Scales: A Fresh Telling of Beauty and the Beast, by Alydia Rackham

Princess Eleanora is very different from her younger sister, Oralia. While Oralia is golden-haired, sprightly and adored by all the men of the kingdom, Eleanora is ebony-haired and dark-eyed, and even-keeled. Wandering musician Amber of the Lute glimpses that difference right away—and his laughter and color bring out a sparkle in Eleanora. But this arouses vicious jealousy in Oralia, who acquires and casts a terrible spell on her sister—one that twists both the body and the mind. A spell that can only be broken by one who can see into Eleanora's heart, and love her enough to set her free. Excerpt from Chapter Nine: "All the way across the roof, near the foot of the opposite tower, stood a person. Full in the waning white moonlight. Her face tilted toward the shrouded sky. The light shimmered against her smooth, fine scales, making them look like liquid silver, and it softened the slender curves of her body. The fans near her face had calmed, and rested against the sides of her neck. Her large eyes reflected a luminous shine as she gazed, unblinking, at the moon. Watching it withdraw behind the clouds. The black shadow of the tower fell across her long, sweeping tail. Thus, from where Amber stood, he could have mistaken her for a pale young woman dressed in blues and whites. Except for the bearing of her features. Her gaze—vacant. Barren as a waterless sea. Her mouth—incapable of speech, of smiling or frowning. Her expression blank, and immovable. She stared, without pondering. No thought lived behind those eyes, or flickered at the corners of those lips. A silver serpent. Still and silent as ice. Inhuman as stone." Reader Review from Patreon: "The subtlety here is wonderful - nothing seems overdone and like any good fairytale, the familiar elements allow us to take a shortcut to the core of the story. We're all familiar with jealous suitors and jealous siblings and handsome men with flashing blue eyes, but from poor Ailse to Amber (who listens better than he claims to), you can feel a sort of presence underneath their actions... something that is thinking very fast to reconcile the past and the future and move the people around them to the right places. Of course Oralia is the shining example here, pushing off her suitors on her sister when she doesn't want them and picking them up again when she needs to make someone jealous, but what is she really after? She surely knows the obstacles to marrying a minstrel, and she of all people seems likely to go after power, not talent. Sir Roderick thinks he knows how to drive Amber away from Oralia and have her to himself, but does he understand how Oralia works at all? And then there's Ele, and somehow by being her quiet, reserved self she manages to have a good old time in her simple dress with her enchanting minstrel friend. I was expecting her to be at the center of some sort of disaster at the feast, but she knows herself and her sister too well for that. I'm also impressed by her mother's choice to let her have her independence and not force her to play to her sister's whims. This whole cast looks to be a shade quicker on the uptake than your average fantasy court - another thing I always liked about the old fairytales. I can't wait to meet the witches and see these clever people put to the test!" -Melissa

Delightful, clean read, a brand new tale in a classic package
By Kungfu Jedi
Once again, Rackham brings forth a lovely tale of love, adventure, and redemption, wrapped in a familiar package with more than a few fabulous new twists! Nested in the mountains far past the foreboding Thornbind woods lies the kingdom of Tirincashil where a jealous princess casts a terrible changing spell on her elder sister after her coronation.
Everything beloved of the original fairytale of Beauty and the Beast Rackham fleshes out and enlivens, infusing life and color into the well-worn tale to bring a new round of characters into the mix. What I love so much is that nothing feels "replaced" or changed so much as just "different". This is a classic story, yet a new, thrilling adventure, with brand new characters who carry the story along very well on their own.
Amberian, a traveling minstel, takes the place of Belle, and his humble, compassionate nature, a love and talent for music, and a fondness for gardening ground him and endear him to the reader very quickly. His innocence and wit, and attraction to depth of character also endear him to the Princess Eleanora, whose own careful demeanor and razor intellect hide a charming beauty.
One fundamental key element of this tale is that the spell is not cast as punishment for any negative act, as in the original story- rather, the spell is garnered and cast out of pure spite, and Princess Ele seems to have done nothing to deserve the hideous transformation- and to forget who she is, or where she comes from. Utterly alone, with no hope, until Amber begins to wake the mind from within a beast, with nothing more than diligent kindness. In life, wicked times and evil happenings most often come when we don't really do anything to warrant, or deserve them. Life isn't fair. But, like Oralia, the spell comes as a punishment upon her, even though she seems to gain from it at first. Everything evil that happens to the characters as a result of one person's decisions ultimately happens to bring about their own destruction.
This was as key part to the tale as was the beauty of watching how such a spell was lifted. In our own lives, we forget the goodness and kindness that have been done to us, when hard times come and we lose hope, in ourselves, and in the goodness of others. And often, all it takes to lift us up out of the mind is a kind act by another, and it could probably be said that they did not have to do it. There is nothing to keep Amber at the castle alone- no hand forces him to stay and nurse the dragon back to health, no hand forces him to tend the garden, and plant seeds that will last far beyond the roses growing. And even though that had is slapped away more than once, he never stops reaching, never stops struggling, never stops journeying toward what he knows is right, and it is this perseverance that waters these seeds of kindness that he plants at the very beginning.
As you read this lovely tale, enjoy the journey- Rackham's skill of creating an inhabitable world at light speed in the mind of the reader is near unparalleled- I've not read a fiction author yet to be compared. Amber, Elenora, Oralia, Roderick, and the others spring to life and create the world even as you journey on- and the seeds that each one plants grows throughout the story into a winding vine that will either bear fruit- or choke the life out of them.
How do you plant the seeds of love? Even when it seems impossible, Rackham finds a way- and plants the seeds of an adventure for you in the meantime.

"Scales" is a delightful clean read for all ages, and is a wonderful refreshing tale for those looking for a new story in a classic package. Come along! You won't regret it.

Take the leap and you'll find yourself with a new favorite author
By Christy Stephenson
One of the things that is consistent about Alydia Rackham's works is the ease with which one can enter her story and become instantly immersed. In many works of fiction with unfamiliar settings, the reader must battle to both understand and stay interested enough to continue the journey. None of that dryness here. Whether new characters or familiar ones written into a new tale, you won't have to wonder whether to invest your time with Ms. Rackham.

This is true about Scales as well! The classic narrative of beauty in the eye of the beholder has literally put on a whole new face, while remaining true to the idea of the purity of love and the defeat of evil by goodness. Vivid characters, dark plots, innocence, compassion, whimsy and adventure will keep you pinned to the page and missing Eleanora's world even before the last sentence is read.
