RG3 - like you have seen him before

As I try to do with all my reviews, let me begin this one by giving full disclosure. I love the Washington Redskins. When they drafted RG3 I rejoiced. I read the articles and listened to the debates about how a running quarterback would never win long term in the NFL. I didn't care. For a fan base long starved of meaningful football, the kid out of Baylor brought hope that we hadn't felt in a long time.
When I read Ted Kluck's book, I came away with a sense of enjoyment as I got to relive the rookie's first NFL season. But I also felt a bit of a let down. I didn't feel the book contributed anything to my understanding of who Robert Griffin III was. I had read most of the articles cited, watched most of the games, and heard most of the debates about Griffin's chances in the NFL. I picked up the book hoping to get an inside glimpse into the faith of this young athlete, but was disappointed.
There was a reference to the importance of faith in his life, and a short section on Griffin's church choice while at college (as well as the fact that he grew up attending charismatic leaning churches), but very little about Griffin's personal faith. Baylor is a Christian school only in the most generous sense of the term, and growing up in a home in which faith is important can mean just about anything, especially as Kluck records Griffin uttering an expletive during a game. Is Griffin a born-again Christian? That question, really the only one that counts in this life, goes unanswered in the book.
So, while it is a very interesting and fairly well written account of RG3's first year in the NFL, the book fails to deliver in a key area for a work targeted towards a Christian audience by a Christian publisher.
I give Robert Griffin III: Athlete, Leader, Believer 4 out of 5 stars.

Not Much To It

I was disappointed with Ted Kluck's biography of Robert Griffin III. It is a Thomas Nelson book, sold in Christian bookstores, and is sub-titled "Athlete. Leader. Believer." But there was very little Christian content in the book, and the author seemingly praises RG3 for keeping his faith to himself (calling him "a refreshing change from the nonstop evangelism of the Tebow brand"), and the book even contained a curse word.*
I chose this book as a football fan who knows little about RG3 as a person, and after reading it I still know little about the person. It became evident that the author has never spoken to the quarterback, which leaves a biography like this lacking. When talking about Griffin's decision to play football at Baylor, he says, "We may never know why he chose Baylor."
I'd bet that we could know if someone asked him. I'd also bet that this information is available if the author did some looking. It's hard to believe that he would never be asked about how he chose to attend the university that he did.
Beyond that, the writing style was very hard to follow. Awkwardly writing in the present tense when covering past events, Kluck jumped from one topic to another quickly and abruptly. His constant subject changes made me scratch my head and re-read pages trying to figure out what he was talking about.
This was still an interesting read, but if you are looking for a biography about the life of Robert Griffin III you might want to try something else. This book covered his rookie season in detail, but the rest of the book was the author's opinions about dozens of other players.
*The word was hell used as a curse, and was a quote from a doctor.

Disappointed

I purchased the book based on a title that led me to believe it was about how RG3 got to where he is. Instead I read a play by play of games I saw last season . Lots of stats, nothing about what makes him a leader and nothing about how his faith works for him as an athlete.
