Demon Soul is the beginning of the Caine Brothers series. I wanted to write about a different kind of hero, one who had a hard time with the blood that ran in his veins. My demon/human/Fae tribreds are amazing men - I hope you stick around and get to know all of them.

Much Ado About Everything

Before dawn, Rose Walters wanders into a Santa Monica strip mall, broke but for the clothes on her back and shoes that her feet are bleeding in after an eight mile walk. She repeats "Gabriel Caine" silently, right up until the moment she's approached by the man himself. She's dismayed to find a man whose twice her size and can read her thoughts as if she's speaking out loud. How she is supposed to rescue him? That is what she was sent back to Earth to do. Still, Gabriel accepts there's something special about her, right after he gets over her accidentally wicking away what remains of soul.
Not only did Christine Ashworth give me what I expected--beautiful yet flawed characters, emotional baggage, sexual tension, creature battles, and catharsis--but she included something very unexpected with Gabriel's laid-back brother, Justin, and his witchy associate, Magdalena. They are, as far as I'm concerned, Benedict and Beatrice from Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." They speak in snark and are obviously falling in love as fast as they can snap back at the other's insults. Meanwhile, everyone around them sees the romance that Justin and Magdalena would swear to their graves doesn't exist. And Ms. Ashworth uses torturous restraint, using them just enough to brighten and complement Gabriel and Rose's story without becoming a distraction.
Demon Soul is a remarkably complex story for its length. Rose's back story is woven into Gabriel's current problem, which is the key to an ambitious vampire taking over her master's Los Angeles crime empire, that the Caine boys aim to put a dent into. There's also a delightful little demon named Mephisto that reminds me of Marie Sexton's Cole Fenton that I hope makes an appearance in a future Caine Brother's novel.
It's also a fun read, despite some dark subject matter. I would recommend Demon Soul and the Caine Brothers series to fans of Hildie McQueen, the TV show Angel, and Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.

Fun, Smart, Flawed Characters - Love It!

If it's paranormal than it's usually right up my alley. In the world of Demon Soul we get to explore all kinds of demons and supernatural beings, but thankfully they are not your stereotypical lot. Christine Ashworth gives them depth and interest that makes it hard for you to put the book down. At the very core our main heroes, the Cain family, are human, with human faults, needs and desires. Why do I say they are human? Because they are tribreds, a mix of human, demon and fae. Our leading lady, Rose, she's something else entirely. I love the way she takes on the fight and doesn't wait to be saved. I love girl power and Rose gives us that.
The conflicts feel real, and you care about these characters. You want to see it come to a positive resolve in the end. But when there are bull-headed males in the mix you never know which way the tide will blow.
This is an enjoyable read with smart, strong, sexy players possessing an undying determination to succeed. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Fun, sexy, and a hell of a good time!

This was one fun read -- I couldn't go to sleep until I finished it! The characters were compelling and I absolutely believed the body and soul link between Gabriel and Rose. Theirs was an intensely satisfying love in every aspect of the world. The world they lived in was richly drawn out and I wouldn't be surprised to find her graceful werewolves running Venice surreptitiously trying to keep humans unaware of the demons and vampires running amuck. Gabriel Caine's family are tribreds -- human, Feri, and demon -- and accustomed to taking care of themselves but Rose is something much, much more and only she can save Gabriel.
