In this eye opening, easy-to-follow, action-oriented book, Jason Runkel Sperling explains how to use screen-free, unstructured outdoor play and toys to increase early-age child learning opportunities and improve happiness for the whole family. You’ll learn: • How to encourage your child to enjoy active, outdoor, screen-free play • How to foster unstructured, child-led playtime • The secret to making risky play work for your child • Practical advice on how to pick the right toys and transform your backyard • How to set up your backyard playspace and not break the bank • And much, much more… Follow one father’s entertaining and informative experiments to find play and toys that inspire his children to play outside, offline, and independently—like children of past generations. Author Jason Runkel Sperling shares his six-year journey discovering the history of play, playgrounds, toys, and the role of adults in their children’s experiences, culminating in a revolutionary approach to backyard play. Full of humor, parenting insight, and in-depth research, Sperling’s book will change how you think about raising children, and how you organize your home. If you’re like the majority of parents today, you may have noticed the differences in modern childhood. Unlike every other generation, your children spend more time indoors, glued to screens, and are less active and free to roam than in any time in history. You likely have come across countless articles on the epidemic of child obesity and behavioral problems today, and perhaps you’ve heard that getting children to play outside is an easy and inexpensive remedy. You may already want to get your children to play outside, but nothing seems to motivate them. Or maybe you’re frozen with fear that they might get hurt if they go out. Plus, your backyard is manicured for adult enjoyment. So instead of heading outside, your children stay indoors, damaging their health, and driving you up the walls. You may have tried lawn games, sports equipment, remote control toys, or backyard arts and crafts, but nothing seems to hold their attention. And when you do spend time in the backyard, you always have to play with them. Or, perhaps you can’t stand the thought of your children not getting ahead—so the children’s schedule is jam-packed with adult-led, goal-based activities outside the home. In other words, you’ve turned into the family chauffeur. Whatever happened to “go outside and play”? Raising children today is harder than ever before, but children haven’t changed all that much. The best way to get children to develop their imagination and creativity, motor and sensory skills, emotional and social intelligence, and every other physical and mental ability, is to get them to “go outside and play” with open-ended, child-led play that can be enjoyed in the backyard. There are proven, evidence-based approaches for the role parents should take in facilitating this kind of play. And you can learn them quickly and apply them tomorrow. This doesn’t mean getting rid of every after-school activity, throwing away every toy in the house, or putting the kibosh on screen time forever. But it does mean making sure that children have active playtime necessary to prevent physical and psychological maladies. It’s vital, especially with early-age children, to give them the environment and support they need to develop. You don’t have to play with children every second, you just need to know the right kind of play and toys to provide and how to gently guide them. The Backyard Play Revolution is for parents from every background, regardless of location or income level, and is appropriate for backyards of any size. This book isn’t hundreds of pages long. You can read the whole thing the day you get it and take action the next day. Are you ready to profoundly impact your child’s life? A great way to let your kids be....well, kids! Love this book!!!
By Mommy of 4
As a stay at home mommy of 3 kiddos ages 2, 3, and 5, I'm always looking for ways to keep my littles entertained without screens! In my opinion, outdoors is the best place for preschoolers and elementary aged kiddos to practice and master emerging physical skills. It's here that kids can freely experience motor skills like running, galloping, hopping, leaping, and jumping....without destroying my home ;). They can even scream at the top of their lungs without making my head spin 360 degrees! As a health and exercise major, I believe there's no greater benefit for mental and physical health than exercise!
It's important to note, though, that outdoor play has far greater benefits than just physical exercise - Cognitive and social/emotional development are impacted, too. My girls do such a fabulous job of inventing games, communicating with peers, and problem solving. I'm not sure about your kiddos, but mine are absolutely not allowed to come tattle or whine about every small thing they find annoying. Let's be honest, I don't care to hear you whine about the way your sister looked at you. Really? Control your female emotions and figure it out (and I do mean that in the most loving way). I'm pretty amazed at how well my 3 and 5 year old have found effective ways to communicate and solve their petty issues while outdoors (even with neighbors). As for my 2 year old, she doesn't necessarily play with her siblings, but she's engaged, learning, and taking in God's beautiful creation. Sometimes that means she's picking up worms, bugs, and other really gross things. I thought those are things boys do, not girls?
