The best stories are those of Gingerbread and Keisha, Eric, Mickey and Linette, Sonia, and Drew. The slang, though fairly dated, rings tough and contemporary, and teen romance is perfectly hit, whether its good or bad. The best thing about Life is Funny is that each story, no matter how serious or tragic, is lined with humor, and the story changes when you switch to a diffrent personality. Evreyone looks on each other thinking their the most troubled, but really they all are

3.5 Emotional Stars

"I missed you like crazy. I'll love you forever."

When I first saw that blurb I knew that I had to read this book. It sounded angsty, emotional, and oh so beautiful at the same time. And after finishing reading it I can definitely tell you that it was all those things, and more. Never Let You Go was a heart wrenchingly beautiful story about soul mates that get reunited after ten years apart and a tragedy that marked them both. The entire time I was reading I had knots in my stomach. That alone should tell you something.

This is a story inspired by Hansel and Gretel but it's with a brilliant spin. Holden and Griselda first met as foster children and formed a bond that tethered them together for life. When sent on an errand together by their foster mother, they get abducted and live through three years of brutal captivity and mental abuse at the hands of a monster. When they get the opportunity to run, tragically one of them doesn't make it and it irrevocably changes the course of both their lives.

"...she could not- she would not- give up on him until she knew for sure that he was dead. Until then, she would keep looking...because she owed him, because once upon a sweet and terrible time, she'd loved him, and he'd loved her in return."

Griselda has never given up on searching for Holden. She's a shell of the person she once was; forced to live with crippling guilt over being free and knowing that Holden was left behind. She punishes herself with relationships that are empty and abusive. She doesn't believe she deserves to be happy. Not until she finds him and knows for sure if he survived or not.

Her current boyfriend is no exception to this. The man is absolutely vile. While I want to say that this should have made Griselda weak or self pitying, it wasn't. Considering her past and what happened, it fits. Having her be any other way just wouldn't fit the story. So if you're expecting some sassy bad--s heroine, you won't find it here.

"Are you whole or broken?"
"I'm b-broken," he finally whispered. "But I think I could be whole again."

Holden has believed Griselda dead all this time. He's not the boy that he once was. His heart died right along with Griselda and all that's left is the shell of man that feels through f-----g and fighting. When an underground fight brings these two together again, they're forced to confront the people that they became and try to heal the shattered pieces broken by their shared past.

Both these characters have issues. Their past made sure of it and their present supported it. They may not be perfect, but they were perfect for each other.

"She's the bright sun. And he's the quiet end of day."

If you're looking for a book that will make you feel and make you feel it hard, this is that book. Believe me when I tell you it's one of those stories that will stay with you for quite a while. It was just that powerful and beautifully written.

So why 3.5 stars? It's tough to explain because it's a fairly spoiler so I'll try to be vague here I hate so be forewarned SPOILER AHEAD, absolutely loathe (pregnancy by the ow), and it doesn't matter how it's written because it never works for me. I'm talking make me want to throw my kindle at the wall or beat my head with it kind of hate. This is an extreme personal bias of mine and I struggled with my rating because of it. While I wanted to rate the book higher simply because it was an amazing story, this particular plot device managed to sour my enjoyment of it quite a bit. So much so, that I found it to be a very big part of the story while I didn't find it necessary to be. I just didn't believe that the story needed it, if that even makes sense. What was the ultimate nail on the coffin for me was the reasoning behind it and how it was resolved. I actually disliked that even more. (Though it's fair to note that there is absolutely positively NO cheating in this book)

I loved the premise of this book and I truly loved the writing. Katy Regnery manages to wrench every single emotion from the reader from heartache, to tears, to lust, and a love so epic it gives you butterflies.

"For all my life- all my life- you have been my beating heart, the woman of my dreams.

I really wish I could rate it higher but unfortunately my own bias just worked against this book way too much. As much as I tried to look past it, I just couldn't. Do I recommend this book? Absolutely! I really don't think it's a book that should be missed. Is this particular plot issue going to work for others? Sure. Like I said, this is a personal bias of mine and it doesn't matter how great a book is, it will always work against it. But even if you hate it just as I did, you'll still want to read this story. It was that touching. So while I may not have loved every aspect of it, it's certainly not a book I'll be forgetting any time soon

Good story. Just not my cup of tea.

