Amazing book.

This book offers you an inside view of the thought process of people resorting to extreme steps to hurt themselves. It is amazing that the six human Needs and their order guide our lives.
This book is impactful as it is based on the stories of real people and how they overcame their destructive behavior. I hope more parents read this and try to understand their kids better.

Too often in literature dealing with mental health challenges do we find strategies for dealing with these issues that revolve around categorising, labelling, and treating the behaviours in question... This is NOT one of those books. Veenu and her co-authors approach this complex and sensitive topic with the respect, empathy, and understanding that it deserves. Rather than simply seeking to treat the symptom, Numb helps us all to see the bigger picture, and develops an understanding of the context that self-harm commonly occurs in, allowing us to love, support, and understand ourselves and others in a deeper and greater way.

Like the stories "It" and even "Night" that came before it, this book simply chronicles the horrific mental and physical abuse suffered by a small boy. Yet, we also get to find out what this child is thinking and feeling. For those of us who were spared this awful treatment as kids, the story is unbelievable and sadly, true. I'm glad that small boy turned out to have a happy life. Stories such as this need to be told, and this book does a great job of it.

Hired by one side in the conflict, an unexpected betrayal strikes down Ethan, and he vanishes. Kit goes on a rampage, terrorizing anyone with knowledge, to discover what happened to him, and mangled bodies accumulate as she searches for her brother. Knowing telepathically exactly what evil an individual has committed isn’t admissible in courts there, or heeded by corrupt sheriffs. However, possessing the truth is ample motivation for ignoring the law to Kit, and she summons help. In a final bloody confrontation, with deaths on both sides, a solution that only those from Kobani could produce is achieved.

Koban Universe #2

This spin-off story in the Koban Universe involves Ethan and his adopted (ripper) sister Kit as they visit a Wild West planet named Chisholm to drum up business for their new trouble-shooting firm, Have Genes, Will Travel. They and their young friends on Koban see the potential in using their Kobani skills as a way to finance sightseeing and adventures in a post-Krall galaxy. However things don't go quite as planned in the local range war and they end up needing to be rescued on their first mission. Every new business plan needs a little fine tuning in the beginning.

I really enjoy this series and can't wait for the next book by Bennett, either in the main series or this spin-off story from Koban: A Federation Forged in Fire. As usual, the blurb gives too much of the story away.

Fun Read!

I have always enjoyed every book from this author. This was another great book in a series of well written books.

I always find myself getting lost in this universe created by the author. An small escape from the reality of today's world when I let the book absorb me into this world of gene modified humans. Super humans.

Fun western type story with lots of action, turns and twists. Think Kit stole the show in this one. I am glad the Rippers played a major role in this book.

Lets be happy for "hard heads"! Read the book to find out why. Editing was solid.

Gets my recommendation to read. All the Koban books get that recommendation. Look forward to the next one. Wonder where the Genes will travel next.

Another excelent addition to the Kobani universe

Came across the Koban books last February and Stephen W Bennett quickly became one of my favorite authors. I have since purchased every book released and have yet to be disappointed.

While KU:1 was a collection of four short stories KU:2 is all one story.

I enjoyed this book (though slightly less than I expected).

Pros: Good story. At one point a 'norm' gets the best of a Kobani proving they are not infallible super-beings. The rippers get more page time as the dominant point of view further cementing their full sentience in the readers mind. Plenty of action. Though little of it is in evidence local fauna is introduced (I like to see local plant and wildlife it make the planets less generic feeling). The younger generation gets to encounter more of the galaxy out of their own space and grow as people due to it.

Cons: The main norm antagonists seem a little one dimensional while the secondaries get more page time and have much more depth. Not sure if this was fixed in a revision but at one point the foreshadowing was WAY to strong.

The first revision that was released had a few editing errors but Stephen is always quick to fix anything you report to him.

Holy Hell!!!

