About the Author
Juliet is a singer, songwriter, recording artist, author, and teacher who was born and raised in Central Vermont. She spent much of her young life as an equestrian and was always active in music and theatre. She attended Interlochen Arts Academy from 1979-1982, where she studied piano, music composition, theatre, and dance. In 1986, she graduated from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida with a degree in Studio Music and Jazz Guitar Performance. After leaving Miami, Juliet moved to Burlington, Vermont to pursue her career as a jazz guitarist. Moving to Los Angeles in 1987, she pursued her career there as a guitarist and performer of pop and rock music. For the next 13 years, she made her living singing and playing the guitar, piano, and saxophone in clubs and at private functions all over California. She married Alex in 1996 and the two divorced in 2004. In 1997, Juliet began teaching general vocal music for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She moved back to Vermont in 2007, and she currently lives there. She writes books and composes and records her own music. She also teaches stringed instruments to elementary school students in a nearby Massachusetts school district. Her hobbies include writing and recording music, oil painting, knitting, and nurturing all the baby trees she has planted on her property. She is a devout Quaker and active in her Quaker Meeting. Codependency recovery is very important to Juliet, and she donates much of her time giving back to CoDA.

Spiritually courageous beyond words

This is the second humble, courageous, spiritual and, in large measure because of its unflinching honesty, remarkable book written by Juliet Wright that I’ve reviewed.

Ms. Wright’s growth as an individual is poignantly captured in the title of this book, Everything is for my recovery, as compared to the title of her first, Everything is my fault. The title of her first reflects the astonishing degree to which a person can lose sight of and belief in their value. After all, no one is ever at fault for everything, least of all, Ms. Wright.

One of the 12 promises in the 12-step program Ms. Wright goes to talks about learning to see one’s self as an equal to others. What this writer hopes, for Ms. Wright and for everyone, is they will increasingly discover that the fact their self is equal to other has always been true. That when life wounds us, in many instances by giving us the message we are not as valuable as others, we don’t simply lose sight our value, we are unhinged from our ability to believe our value is still present.

Ms. Wright’s book is testimony to her continued success in rediscovering the rather extraordinary person she clearly is.

I agree that much of Ms. Wright’s efforts over the last 10 years of her life have been for her recovery. But part of recovery, I believe, is a new and healthy relationship with our individuality. After all, God gave us our individuality, the right to be who we are, as the equals we are, one day at a time. There is no point in trying to be anyone but who we are. After all, Oscar Wilde had it right when he said, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

This wonderfully brave and spiritually aware book allows us to witness Ms. Wright’s journey back to self, the self God gave her. And I don’t know that it gets much better than that.

Searching and Finding with Juliet A. Wright

I loved books that are genuine, authentic spiritual journeys and Juliet Wright’s new book is one of those treasures. Reading her book, I am drawn to more searching, to spiritual quests, recalling an older Quaker woman who said to me after an educational session: “You Quakers, you are always searching and searching … don’t you ever find anything?”

Juliet’s book is one of searching and finding: through poetry, song and reflection, Juliet searches and finds the work of the soul in action. She plunges beneath the surface to illustrate what it means for the soul to voyage inward and to find gifts from her spiritual discipline, from the Divine and from the self-help literature of various 12-step programs. These findings remain a delight from deeply within her heart and soul. Thank you for these gifts, Juliet.

Centered on what started off as a small mining camp in West Virginia, the book is an interesting study on the history of the United States and the mining industry, particularly since it had such a major influence and drastic changes over the years. Weaving through the story, the reader can see the progress that occurred throughout the years; with the interesting twist that progress did not always have positive effects. As the years pass on and technology increases, we see the eventual decline of the town that the reader and her family so loved.
It's hard to read this book and not sense the love and passion that was put into its pages by the author. The book memorializes a family history while educating the reader about what life was really like in those times. The writing style makes the book an easy read and gives readers insight into a world they can never personally experience. About the Author
The forties and fifties were the end of an era for many of the boom towns and little coal camps of West Virginia. This book portrays life as seen through the eyes of a youngster (Lillian) and her family. Lillian was the youngest of seven children. The book begins generations before the coal camp life and what eventually brought her family to Minden. It tells of the struggles they endured as immigrants, as miners and as coal camp kids, as well as the happiness and pride and joy of providing for family and the life they shared. After college and marriage, Lillian moved from the area. There are no miners among their family today. Most family members have moved for jobs and careers, with only a few remaining in the area. Lillian is now in her sixties. She lives with her family in the foothills of the beautiful Bull Run Mountains in Virginia. She has worked forty-plus years in the private industry, real estate, and the security industry. This writing was a challenge and new endeavor for Lillian as well as one of passion.