Let me start out by saying that the only reason Never Let You Go(NLYG) got a 3 star from me is because it was just not MY cup of tea.

So, please do not think this will be a negative review involving a lot of criticism of the characters or the plot. In fact, I’m sure most readers will enjoy the story and the characters. I am just not one of them.

NLYG has all the makings of a Lifetime movie. And that’s a good thing. It’s about Holden and Griselda (terrible name but I get the whole Gretel reference) and how they were kidnapped by a mentally disturbed individual and held captive for three years. Like the book blurb states, one of them got away and the other was left behind. This book is about their journey to finding each other and becoming whole again. Interesting right?

The writing is very fluid and descriptive. There are a lot of flashbacks. These provide the reader with all the history. How Holden and Gris met and became friends. How they were each other’s safe place during their years in captivity. How when they were reunited…….well, I’m not going to spoil it for those of you who want to read this book. Trust me when I say that Holden and Gris will feel very much like real people.

Why am I giving NLYG only 3 stars? Now there are very few authors (such as Kristen Ashley) who can hold my interest for more than 300 pages. And this book really did have all the elements necessary for a bestseller BUUUUUT imagine this-a book that is 450 pages in length and the H/h only meet, in present time, at the 25% mark (according to my Kindle). I’m all for building the tension and angst (yes, lots and lots and LOTS of it and some of it seemed contrived) but this was just a bit too much for ME. Still, I like to think that I'm not a quitter. So I kept reading hoping that the story would smooth itself out. It didn’t. At least until the point I stopped reading it. Yes, I did indeed quit. This was a DNF for me.

So, that’s my review. And just to reiterate-this was more of a ME issue than a NLYG/author issue. I’m positive Never Let You Go will be a big hit. It just wasn’t with me.

A 5 star masterpiece

I was lucky to receive an ARC of this masterpiece which absolutely consumed me! After I finished it I was so overwhelmed. This book gave me all the feels. I can tell with absolute certainty that Never Let You Go is one of the most emotional and gut-wrenching love stories I've ever read. Katy Regnery left a permanent mark on my heart with this book that exceeded all my expectations.

Be warned that this book is not an easy read and it's Katy Regnery's darkest book so far! It contains some very sensitive topics like abduction and abuse. I can assure you that she handled these topics very well, not many authors are able to do that.

The author's writing is very captivating. Her words penetrate your heart and mind and you can't help but feel very connected to the characters and their story.

Griselda Schroeder and Holden Croft were both foster children that were kidnapped at the age of ten by a mentaly ill man. He held them captive on his farm in his cellar until they both tried to escape three years later. Unfortunately only Gris managed to flee leaving Holden behind.

10 years have passed. Griselda is living an unhappy life full of regret. She never stopped thinking about Holden. Now she is living together with her abusive and possesive boyfriend Jonah whom she doesn't love. She tolerates him because she believes that she doesn't deserve to be happy. Griselda is secretly saving money to find Holden and is only living because she needs to know what happend to the boy who made her life bearable when it should have killed her.

Gris spends a weekend with Jonah in West Virginia where she is plagued with a lot of memories. One evening they attend a fist-fight where she unexpectedly meets Holden again. But Holden Croft is now Seth West and has grown into a handsome young man with a lot of tattoos and a broken heart.

Holden is shocked but happy to see Gris again. He believed that Gris died while trying to safe them both. Since ten years his heart was dead because it died with her, the only girl he ever loved.

The two of them decide to spent one month at a cabin in the woods and get to know each other again. Their chemistry is off the charts and they soon can't keep their hands from each other. Unfortunately their happy reunion is soon interrupted by some shocking news forcing these two apart again.

Will these two finally find their way back to each other? In order to find out you need to read this amazing book!

