In this delightfully light hearted book Rob Roy Herzog, a retired intelligence officer, presents a collection of interesting, intriguing, unusual, and often humorous stories gathered in the course of a varied life. He grew up in a very small town in Kentucky in the years before television, went to 12 years of school with mostly the same kids, took his gun to school more than once without causing comment, and then joined the US Navy to serve on five different aircraft carriers during the early years of the Vietnam War. As part of his naval service he traveled to Australia, where he met his future wife, Daphne. Following his discharge he returned to Australia to marry, settled in Townsville, on Australia's north eastern tropical coast, and slowly became an Aussie, with a few missteps along the way. He prospected in the bush for copper and gold, delivered the mail, and had a variety of public service jobs. In 1981 he moved his family to Australia's national capital, Canberra, to take up a position in the Australian Intelligence Community. For over two decades he analyzed satellite imagery and monitored ballistic missile programs during the final years of the Cold War. Then he became a political/military analyst studying events in South Asia, sometimes dabbling in matters in Africa and the Middle East. So he has many interesting tales to tell but does not take either himself or life in general too seriously.

About the Author
Rob Roy Herzog remembers the first book he ever read, over 60 years ago. It was a science fiction novel and he has loved SF ever since. He grew up in Hawesville, Kentucky, served in the US Navy, and in 1966 migrated to Australia. There he married and settled down, first in tropical Townsville, Queensland, then in the national capital, Canberra. Now a retired intelligence analyst he plans to produce at least two more volumes in the Yestermorrow adventure. His first book, G'day Y'all, is a collection of humorous and interesting yarns gleaned from an interesting life time.

Quirky whimsy

Whimsical Wanderings and Wonderings
from Kentucky to Australia.

Rob Roy Herzog shares his whimsical wandering and wondering tales in this unusual book which relates an extraordinary career by an ordinary man. He grew up in a small town, Hawesville, Kentucky, joined the US Navy and served on five different aircraft carriers during the Vietnam War, prospected in the Australian bush, and enjoyed over 20 years as an intelligence analyst. No-where does it seek to attract renown for what the author has done. It is well written and, considering the breadth and nature of the content, is surprisingly entertaining. A great read for the casually interested; a very informative one for those who have walked similar paths or who contemplate them for the future.
The book opens with an unusual account of life in a very small town, Hawesville, with just two streets. It has hills as a backdrop and the Ohio River out front. The population of Hawesville was replete with characters such as could be found in many small communities in the early post WWII era. There's a movie theatre owner/enthusiast (Rob's dad); a storekeeper, a cheery petrol station owner; a grandmother with rare skill at beheading chickens, and a telephone operator who knew everybody's number and would track down anyone not at their home phone when they had a call.
Like so many small town youths of his day, Rob Roy joined the US Navy for a chance of adventure and foreign travel. All readers with any military experience will identify with his navy tales. Military service can be powerfully mundane but Rob found it to be humorous at times. He regarded his service as both a patriotic duty and a small price for seeing a slice of the world far beyond the horizons of Hawesville. Rob trained as a photo interpreter, or imagery analyst as they are now called. This rare skill set comes back into his stories much later in his life.
But part of his navy experience involved a visit to Townsville in 1964, an event which opened new chapters in his life. Although he greatly enjoyed Townsville's hospitality and tropical atmosphere his later decision to abandon Kentucky's blue grass for that small tropical city was due to a woman. She was Daphne, destined to be his wife for over 40 years.
Any American migrating to Australia would have interesting experiences but it was his attraction to Townsville almost as much as to his new wife that provides the introduction to the next phase in Rob's life. Married and, in time, with three children, life was full of new horizons. Work opportunities were extremely varied but one, as Divisional Clerk for the Australian Electoral Office, provided a strong introduction to Australia. The November 1975 dismissal of a Prime Minster was an event well know to all Australians but American readers may be surprised to hear that it was very similar in drama and almost as divisive and politically bone rattling as was Watergate and the fate of President Richard Nixon. Herzog had joined the local electoral office just in time for this momentous event.
He got to understand the structure and workings of Australian government very quickly and learned as much about local politics and political culture as another immigrant might learn in decades.
Years later Rob Roy obtained a posting to Canberra as an imagery analyst with the Joint Intelligence Organisation. This part of his book describes many aspects of the intelligence community and is an excellent and very readable introduction for anyone interested in the field.
The discussion in these chapters center on the final years of the Cold War, ballistic missile programs, and eventually, when he was an all source analyst, political/military events on the Sub Continent. He has high praise for some of our national agencies and for the quality of other national services. But he also reports that occasionally they have made serious errors, often driven by expectations of managers and governments, as distinct from errors at the coal-face. Australians might be proud to find excellence here as well but over all his commentary on our intelligence services is food for thought.
G'day Y'all is a somewhat quirky but very informative and entertaining account of one man's life and service.