What did I just read. The most interesting three books in one . I stared last night slept two hours and started reading again didn't want to stop. The stories are well writen by a two person team and have to give great accomplishment to both. They are scary full of excitement you would not believe. There were times I was flabbergasted at a few scene which I totally didn't expect FAR OUT a MUST read

I was given a free copy of the is story in exchange for a honest review. The story starts off quite creepy. It grabs your attention right away. Any story involving demonic children is creepy. The middle gets a little hard to follow but when you get to the last section which is the history behind it all, it picks up and sends you on a great ride right up to the end. I recommend this to all fans of modern horror. #mistressdread

This novel has a huge well developed creep factor and is my favorite from this writing duo. It is masterfully woven and I jumped more than once just reading the beginning chapters. The story line draws you in from the beginning and the atmosphere and action continues throughout.

There was once a little princess whose father was king over a great country full of mountains and valleys. His palace was built upon one of the mountains, and was very grand and beautiful. The princess, whose name was Irene, was born there, but she was sent soon after her birth, because her mother was not very strong, to be brought up by country people in a large house, half castle, half farmhouse, on the side of another mountain, about half-way between its base and its peak.

The princess was a sweet little creature, and at the time my story begins was about eight years old, I think, but she got older very fast. Her face was fair and pretty, with eyes like two bits of night sky, each with a star dissolved in the blue. Those eyes you would have thought must have known they came from there, so often were they turned up in that direction. The ceiling of her nursery was blue, with stars in it, as like the sky as they could make it. But I doubt if ever she saw the real sky with the stars in it, for a reason which I had better mention at once.

These mountains were full of hollow places underneath; huge caverns, and winding ways, some with water running through them, and some shining with all colours of the rainbow when a light was taken in. There would not have been much known about them, had there not been mines there, great deep pits, with long galleries and passages running off from them, which had been dug to get at the ore of which the mountains were full. In the course of digging, the miners came upon many of these natural caverns. A few of them had far-off openings out on the side of a mountain, or into a ravine.

 

Eight-year-old Princess Irene lives a lonely life in a castle in a wild, desolate, mountainous kingdom, with only her nursemaid "Lootie" for company. Her father the king is normally absent, and her mother is dead. Unknown to her, the nearby mines are inhabited by a race of goblins, long banished from the kingdom and now anxious to take revenge on their human neighbors. One rainy day, the princess explores the castle and discovers a beautiful, mysterious lady, who identifies herself as Irene's namesake and great-great-grandmother. The next day, Princess Irene persuades her nursemaid to take her outside. After dark they are chased by goblins and rescued by the young miner 'Curdie', whom Irene befriends. At work with the rest of the miners, Curdie overhears the goblins talking, and their conversation reveals to Curdie the secret weakness of goblin anatomy: they have very soft, vulnerable feet. Curdie sneaks into the Great Hall of the goblin palace to eavesdrop on their general meeting, and hears that the goblins intend to flood the mine if a certain other part of their plan should fail. He later conveys this news to his father. In the palace, Princess Irene injures her hand, which her great-great-grandmother heals. A week later Irene is about to see her great-great-grandmother again, but is frightened by a long-legged cat and escapes up the mountain; whereupon the light from her great-great-grandmother's tower leads her home, where her great-great-grandmother gives Irene a ring attached to a thread invisible except to herself, which thereafter connects her constantly to home. A very enjoyable children's book.

As always with George MacDonald, everything here is more than meets the eye: this in fact is MacDonald's grace-filled vision of the world. Said to be one of J.R.R. Tolkien's childhood favorites, The Princess and the Goblin is the story of the young Princess Irene, her good friend Curdie--a minor's son--and Irene's mysterious and beautiful great great grandmother, who lives in a secret room at the top of the castle stairs. Filled with images of dungeons and goblins, mysterious fires, burning roses, and a thread so fine as to be invisible and yet--like prayer--strong enough to lead the Princess back home to her grandmother's arms, this is a story of Curdie's slow realization that sometimes, as the princess tells him, "you must believe without seeing." Simple enough for reading aloud to a child (as I've done myself more than once with my daughter), it's rich enough to repay endless delighted readings for the adult. --Doug Thorpe