I loved Holden and Griselda. They are not perfect and flawless which makes them only human like all of us! Their struggles were realistic. They figured out that in order to be happy together they first needed to be happy with themselves. These two broken people inspired each other to grow and made each other whole again. Their love story is truly epic!

Katy Regnery managed to break my heart with this book and put it back together. I would give this book 6 stars if it were possible. I highly recommend it to everyone!

About the Author
Hearn (1850-1904) was born in Levkas, Greece, as the son of Greek and British parents. In 1869 he went to the United States and did various work, finally as a journalist. In 1890 he came to Japan and taught English in Japanese schools, and became a Japanese citizen under the name of Koizumi Yakuma. He died in Tokyo.

A study of Japanese ghostly traditions

"In Ghostly Japan" is a collection of old ghost stories, traditions dealing with ghosts, and personal ruminations on the afterlife by the turn-of-the-century Japanese scholar Lufcadio Hearn.
Much of the collection is short essays on Japanese traditions such as "Incense," and how incense relates to ghosts in terms of the Shinto and Buddhist religion. There is a true story of an accurate fortune teller know to the author, in "A Story of Divination." "Bits of Poetry" and "Japanese Buddhist Proverbs" translates and teaches several bits of Japanese lore as they relate to the world of the dead.
Some essays, such as "Silkworms," are pure conjecture, relating the human ideals of paradise to the daily lives of silkworms. "Suggestion" is a conversation between the author and a monk on the nature of gender and re-birth in the Buddhist tradition.
Of true ghost stories, there are few. Many of the ghost stories, such as "Furisode," begin with a short lesson about something Japanese, in this case a long-sleeved Kimono known as a Furisode, and then relates a ghost story dealing with the object. Some, such as "Ingwa-banashi," are pure chilling horror that make you cringe. Other true ghost stories in this collection are "Story of a Tengu," "Ululation," "Fragment" and "A Passional Karma."
One of my favorites, a short story called "At Yaidzu," tells of the author swimming out amongst the Obon lanterns, which are put to see to guide home the spirits of the dead, and the feeling he gets being in the Ocean amongst the returning dead. Truly creepy.
All in all, "In Ghostly Japan" is a bit more scholarly than ghastly. The writing style is like many books from the 1880's, a bit dry and non-thrilling. It is a good resource for learning about the Ghostly traditions of Japan, but those seeking a collection of Japanese ghost stories will be disappointed.

Like Meeting a Buddha in Hell

In my snobbier moments I'm somewhat annoyed when people read a book because they saw its movie adaptation. Why not start at the source? It's a sad, sad day indeed when it takes Hollywood to get people to sit down with a good, classic book. Etcetera etcetera. Well, here I am, guilty of much the same, the karmic consequences of my snobbery having come back around to bite me. Years ago I saw the film "Kwaidan" (based on Lafcadio Hearn's retellings of traditional Japanese ghost tales) and loved it, and that's basically what inspired me to read "In Ghostly Japan" here. Which means that I was misled by the title just a bit, for this book is a mixed bag of short pieces, some of which are ghost tales but many of which are not, or not exactly anyway. This was a pleasant surprise, however. Hearn writes of Buddhism in real, down-to-earth Japanese culture (for this, if anything, is the overarching theme of the miscellany, the ghost stories being folkloric examples of Buddhist causality and karma) in an eloquent, personal style redolent of the Romantic flowing rhythms of late 19th-century prose but undergirded by a very solid but understated, unpretentious erudition. The guy knows what he's talking about. His keenly observant and sympathetic eye catches how Buddhism really operates in the Japanese imagination and how it manifests in proverbs and customs and such, but he then goes on to shed much light on these phenomena by analyzing and interpreting them in terms of formal Buddhist scriptures and doctrines--all of which sounds like pretty dry stuff, but it's actually enjoyable and fascinating, even entertaining, due to Hearn's wonderful presentation. Somehow he transcended the tired, misleading "great tradition"/"little tradition" dichotomy (a.k.a. the elite/folk religion dichotomy) before it even started and deftly avoided the twin pitfalls of Anthropology and Buddhist Studies early in the game--all without a bunch of tedious methodological navel-meditating. And what's more, he did so in style! The spooky tales of the karmically unquiet are cool too, of course. Once you start reading, there's not a ghost of a chance you'll be able to put this book down.