While keeping up with all the names and lineage of the family can be a bit difficult at times throughout the book, the stories she tells humanizes the characters you are reading about. Births and deaths, love and loss, and the ordinary and the extraordinary all grab the reader’s attention and make the characters come alive to us. This honest narrative touches on both the good and negative in the family history, adding legitimacy to the writing that would have been missing had the author not done so. With the right balance of research and family tradition, this tale is historically accurate and personal at the same time.

Centered on what started off as a small mining camp in West Virginia, the book is an interesting study on the history of the United States and the mining industry, particularly since it had such a major influence and drastic changes over the years. Weaving through the story, the reader can see the progress that occurred throughout the years; with the interesting twist that progress did not always have positive effects. As the years pass on and technology increases, we see the eventual decline of the town that the reader and her family so loved.

It’s hard to read this book and not sense the love and passion that was put into its pages by the author. The book memorializes a family history while educating the reader about what life was really like in those times. The writing style makes the book an easy read and gives readers insight into a world they can never personally experience. I would recommend this book to anyone, history buff or not, that enjoys great storytelling.

It was like reliving my childhood in West Virginia.......

Having gone to school with Sissy and having recently reunited after 50 years, I couldn't wait to read this book. I can't imagine all the hours of research it took to record her family history as she did. I enjoyed the entire story of her family but really loved the chapters beginning with the '50s, which encompassed our childhoods. I am so happy she was able to record this most important family history for those of us who grew up in that area of West Virginia..... If you grew up in a West Virginia coal camp, you will want to read this book. I could almost smell the old slate dump and hear the train whistle coming from the New River. Thank you,Sissy, for sharing your family with us.

My "Dixon" family roots are from Minden and I grew up with the family in this book. Sissy, the author, certainly did her research and this book took me back to my childhood memories.

Let the Blood Bath Begin....

There is an old saying: "I don't know how WW III will be fought, but WW IV will be fought with clubs and spears."

The author is a bit more optimistic; muzzle loaders are the weapon of the day.

EXCEPT... a Russian Ultra-Putin character discovered an UNTOUCHED arms factory somewhere in Siberia and, presto, he has the ability to manufacture AK-47s. A game changer indeed. All that we readers need to is skip over the details, such as how does the factory get power in the middle of nowhere? Why does all the critical machinery work after 50 years of sitting idle? Where do the skilled machinists come from? How does the Putin-Man manufacture vast quantities of reliable bullets. As I said, mere details.

Concurrently, the Dictator or Brazil has miraculously gathered together a collection of genius engineers who are able to recreate military grade communications system and, better still, surface-to-surface missile control systems. All of which technology he shares with his colleague, the Dictator of China (who is in cahoots with the Dictator of Russia).

Sounds like Spectre Reborn; where's James Bond when we need him? Turns out, he's dead -- but not missed, because there are four Mars Brothers (all experts in warfare, as their surname implies). Beware villains!

By now you may have gotten the sense that I did not totally appreciate this novel (actually a Prequel and a Novel). True. Nonetheless, I read all the way through, just to see where it would end up. (Hello, Africa? Wanna do battle with North America?) But the fact that I read all the way through is somewhat favorable testament. And more important, novel rates three stars just for being a complete story. Creating a novel (or more than one) is an accomplishment not to be belittled. As a professional editor, I have respect for authors in general -- and this one deserves his due for imagination and perseverance.

Not my next World War

I was disappointed in the story. When the enemy disembarks on the Alaskan shore, for an assault presumably on the old Washington state, I gave up. That's the last place you'd want to disembark troops, unless you want to spend a year chopping down forests to get to the old (and probably overgrow) Alcan highway, you'd be better off sailing south for a few more days to land troops on the southern coast of British Columbia. This tale doesn't pass the smell test.
The author clearly intends to write sequels, but I won't be along for the read......

Great book!

