In 2013, an old man's chauffeur-cum-cook begins to journal the story of M-i-s-t-e-r B. Joseph Byk was born in 1916, the Rhode Island son of Polish immigrants. By the end of his senior year at Woonsocket High, the joke's on him! He regrets his missing geometry lessons. Why? Because suddenly, he aspires to design vehicles that defy gravity. Luckily, Joe Byk’s high school counselor helps him enroll in Auburn University to hone up on his math deficiency and proceed to the Alabama State University. These were inexpensive land grant colleges for children of poor means. Turns out, after graduation, Mister B’s career begins with his childhood credentials as a paper boy. He is given a good ol’ boy’s recommendation on the back of a Rhode Island banker’s business card. With that reference to Vultee, in Downey, California, Joe helps to engineer basic trainer war planes. When at the beginning of WWII, he transfers to the Glen Martin Company in Baltimore, Maryland, he continues to perform stress analysis on space craft, ship bulkheads and airships throughout the cold war. He will eventually help to design the space shuttle Gemini, the tripod for the first moon landing gear of the Viking Lander and the beginnings of Google Earth. He helps to design the BT-13, the Vibrator, the repairs to the broken FDR carrier, and the first man-rated spacecraft capsule and dome. Now, at 98, Mister B is one heck of a grandpa!

About the Author
Lynn Byk managed a Berean Bookstore after graduation from Colorado Christian University where she obtained a B.A. in Contemporary Composition. In this memoir, she is informed by her caretaker relationship with her father-in-law, Mister B, the rocket scientist, himself.
Joseph Byk received his PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Alabama. He taught pilots in the air corps with Spartan Company and then worked through WWII with Vultee and the cold war with Martin Company performing projects for NASA and the Department of Defense.
Kathryn Kowalchik Swezy is a career graphic artist in Colorado and is the Art Director/Principal at KS Design and a Consultant in Marketing & Communication at Lakeshore Staffing. She has worked for 5280 Magazine, several well known travel magazines and Craig Hospital PR. She studied Graphic Design at Ray College of Design

I laughed and cried reading Mister B. The tragedy that put these three folks together may be something that displaced families around the world have felt, but the combination of characters in the book, and the juxtaposition of cultures in spiritual corners, made this memoir explode for me. This is a must read for anyone who has ever struggled with bridging generational gaps. It's a must read for anyone involved in family relationships. The time spent reading Mr. B. is time well spent.

Amazing book. Here's a special portion that I enjoyed, "We plan to forge through the snowdrifts in our car tonight to bank on Joe's 98th birthday celebration. Can't wait. Right after we watch 'Zorro,' that is...After it finishes, I hand him the present I've been saving. It's a light blue and white wool sweater, size large...He comically mimics a lady model with his hips out and turns in slow circles with his hand in the air to show it off...I plant a red-lipped smooch on his cheek. Paul alerts his father to the fact and leans over to get a tissue. Joe swats his son's hand, 'Leave it.'"

A delightfully insightful book with nuggets of wisdom as well as fascinating historical facts.

I definitly enjoyed this wonderful read from the perspective of a woman whose life was going and one direction and suddenly turned a sharp corner to land in her father-in-laws home. It is a sweetly honest and insightful story in their lives as they begin to appreciate one another and learn details about life together. The historical perspective offered from Mr. B was incredible and truly worth the read as well as the authors perspective .
I would recommend this book to anyone who is a curious student of life and what gems it offers through circumstances we cannot foresee.
