Review
In this honest to the bone, mesmerizing memoir about life with an adult autistic son, Robert Hughes exposes the wretched reality that typically faces special needs adults and their loved ones. But beneath the surface of outrage toward a society that does so little for our most vulnerable people, Hughes graciously elevates the good in the human spirit each time he finds it. Ultimately, this is a story of a family's determination to use their eccentricities, wit, optimism, wisdom, and love for each other, to thwart a broken system that dared to challenge Walker's right to live happy and well. -- Liane Holliday Willey, author of Pretending to be Normal: Living with Asperger's Syndrome and Safety Skills for Asperger Women: How to Save a Perfectly Good Female Life

one of my favorite features of the text
By Ethel Tiersky
AN INSPIRING BOOK!
Robert Hughes' second memoir about his autistic son (now an adult) is a page-turner with a "plot," humor, many allusions to literature and film, and triumphant moments amidst a truckload of difficulties.
The author invites us into his home and along on father-son excursions to see how Walker and his family deal with his "crippling inability to communicate." Instead of saying. "I must escape from this crowded, noisy place right now," Walker is more likely to shout "Car!" However, his father's insights and imagination often translate his son's thoughts for us, one of my favorite features of the text.
Though Walker can be difficult to handle at times, his family enjoys his cheerful nature and nurtures his happy smile. The story ends with a moment of pure joy for Walker, orchestrated by his parents and brother.
This book is about two challenges--1) successfully interacting with a severely handicapped person; and 2) negotiating with social service facilities that are supposed to be providing help. To accomplish both, what's needed? What the Hughes family has--love, patience, perseverance, and the ability to cherish small steps forward.

A family's determination
By Joanna J.
This is an intimate and honest story of a family's experience with their adult son with autism.
The author pulls you into the story with an adeptness that makes you feel the parents' unrelenting anguish and concern for their son, and, also their unabiding love. Their hope and determination that their son will have the best life possible endures throughout the story. It also brings attention to a subject of much importance. Increasing numbers of children with autism will need and deserve adequate and meaningful services as they reach adulthood and beyond. I highly recommend this book.

A follow-up to one of my favorite memoirs
By Audrey
I read Hughes' first memoir Running with Walker: A Memoir several years ago, and was pleased to see he had written a follow up. What I love about this book is that despite the sometimes agonizing trials the Hughes family face in searching for a new group home for their adult autistic son, the story is told without an ounce of self-pity. Hughes is one of the most accessible writers I’ve come across--not just his style, which is open and straightforward, but in the way he lets you into his life. Walker Finds a Way is harrowing at times…nail bitingly so…but also funny, moving, and ultimately, a triumph.
Reading Walker Finds a Way, you feel humbled, not knowing if you could endure what he and his family have endured (the hours-long walks in sub-zero temperatures throughout Chicago, with bad knees no less, the endless hospital visits, the helplessness at being at the mercy of so many other systems and policies and people) without falling apart. What is infinitely moving to me about the story is the way Hughes gives Walker agency throughout, e.g. recognizing how Walker does all he can to make a good impression on the professionals who hold his fate in their hands. It’s Hughes’ memoir, but in a way, it’s Walker’s memoir too.