WORLD WAR IV is a very fast paced and action packed novel. The world has barely recovered from World War III when World War IV breaks out. The Russians are invading America. The Chinese are invading Australia, America's ally. Enter the Mars brothers, Dean, Lance, and Jason. All three are former American soldiers. Dean and Jason are current American governors. Forced back into war, the Mars brothers will stop at nothing to drive the savage Russians from American soil and rescue their ally, Australia, from the massive Chinese naval fleet. To make matters worse, the Americans are hopelessly out-gunned as they only have single shot rifles and swords, while the Russians and Chinese have found a way to produce 'modern' weapons (AK-47s). There are no dull moments at all in this book, just cover-to-cover action set at a lightning-fast pace! It's a fun story and I highly recommend it.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 states, “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return to God who gave it” (NKJV). Rev 6:9–11 is proof that the soul is still alive after death. For example, if the cause of death is suicide or murder, the body/flesh has died but not the person’s spirit or soul. The disease process, old age, accidents, birth defects, suicide or murder that cause the body/flesh to die do not cause the spirit and soul to die. When a person takes his/her last breath here on earth, they are simply exiting their body to leave this earth and to enter the spirit world. Only the body (the flesh) dies and remains here on earth; the spirit and soul will live forever. We get to choose where that will be—heaven or hell. Regardless of what the catalysis to the death of the body is, each person’s physical decline is unique because we all are different, and no two medical histories or incidents are exactly the same. About the Author
About the Author Ms. Brenda Johnson (oldest daughter of city councilman, Joseph “Sunny” Vickers and Jackie Vickers) was born and raised in Valdosta, Georgia. Brenda relocated to Dallas, Texas, in 2000, where she began caring for the actively dying patient in twelve-hour shifts at bedside and has personally witnessed over 1,500 deaths and counting. In 2004, Brenda began documenting her observations concerning how to care about and manage the signs and symptoms a dying patient encounters. Brenda’s main goal is to educate the world on the natural process of dying in hopes that each individual person might feel comfortable with his/her own mortality enough to discuss it openly with family members—a subject that's "taboo" in most families all the way to the very end, resulting in no one truly having closure, especially the person dying. Brenda also attended Southern Bible Institute and Dallas Theological Seminary (Center for Biblical Studies). She lives in Mesquite, Texas, and has one son.

I received a copy of this book from a friend. Since I have been a Hospice nurse for many years, I was very surprised at the insight I gained from reading this book. I have read many books on providing care and support for the dying patient. This book surpasses all the others in that it brought in the Christian prospective, which none of the others addressed. It also addressed many simple task that never occurred to me, such as letting a child paint their loved ones fingernails. Thank you Brenda for the life and events you added to this book, it made it unique. But, most of all thank you for including our Lord.

Brenda was my moms hospice nurse. Without her knowledge and this book I couldn't have made it through my moms hospice care and death. It was the most unimaginable horrible thing to witness someone passing from cancer. Brenda made that process a lot less stressful.

Kathy Sheehan is a primary school teacher specialising in behaviour management. She has over 20 years experience as a behaviour consultant, a class teacher, an assistant principal and an acting principal. Kathy has taught in public, private, faith-based and alternative schools working with children aged 5 to 18. A serious accident at 22 sparked Kathy’s passion and relentless research to find a way to help kids cope with problems and believe in themselves. Her ‘Sparky and Shady’ program and series of books is the result. Kathy has two beautiful sons; Ashley aged 23 and Jack aged 11. She lives on the sunny east coast of Australia with Jeremy her handsome husband, Jack their adventurous son, Ranger their loyal puppy and their loving rabbit, Rosie.

This series really helps my preschooler understand money

Joe the Monkey Saves for a Goal is the first book in the "Share-Save-Spend Smart" series. I previously reviewed the book Joe the Monkey Learns to Share and I was very impressed. The series is great for helping kids see that money management is something they can do at any age.

It's not always easy to talk to your kids about money. You want them to develop good financial habits, but where do you start? I was talking about this with my cousin Lisa just the other day (Well, she's the wife of my partner's second cousin once removed, so...I guess I was talking about this with my friend Lisa). We have kids the same age (3 1/2) and she was saying her son was asking her where quarters come from and how he could get more quarters for his collection. I told her how we had been talking to our own child, Magda, about money using a "three jars" concept that we learned about from the book Joe the Monkey Learns to Share.

The idea is that children divide up their money (whether it's allowance, birthday money, etc.) into "spend," "save" and "share" jars (we also added a fourth jar called "invest" for money that goes directly into the bank). Some of their money can be used for immediate goals, like buying little treats (the "spend" jar) but if they want to buy something big they'll need to save up (the "save" jar). This book is specifically about the save jar.

Joe the Monkey wants to buy a new vine (he's a monkey...that's like an Xbox to him) but it costs too much money. He doesn't have twenty dollars! His allowance is only four! But he REALLY wants it, which means he'll have to save up for a few weeks and not spend his money on little things if he wants to buy the big thing he has his eye on. It's not easy, and he's very tempted to say forget it and just buy candy. But in the end he realizes it's worth it to save his money for something he really wants.

I love this series. It's fun, it's accessible, it's kid-friendly. Oh, and it's secular too. That may not be important to everybody, but I've come across quite a few Christian-based books about the three jars system. Those are great if they fit your religious values, but if not, it's great to have non-religious options. Besides, the John Lanza books could easily be read by Christian and non-Christian families alike.

Excellent for teaching about saving!

I teach financial education to youth and I use this book all the time with my Elementary groups. You can make a few props that go along with the story, read the story out loud (while getting the students to interact) and then do a little savings activity at the end. I like to have the kids design their own dollar bill and write on it what goal they are saving for. There are so many cute things you can do with this book. Very well written and easy for kids to understand. It makes learning about money fun!

This is a great book for encouraging kids to save money for a goal rather than spending it on little things. Great pictures and cute story. It may make your child want to save towards something.
