Christmas Eve magic

This is on my Kindle, which is one of the black-and-white-only ones, so I miss the color, but the story gets through, and the illustrations are good, even so.

My reason for purchasing it was that, when it came time for the Christmas Eve tradition of a grandchild's reading "A Visit from St. Nicholas," we discovered that the grands had not remembered to bring the book that I gave them years ago. We had to improvise. I visited the Kindle Store and purchased the least expensive version that I could find. The Gothic script wasn't easy for my grandchildren to read, especially in the low light of the Christmas Eve living room (firelight, candles, Christmas tree lights, just a couple of lamps), but they managed, so our tradition survives.

Odd presentation

I would give this book only three stars because the poem is given first, and the illustrations follow, leaving you to guess which goes with what in the poem. At least they are in order, and it is not difficult to mentally put the correct verse with the right picture. The illustrations are charming. And Santa is dressed in black. I surmise that the illustrations were done in an age prior to the convention of his being dressed in red.
Unfortunately, the star feature couldn't be corrected, so it appears to get 5 stars, which is not the case.

A wonderful guide to active fatherhood and your much need participation in your daughter's life

As the father of three daughters (and three sons), I had a strong reaction to this book. It is terrific in the way it guides and urges fathers to be active and involved in the lives of their daughters. It doesn't provide a list of detailed actions you must take to have a successful relationship or a healthy child. Instead, it provides ten needs that can best be met by you as her father as she grows into a wonderful woman and makes her own way in the world.

When a father realizes the way her relationship with him and his with her defines so much of how she will define the male-female world in her life, it gives one pause. Daughters need heroes; she learns a lot about love from her father, she can learn important qualities such as humility, faith in God, and standing up for herself. How a father protects and defends her has a big impact on her self-image. The way a father demonstrates practicality and tenacity can provide a great example when hard times inevitably come. And he should be the kind of man he would like his daughter to marry.

Above all, he needs to help her get connected and stay connected with life. Never let her drift into a shell and withdraw from the world. This can't be done by command. It is a participatory experience that requires the father as much as the mother.

This is a fine book with lots of good anecdotes and examples. A great read for anyone still raising daughters and a terrific gift (if given the right way) to a new father of a little girl.

Even if you are already a great Daddy...

The more you know; the more you know you don't know.

This is a powerful book for fathers who are already great Dads... It will validate who you are and encourage you to keep doing what you are doing. It will help forge your mind around your absolute responsibilities as the father of a girl and young lady. It will remind you that baby girls, young ladies, and women have only ONE Daddy.

I have read other father/daughter books, including Dr. Leman's book (which I also recommend in another Amazon review). Like all advice, one must temper the input from outside sources. Dr. Leman and Dr. Meeker's books, however, are treasures that you can simply gorge yourself on... without regard to having to sift the psychobabble and tenuous opinions with little research and/or validity.

Dr. Meeker's book, in particular, is superlative from the standpoint of a no-holds barred, in-your-face reality check of the awesome responsibilities associated with being your daughter's Daddy. Whereas Dr. Leman's book was more of a semi-autobiographical and quasi-emotional journey of the Daddy-daughter relationship, Dr. Meeker's book is much more robust, profound, and, in some case, quantitatively advanced.

Best of all, though, Dr. Meeker is a daughter; a former girl; a woman; and a doctor. She has lived the life of a Daddy's girl (not the spoiled type - but, rather, the type who can look back upon her youthful Daddy interactions with fond appreciation). She has also lived the life of a doctor who has talked with, counseled, and commiserated with many, many girls and young ladies... THIS is an insight worth a King's ransom.

This book is very, very special. If you want to understand the touchy-feely side of how a Daddy affects his daughter's life, buy Dr. Leman's book. If you want to cover the full gamut of your superlative responsibility as a Daddy; if you want to delve deep into your daughter's eyes and see what she sees, wants, and needs... buy THIS book.

By the way, I HIGHLY recommend giving this book to both genders, as well as any other adult male who has daughters.

Good book to add to your arsenal - some facts, some opinions.

I have a three-year-old daughter and thought this would be a good Doctor's guide about raising a daughter. I found it to be interesting and Dr. Meeker makes some geniune points about the psychological make-up of young women and girls (although she is Family M.D. and not a Psychiatrist or Psychologist).

Some of the end tends to get a little preachy about God and the like, which you see coming over the horizon about midway through the book. Nevertheless, if there's one thing we know about people who are religious and those who are not, it's unlikely that a child-rearing book is going to convert you one way or the other; so, if you don't agree, that section won't kill you. I'm living proof.

In my opinion, this is an enjoyable book with some very relatable anecdotes and a lot of food for thought about the oversexualized nature of pop culture and the dangers facing our daughters every day.