But it is his stories for children that have endured the test of time. These works influenced many writers — including C.S. Lewis, who considered MacDonald his mentor, and J.R.R. Tolkien, who used MacDonald’s work as “a measuring stick” for his own writing in The Lord of the Rings.

a sense of the Holy

C.S. Lewis has written of encountering a sense of the holy while reading the works of George MacDonald. I agree with Lewis' assessment when it comes to "The Princess and the Goblin." Anyone who reads this book with profit by having done so.
First, and perhaps most importantly "The Princess and the Goblin" is a delightful story. There is a lot of the "just plain fun reading" stuff going on in this story. There is also a lot more.
MacDonald has buried a lot of treasures within the cave walls of his story. If the reader looks carefully as they follow the fates of Irene and Curdie, they will find these jewels just sitting there shining in the darkness, ready to be mined. There are nuggets of wisdom to be gained here in the dialogue, the narration, and in the overall arch of the story.
More than this, MacDonald's story features the best of what was Romantic literature and blends it with the greatest characteristics of fairy tales--then he turns convention on its head. Some examples:
-Whereas in fairy tales wisdom is associated with the old and knowledgeable, wisdom is here associated with innocence.
-While in traditional tales, it is the hero who saves the princess, here the princess must rescue the hero.
-Fans of modern fantasy may be used to Providential Guidance being related to male literary figures such as Tolkien's Gandalf, Lewis' Aslan. Here the figure is Feminine--the Grandmother.
In the process of playing off of and twisting traditional Romantic literature and fairy tales MacDonald manages to transcend both genres and create a truly original work of wonder.
I recommend the "Princess and the Goblin" most highly. Get it today. Just be careful that you don't pick up an abridgment--they tend to rip out the heart of the tale in an attempt to make the text more modern (neutered).

A classic well worth seeking out

This wonderful children's novel tells the story of eight year old Princess Irene. Cared for by her nurse Lootie, she lives in a mountain farmhouse while her father rules over the region from a mountain top castle. The local folk work as miners but are beset by the Goblins who inhabit the underground. Irene is saved from the Goblins by Curdie, a thirteen year old miner, and she in turn saves him. The whole thing is told in a pleasant conversational style and is filled with humor, word games, magic, derring-do, and pure wonderment.
George MacDonald, a Congregational minister turned novelist, who seems nearly forgotten now, was one of the seminal figures in the development of Fantasy. His influence on other Fantasy authors is obvious, he was a childhood favorite of JRR Tolkein, who especially liked this book, and C.S. Lewis named him one of his favorite authors. His own stories draw on many of the themes and characters of classical European fairy tales. But where they were often merely horrific and meaningless, MacDonald adds a layer of Christian allegory. Thus, Irene and Curdie are eventually saved by a thread so slender that you can't even see it, but which leads them back to safety, teaching Curdie that you sometimes have to believe in things that you can't see.
The book would be interesting simply as a touchstone of modern fiction, but it stands up well on its own and will delight adults and children alike.

Dover Edition is not Unabridged, as marked on cover

I have two copies of this wonderful book in front of me...the Dover Juvenile Classics edition and the beautiful hardcover by Macmillan. Not only does the Dover edition omit all the sweet pictures, but right from the very first page it omits a sweet exchange between "Mr. Author" and an unnamed interlocutor--reminiscent of the story interruptions by the "real" Christopher Robin and the narrator of the Pooh stories. If something has obviously been cut out right from the first page, I'd bet other passages have been cut out, too. Perhaps this is unabridged from some version of the story, but it is definitely not the most complete text available. Stick to the hardcover or deluxe versions of the text for the real thing.

