Outstanding PA fiction with deep characters and tight plot

This is a great novel. I consider it more "post apocalypse" than "prepper", but it certainly fits both genres. The writing is very good, the characters are well-developed, and the plot is fast-paced without being rushed. I know a lot of "prepper fiction" could use better writing/editing, but not this one. And instead of focusing on the barrel length of someone's rifle and the modifications they made to it, or the minutia of catching and cleaning a rabbit, this book is firmly focused on the *characters and plot*. It also manages to tell a compelling story without getting all preachy the way some of this book's genre do. Basically I'm saying that if you like suspenseful/dark post apocalypse fiction or dystopian fiction, and you appreciate a tight plot and characters with depth and growth, and you enjoy an exciting action story, then you'll love this book!

multiple perspectives done right

I'm 3/4 through this book, and I've enjoyed it so far. I agree with the previous poster, its more post apocalyptic than "prepper". I read a lot of "prepper" books, mostly because they're more realistic, but find they can be annoying in the descriptions, as if the author decided to turn their manual into a novel. This story has thankfully does not go overboard in that area. The main character is described as a "prepper" by saying she has a year supply of food back at home. Got it! And thank you.
As far as the story telling itself, I like the different perspectives, and how the author has made their paths interconnect in a believable way without creating far fetched scenarios that require a suspension of disbelief.
And one last note, as some readers don't like this; as the story progresses, we get the perspectives of more characters than the three main characters. I've read reviews on other books where the reviewers said it made their head swim. I think this author has done this very well by giving a new perspective from a character that we've already been introduced to and care about; so we care about their POV.
The only thing I've found is the usual need for a closer proofread. Grammatically it's pretty well done (again, thank you), but in one chapter the campers name was used when it should've been "Ethan". I was tired, and went back a page to reread to make sure, and sure enough, it was a slip up enough to pull me out of the story for a minute...but that was it.
Great so far, I hope it doesn't end with aliens or zombies or some other ridiculous thing. I recommend it to SHTF fans but those like detailed prepper manual type novels might be disappointed by the lack of details.

A thoroughly engaging read, likable characters, skilled narrative. A fine story.

When I bought this ebook, I hoped for a quick, fast-paced read with characters developed enough to think and maybe even care about after I'd finished, and without a lot of how-to or philosophical blather. Most of all, I wanted good story to spend a few hours with. Yeah, I know, that's asking a lot of one of these low-end Amazon ebooks.
This book, somewhat unexpectedly, delivered exactly what I wanted - and more. For such a short book (170-something pages) this well delivered tale hooked me thoroughly for the next one in the series. I like a good series, and judging by this first entry, Holden's "Dark New World" is going to have me hooked for a good long while.
A note about the POV shifts and focus changes some reviewers found jarring. Many writers, from Vonnegut on, use short sections and frequent shifts in focus as a way to describe a central event or a period of chaotic action "from the outside in," without having to resort to exposition. In a way, it's a form of "show, don't tell" and Holden uses it well here. What could be more chaotic than the hours and days immediately following the total infrastructure collapse that an EMP attack would cause? Holden uses short sections and focus shifting to get this across, and it works. As a reader, Holden's narrative skill immersed me believably in a chaos the U.S. has been lucky enough to avoid so far.
As chaos set in following the kickoff EMP attack, I found people's responses to it completely plausible. From getting drunk, to staying low while sneaking out of Dodge, to stealing whatever is available before it's gone, Holden describes the response without judgment. It's just how people are, and I found myself nodding my head at these characters, even the "worst" ones, more than once. This writer's comfort with human nature shows through brilliantly as the wide range of his characters meet and mesh and clash through the first few chapters.
But more than the skillful focus changes, I found the POV (point of view) changes impressive and skillfully executed. Offhand, I can think of one established series - the wonderful SciFi "Liaden" series by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller - that makes a basic narrative technique out of POV shifts inside the storytelling to telegraph which character now has the focus. Holden does this as well as Lee and Miller, and to as good effect. That's pretty strong praise, considering what masters Lee and Miller are of the technique. I found myself shifting between and "being" casual prepper Cassie (only arguably the main protagonist), family man Frank, street survivor Jaz, and other characters effortlessly, just from the narrative alone.
Holden does this by making the viewpoint so identifiable as feelings or perceptions that one character might have but not another, that I sometimes shifted viewpoint without realizing it until later. It's more than changing the use of contractions and dialects and a character's own internal angers or uncertainties. It's a change in how the whole immediate world is understood. I never felt a wrenching change when the POV switched between (mostly) the main characters, because the narrative always prepared me for the switch. That's impressive, communicating all that solely from the narrative, and it's what pulled a fifth star from me.
Others have already mentioned the pleasure of reading a little-known author's ebook without cringing at the lack of a competent editor. Holden knows the difference between a subject and an object (my personal favorite gripe about careless writers) and you won't find here the unfortunately common ignorance about when to use its or it's, or making other common punctuation mistakes. That's pleasant, after suffering through such awful use of language in most low-end books.
But my five-star rating is for the skillful use of narrative shifts and character points of view. These drew me in immediately and now I'm thoroughly hooked, in a genre I don't normally even read. Do yourself a favor - give this one a try.