As a father who tends to see things left of center in most cases, when it comes to youth (especially our daughters), I couldn't agree more.

A real gem. Julia, daughter in a Cavalier family, is charged to keep the only remaining Elizabethan gown and the family estate safe in Puritan England. This becomes especially difficult when the home is officially owned by a Roundhead fanatic. Julia is in love with the family friend, Christopher Wren, whose career grows from astronomer to architect. Laker presents the lifestyles of the rich and the lower class in detail. The entertaining plot unfolds realistically and logically, but with surprises, too. The reading level is not difficult; new vocabulary can be defined in context. There are relatively few characters, so readers come to know them well. The novel continues through the Restoration, the plague, and the great fire. The epilogue occurs 60 years later and ties up loose ends as Julia visits Wren's tomb at St. Paul's and then charges a daughter of the future to keep the circle unbroken, the present learning from the past through a beautiful gown of pearls. --Claudia Moore, W. A wonderful and informatvie Restoration-era romance

This was my second book by Rosalind Laker and I liked it almost as much as the first, "To Dance With Kings". Historically, this novel is extremely accurate and vividly described. You can feel the atmosphere and clearly imagine how everything was at that time. My problem with this novel is the same as in "To Dance With Kings" -- Ms. Laker changes her pace in the last third of the novel and hurries through events and characters to reach a happy ending. In "Circle of Pearls", Ms. Laker takes her time to describe the Cromwell years and the state of Sotherleigh during the time Makepeace Walker lived there. But after he leaves, she manages to draw everything to a close, including Charles II's restoration and coronation, the plague and the fire of London, in half the space she allotted to the preceding events. Her characters suffer as a result. Although Christopher and Julia continue to be well-realized, Adam is only briefly sketched. Sophie is not given room to show what she is about but the author just tells us what state she is in and how other characters perceive her. There is no mention of what happened to Patience. Certain characters, such as Nell, abrutly exit until a hint of what happened to them appears in the epilogue. Other characters, such as Katy, are added only with a purpose to enhance certain people's personality. I would have also appreciated more detail about the life of Jean-Robert. Another problem in "Circle of Pearls" is that Julia and Christopher, although interesting characters, are not that lovable and I felt more invested in the character of Adam but Ms. Laker did not focus on him enough. I liked Mary and wished that Ms. Laker would have transferred some of the enterprising spirit that Julia possessed onto her. Anne's plight was especially poignant and tragic and Katherine's past could have made up a book in itself. Basically, my problem is that Ms. Laker did not double the size of this book so that the story would have been more complete. I understand that the novel could only be a certain size, but if Ms. Laker spent so much time on Julia's childhood, she should have spent as much time on her adulthood.

One of her best!

This was the first Laker book I read and, I have to say, it is amazing! The details about the house, the era, the dress, everything is just superb. After reading this I was really into furniture with hidden compartments and, of course, reading more Rosalind Laker novels. Her books will never go out of style!

Totally Blew me away!!Need the next one ASAP!!
I didn't think she could top Fear University, man was I wrong!

The Killing Season answered questions yet gave us so many new ones!! ~Warning~I would not read this book near a sleeping child or pet.. you will scream out loud a few times.
I really liked Luke in FU but now I'm in love! Hatter has grown on me and I have a feeling that we will be seeing a lot more of him and Sunny in the next book.
I am positive this should be made into a movie!

Meg Collett has a very vivid imagination and I thank her each day that she shares it with us.

*I received a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

 I just read one of the best stories I've ever read in my life and I'm not even sure I can pull my head together long enough to write a review. I'm completely stunned. Shocked. In despair. This series just replaced one of my top 5. The same top 5 I've been looking to add to for over a year. Add to...not replace. What just happened and how am I going to survive until book 3 releases? I can't remember the last time I felt like this.

And where do I even begin? The Killing Season reeks of dark seduction. And have I ever loved a female protagonist this much before?! This book has my head spinning! Everything in it is intense and heated! The witty bantering is actually witty and holy h*ll I'm in love with a bad a** alpha female and an alpha male who is just as deadly and twisted. There may be an abundance of hard core heroines and their snarky attitudes in the lit world, but they can go home because Ollie takes the cake.  And Luke is every womans darkest desire. He doesn't provoke cute butterflies. He consumes with destruction and fire.

And Sunny, Ollie's best friend and the other point of view presented throughout the story, is so sweet and just the right amount of geeky hilarity that falling in love with her is only natural. However, even she is tainted by the madness and fear. No one in this story is left unscathed and in tact. Every single character in this book maticulously evolves into someone stronger and foreboding. 