George MacDonald was a Scottish author and minister best known for his fairy tales and fantasy novels. A theologian, MacDonald was pastor of Trinity Congregational Church in Arundel before moving to London to teach at the University of London. MacDonald s work influenced many fantasy writers including J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Madeleine L Engle; he is recognized as a mentor to Lewis Carroll and heavily influenced Carroll s decision to submit Alice s Adventures in Wonderland for publication. MacDonald was a prolific writer, and penned such fantasy classics as Phantastes, The Princess and the Goblin, and Lillith. George MacDonald died in 1905.

Entering into the Realms of Faerie

I have not written any reviews before but I felt that the works of George MacDonald deserved reviews to bring the works of this forgotten genius back to the light of day. Especially as you can get many of them for free on your kindle. It must first be understood that George MacDonald inspired such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien, W.H. Auden, Madeline L'Engle and E. Nesbit. C.S. Lewis regarded him as his master. "Picking up a copy of Phantastes one day at a train-station bookstall, I began to read. A few hours later," said Lewis, "I knew that I had crossed a great frontier." If you are a fan of these authors then you might want to seriously consider exploring the works of one who inspired them.

Before I fully get into this review I want to say that you can download this great book from the Gutenberg Project for free instead of paying the fee that Amazon charges here. Call me cheap but I like the zero price tag which I feel is appropriate for most books whose copyright has expired.

This is an awesome piece of work. Reading it I felt as if I had been placed into a trance and transported into the realms of Faerie. The protagonist wanders from place to place and through adventure through adventure in a manner that is seemingly aimless at first glance. Such an aimlessness though to me gives an illustration of how Faerie must feel and in truth such meanderings are rarely without purpose they are just rarely obvious. Upon reflection you will see that there is a purpose to the journey of the protagonist though even he may not realize it until the very end. The realms he wanders through are beautiful and terrible. The entire work stirs ones imagination. In this work more than any other I can see how and where MacDonald influenced Lewis and Tolkien. I would describe this work as dreamlike and magical.

The only dislikes I have is that MacDonald often goes on and on for many pages with song and poetry. While I like songs and poetry the ones he uses did not hold my attention or interest. However this may not be the case for everyone. Like all of this authors works there are messages of morals, vices and virtues. As he was a Minister you should not be surprised that there is an underlying message in keeping with his religion. Some may not care for this but for me I find the authors touch with such things light and not unpleasant in the least. His philosophies seem to me to be quite deep and worthy of reflection regardless of your own religious beliefs.

Altogether I found this book to not just be a great read but a trip into the Dreamlike realms of Faerie. In the future I shall use this book as my key to journey there again and be inspired by a true master in every since of the word.

We do live in an amazing time. Whatever we might be interested in can be researched and investigated immediately. This allows our knowledge base to grow steadily with exploration. It is surprising to think about the number of times I find myself headed to the computer so I can “Google” something. When I was a Reading Specialist parents would always ask what they could do to help their child do better in reading. It seemed like they were expecting some highly technical suggestion and seemed surprised when my answer was…read WITH them - not just TO them. Plus, I would add to parents, have them share in the reading- it should be an interactive experience. Be very sure that it is not just mom that does the reading- everyone around can join in.
And, it doesn’t matter what you read because you mainly want them to hear your voices and when the pregnancy is further along they will. You have nine months plus birth to five to make a difference for your child, so make the most of those BS years. I know that these behaviors will have an impact as I experienced it over my thirty years of teaching.
Now, you will need to determine what you want the next steps to be to prepare your child’s educational foundation. This is your time to create the ultimate learning environment and make a difference for the success of your child’s school career. Get to know your child’s learning style because this will make her progress easier and learning more meaningful. I am a visual learner, some of us are auditory, other’s are tactile. Success in reading changes everything in the life of a child

I thought I would just read the first chapter of the sample I sent for. I read the whole sample in one sitting. I am looking forward to reading the whole book. The author has obviously worked hard to understand and find a process to help children with a variety of needs.
