionated) Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword and Sorceress (Set of Sword And Sorceress Anthologies by Marion Zimmer Bradley) series. Would Bradley have loved it or hated it? So much of what Nelson does breaks the mold.

If you hanker for stories that touch some deep archetype within (as in Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces (Bollingen Series)), this is a book that will satisfy this desire.

Another comparison is that Nelson's plots and themes have the direct, heart-to-heart appeal of an M. Night Shyamalan script (see The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale and Lost).

At the same time, Nelson's humor and insight into human needs and emotional development leave you with a feeling of warm human fulfillment. And it's got action and romance galore. It's a doggone good story, and if it means something to you the reader in terms of how the hero changes and grows, that's paydirt.

I'll be very curious as to the attitude of such review zines as Locus. Will they be open to how Nelson overlays her icon-shattering vision on the mythos of dragonslayers? I hope so. The book is well worth it.