I don't know how I'm going to make it until the next book.  It kept my heart racing  and adrenaline surging with twist and every, single shocking revelation. The Killing Season is a dark, intoxicating gem.  It's the reason reading a book becomes an addiction.  I've hopelessly been consumed by it and honestly do not know what to do with myself. Only one other author has ever had this effect on me. Ever.

I am afraid to read another book right now because I'm that person who tries to always maintain an open mind and much to an authors disdain I refuse to leave a bad review.  I know all reviews help, but I can't hurt someone's feelings. Despite my lack of reviews last year I had read at least 150 books searching for a series to annihilate my senses and satiate the need to completely lose my heart and soul to another world. Fear University stunned me because as hard as I've searched to grow a top 10 favorites list, this series just replaced one of the top 5 I've held in such high regard for so long. Before now I thought that feat altogether impossible. I can't seen to move past that.

I can't believe how things turned out and I'm super eager to see what happens next

As usual Meg did it again! I can't believe how things turned out and I'm super eager to see what happens next. You thought you know what's going to happen next but theres's so many twists and turns on the plot and it will definitely keep you on the edge.

As usual Meg does not disappoint on this sequel. It gets better and better and I can't honestly wait to find out what happens next. You thought you knew what's going to happen next but there's a twist on every corner! I didn't expect Coldcrow's character to be as such but then again after what's been revealed I guess I'm not surprised and didn't feel bad for him at all. My heart aches for Ollie and I hope that in the end she would be the same feisty woman I grew to love. Luke needs to get his s*** together so he can do what he needs to do and I hope that this will have a HEA. Sigh... I want the 3rd book now!!! LOL.

Malik shows Chrissi deep space and her dreams of seeing space come true!

WOW!!!!! ABSOLUTELY WONDERFULLY FABULOUS BOOK!!!! Harmony Raines shows us in this third book of Warriors of Karal why she is an excellent author. "Taken: BBW Alien Lottery Romance" to me is the best book in the series so far. Harmony takes a Karal Warrior and a Earth girl and weaves a fabulous story for the pair. She takes the story line and weaves the characters into it so that you can read a truly amazing story. In her Karal books you will always find mystery and lots of sex. You can read the book and feel the emotions of everyone in the book. I felt sorrow for the trouble of the girl in the story, I felt anger because of what happened to her at the hands of her boss, I hated that she felt the alien lottery was her only salvation, but was happy for her when she was mated with an alien that helped her realize her dream of seeing the moon from space, and so many other emotions to be felt as you read the book. I never lost any momentum from the time I started the book till I finished it. An absolute must read for ages 18 and over.

Chrissi trained so very hard to be an astronaut. She wanted to be one so bad so that she could continue to follow her dad's dream of "Operation Savior" which should help the people of Earth finding a new home. Just days before she was to fly into space her flight was cancelled and NASA shut down. This was because of the appearance of the Karalian people on earth. The only job she could get was in a factory keeping machines up and running. With her trial period up and her boss wanting her to trade her virtue for a job, she felt she had no options but to join the lottery. It was at least a way to get into space.

Malik is a Karalian Warrior and is part of the ground crew for the deep space missions. But because the mate for the pilot that is suppose to go took sick and the Karal Hierarchy didn't want any sick people on Karal, so Malik was asked to go in his place. Malik would have a female from Earth of his own to take with him. Being a Karalian Warrior Malik believes they should just take what females they need and forget finding a home for the Earth people. After meeting Chrissi and finding out that she is different than he thought she would be, he soon learns to enjoy her company and even imagine that he is in love with her.

Malik knows the importance of this mission and knows that he is suppose to leave Chrissi if anything happens to her and return to Karal. When she is taken from him by slavers he had to decide if he can leave her and return home with the information they have gathered, or if he is to risk all and go get the woman who has stolen his heart. Will he go home without her? Or will he go get her from the slavers?

Read the book to find out how the story will end. I am not telling you anything else about the book. This is a book with many hot, sexy love scenes and is a wonderful read for ages 18 and up. ARC free copy for honest review.

I love this series!

I love this series! Taken brings Chrissi, an Earth trained astronaut and Malik a warrior working the ground crew for the deep space missions together. Malik is pulled from the ground crew when the warrior slated to go on the mission had to be pulled because his mate was ill. Chrissi was a last minuet entry into the lottery. As much as I love Okil, Malik just may top him. While he does not understand the attachment Okil has to his mate, and him wanting to save the human's, he is willing to keep an open mind. When he meets Chrissi he starts to understand. A very sweet love story. With the birth of Elissa's daughter, Lytril is comitted to protecting Earth and Lillith. Can't wait to see were things are going to go from here.

Why the princess ate the stone.

I was very impressed by this book. A lot of books grab you by the scruff of the neck and drag you along. This one was like an old friend that you'll drop anything to talk to. I started reading it, and looked up 3 hours later, not realising time had passed. It was gripping, well thought out, well written and well put together. I'd have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone, and look forward with anticipation to the sequel.