I am so excited about this new series by F. Sharon Swope and Genilee Swope-Parente. I love a good mystery/romance book and this one did a great job of feeding my appetite. Having a main character in a wheelchair really intrigued me and I must say I was not disappointed in where the character went. The main detective, Sam Osbourne is a captavating character and I can't wait to read the next book in the series! What a great book! Twist of Fate was the perfect combination of mystery and romance. I loved trying to guess who the "bad guy" was, and the chemistry between Danny and Casey was great! I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out. -Amazon reader I thoroughly enjoyed this book and felt that it was well balanced between a compelling love story and a good detective story. Amazon reader Found this series totally by accident by reading a colleague's blog, saw a note about Wretched Fate and raced to amazon to get the first in the detective series. It was a fun and easy read, set in a snowy Lancaster PA snowstorm--it was a perfect read just as upstate NY got a nice snowstorm. Wheelchair bound Casey, who will be coming into her inheritance, hires private investigator Sam Osborne to find out who is trying to kill her. Problem is, the attempts on her life all appear to be "accidents" at face value. Then a stranger enters her house in the middle of a snowstorm. Nice mystery to figure out and a little romance thrown in. What I liked best was it almost felt 'old-fashioned', and that's a compliment! It had such a pleasantness about it; there were no gory scenes and excessive swearing. Just a wonderful mystery to curl up with. Amazon reader You really can't ask for more from a mystery novel. The plot centered around someone trying to kill wheelchair bound and likeable Casey. Almost every character that was introduced in the book had a very plausible and realistic reason to want Casey dead. About the Author
A long-time newspaper columnist who didn't start writing books until age 82 and continues well into her 80s with the popular Fate Series. She also writes short stories and is collaborating with her daughter on several other books in the series.

I am so excited about this new series by F. Sharon Swope and Genilee Swope-Parente. I love a good mystery/romance book and this one did a great job of feeding my appetite. Having a main character in a wheelchair really intrigued me and I must say I was not disappointed in where the character went. The main detective, Sam Osbourne is a captavating character and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Doesn't Disappoint

There is probably no better test for a novel than not being able to put it down. Once I got a few pages into "Twist of Fate," I was hooked. The characters engage, the plot often leaves you wondering and the authors keep the pace going until the very end. Overall it's just a fun, entertaining read and I can't wait until the next book in this series comes out. It will definitely be a "must have" on my reading list.

An entertaining and fast-paced book that grabs your attention and won't let go. Casey is a wealthy young woman who has been wheelchair bound since the terrible accident that claimed the lives of her parents. Casey stands to inherit her father's pharmaceutical company on her 21st birthday, but someone is trying to make sure that doesn't happen. A unique twist of fate leads a homeless man, Danny, to Casey's house in a snowstorm to discover her almost frozen to death in the latest attempt on her life. Danny and Sam, a private detective hired by Casey, piece the puzzle together to find out who's trying to kill her.

About the Author
Lynn A. Blackwood earned a BBA from New Mexico State University. His working career in ministry includes serving with Campus Crusade for Christ/CRU at both the University of Minnesota and the University of Northern Colorado, working as a youth pastor at Emmanuel Baptist Church, and missionary stints in Mexico, the Philippines, and China. Lynn is also a board member with the National Day of Care. Th is international ministry features, "Houses of Hope" which sends teams to Nairobi, Kenya, to build zomes for orphaned children. Lynn also studied at the International School of Th eology. Lynn worked as a fi refi ghter, and currently holds a management position with a regional Foodservice company where he has been recognized for his signifi cant contribution. Empty advice for religious sheep,waste of money

I am trying really hard to find any substance in this book, but right when I think I am about to learn a useful piece of advice, the author switches to religious babbling about some unrelated biblical event. Even if you buy in to the religious speak, it offers no solutions to the actual psychological problems that need to be worked on. Just blame it on god's plan! Simple enough.
