Many years back, a husband and wife realized that life in the big city was no longer for them. Without actually realizing it, work had become their primary focus and family had drifted into the background. It was time for a change, and time to put family first once again. They picked up roots and moved from Chicago to Towne, a small hamlet of 1,600 souls in mid-state Illinois. Life there had remained pretty much unchanged since shortly after the town was founded in 1866 by Civil War veteran Nathan Towne. Tom Gillian, his wife Julia and their children Juliet seven, Tom Jr. five and Victoria three and Greta, the family’s German Shepard, arrived in Towne just in time to greet spring.
Born Thomas Robert Gillian, Tom had graduated from the University of Illinois and was highly recruited by a prominent accounting firm in Chicago’s business district. As was expected of him, Tom almost immediately became successful and rose in the company’s ranks.
His wife Julia’s first love was working with younger students to improve their learning skills and scholastic success. Since early childhood, it had been her dream to enter the teaching profession once she graduated from college. With her teaching credentials in hand, she became an enthusiastic and gifted teacher whose students loved her and excelled in every way.
The couple had found themselves eager to start a new, simpler life. They wanted and needed less distractions in their lives. Tom and Julia decided to refocus on the family and a marriage that had begun to take a back seat to their careers in Chicago’s metropolitan environment. After discovering Towne, Tom began the process by designing and building a house. They wanted it to remind them of a picture perfect small town home, complete with a full porch wrapping itself nearly all the way around the house. It would be a magnificent home for the family to begin life anew. Nothing could have prepared them for the events that would shape their lives in ways they could never imagine.