I think it's obvious that the author is a reader of Terry Pratchett, as she pays a lot of attention to detail, researches well and knows how to put together a very good book. It was a very good read, to the point that I've read it three times. There's always something new!

A very good fantasy read

If half-stars were available I would have given this 4 1/2, because I reserve 5-star status for books that I want to reread immediately. But I enjoyed the book so much that I didn't want to downgrade to 4 stars, so.... A fantasy about a princess who doesn't want to love, or even feel, plus seven (at least) princes vying for her hand, an evil magician in a land supposedly bereft of magic, some good magicians, and a dragon. What more could you ask? The characterization of the princes, with their varying personalities and problems was very good. The plot took a little getting into at first, as the various princes arrived, but it grew to a very exciting conclusion. I look forward to a sequel!

This was a fantastic tale! Nicole's words wove together a rich tapestry of a story that captured my imagination. Well worth the read, I actually lost sleep in favor of finishing the story. My mom stole the book halfway through us reading together and finished it before I could. (My mom doesn't read very often unless a book can spark her interest and hold her attention.) We both eagerly await the next book!

Promises Kept--A Real Winner!

This book is an American treasure. The true story of one couple's promises to each other; their enduring love, commitment, and the ability to overcome the tragedy which almost took Len's life in the Vietnam War, grabs the reader from page one. And it continues to hold him/her through the steamy, bug-infested jungles of Vietnam, where the VC awaits around every corner, and the infantrymen of the 199th Light Infantry Brigade never know which day may be their last. The tension and emotion continue in the black days following Len's horrific head injury, when he is taken back home on a stretcher, the doctors doubtful he will survive; to the love of a young wife who stands by his side 'for better or for worse' as she helps her husband learn to walk and talk again, and to retain his dignity. The reader cannot help but root for Len, who is deemed by the VA to be 'untrainable,' as he struggles to finish college, and when he does, shares his pride. And he/she cannot help but celebrate with Len and Lu on the day their daughter is born--the child who was not supposed to be--the child who brings so much joy into their lives. This book definitely has something for every reader, young or old; whether he or she is currently serving in the military or has served at any time, or in any war. It grabs the reader who relishes a true and enduring love story; or one who loves reading about two humans' endurance, and their ability to overcome all the odds stacked against them. As for myself, I also found this book to be very healing. Being a Vietnam War widow, I at last experienced first-hand the horribleness of this war and the unbelievable struggles of the soldiers fighting it. And at the same time, I finally came to more fully understand why it had to be fought. More than anything else, however, I found myself in such awe and admiration of the young couple within the pages of this fine book. For their life story is surely a miracle come true--one of many 'promises kept.'

The Most Inspiring Book You Will Ever Read

Len Rugh was shot in the head by an AK-47 round during a patrol in the jungles of Vietnam. Instead of becoming one of the over 58,000 names on `The Wall' in Washington DC, he survived and made it home, carried on a stretcher, more dead than alive. The book, Promises Kept How One Couple's Love Survived Vietnam, tells the story of how his wife, Luanna, stood by his side, how he was able to live a full and rich life-despite his limitations, how love survived against all odds, and how he gained peace thirty-one years after returning from the war.
The story begins at the moment Len's draft notice arrived in August, 1968 and continues to the present. Len began writing the book over twenty years ago. Its publication is evidence of his dedication to the project, Luanna's support and encouragement, and their willingness to tell the whole story.
The book will prove inspiration to all those who have suffered head injury, those who love them, Vietnam vets and their families, and everyone who enjoys a well-told story. It's about far more than Vietnam or injury or recovery. It's a testament to gritty determination and the triumph of love.

Informative, shocking, and inspiring: an excellent memoir and true love story

Promises Kept is an extremely moving memorial of Mr. Rugh's service for the United States of America during the Vietnam war. His narrative of being plucked from his happy life and then plunged into the madness of the jungle warzone and the years after is well written.
I enjoyed the insider's view of what it was like to be there. I learned so much. The book takes you from his time in combat, to his recovery from a devastating brain injury (that he conquered to the surprise of his doctors), to parenthood and life after war and injury. Mr. Rugh's refusal to accept defeat (in so many ways) is truly inspiring.
Mrs. Rugh's addition to the story (through letters and co-authored chapters) gives an excellent view of what it is like to be part of the recovery team. Her perspective helps to create a more whole picture of the reach of brain injury and the aftermath of serving in combat. Her strong yet gentle voice is inspiring.
The letters, narrative, and gentle voices of both authors provides a good story with an inspiring message- keep your promises and let true love carry you.
I highly recommend this incredible book.