Although I encourage them to get creative and make up games, sometimes they do need a little help (and I do, too). Jason Runkel Sperling's book has been such a wonderful addition for the days I just can't seem to think of something fun, creative, and different to do. All of his suggestions/ideas aren't like any others you'll find in books out there. Jason does a fabulous job thinking out of the box and makes connecting with nature exciting!
I'm a huge fan of most of the activities, but my girlies are obsessed with his mud play ideas. Messy fun? Absolutely! Bad for my OCD? Yep! Is it worth it? Oh yes!! This is where I've learned to drop all rules (well, except for entering my house a muddy mess) and allow our kids to be...well, kids! All 3 of my kiddos have absolutely loved "cooking" my favorite foods with their homemade mud. My older two requested measuring cups so they could properly measure the necessary ingredients...and they've recently started making mud plates to serve their food on. Genius! My 2 year old can't even resist this one! This activity alone has helped her with transferring skills, mixing, and molding! It just doesn't get much better than this! Just be ready to strip everyone down once they're done :). We're all excited about trying the water play activities in the summer. I'm pretty sure they'll never want to come inside and frankly...I'm ok with that!
Overall, this is a fabulously written book that helps both mom and child get seriously creative! I'd love to have a part 2 :).

Essential Book for Parents- Best Loose Parts Outdoor Play Guide
By ladyalexander
Tomorrow is Cyber Monday, and my daughter is 9 years old. If you have a small kid like I do, you know the drill: life is a constant, expensive, and wasteful conveyer belt of very use-specific plastic toys that they want very badly, until they get it, at which point its appeal decays exponentially. They are not old enough to see this pattern but we are, and it's enough to make a person cynical. Jason Sperling has written his second book on the importance of outdoor play, and once again it is aimed at getting you, the parent or caregiver, thinking differently about how your child needs to play and how simple (and CHEAP) it will be to make that happen for them.
I really love that Sperling has been writing his books as he's been raising his own two young children, using his experiences with them as part of the stories he tells. He is totally in this soup as he mixes it, and is invested 100%. There was the endearing account of him buying vinyl gutters and PVC pipes at Home Depot for several dollars and hilariously wondering if he was actually buying this stuff as toys for his children and PUTTING THEM IN HIS BACKYARD, and would they even play with it? In fact they did, and engineered simple but delightful child-designs...without any help or direction. As far as I know, they are just regular kids, not MIT-bound...makes me want to give my daughter gutters too! Merry Christmas, sweetie! ;)
There is so much in here worth discussing, such as the concept of Loose Parts, risky play (Sperling does an excellent job of providing parameters for a backyard which introduces important risk situations for children to navigate while eliminating dangerous elements, a section of the book I found particularly illuminating and helpful), and the role of Playworker. Every parent can use this book. It will shine a light on how your child plays, and how you can provide them with what they need to play- for a few dollars, or for the time it takes to forage in your yard.

Great book - and I've never said that about a self-published book
By It's Just Me
So - first a few notes: 1) I usually can't stand self-published books. 2) I usually don't buy them. 3) I know nothing about this author or if he has a blog or whatnot, so I'm not a biased reviewer.
That being said, the author had the genius idea of publishing one of his books (the mud kitchen one) and putting it out there on kindle for free. I read that one just after I had set up a basic mud kitchen in the yard for my son and was googling the benefits of mud kitchens. I downloaded that book rather skeptically, expecting the usual poor grammar, typos, etc. I was pleased to find that this guy could actually write coherently and I read that whole book in a few minutes. My point in this is that if you aren't sure whether you want to purchase his books, you can go check out the mud kitchen book for free. Yay!
I bought the paper version of this book as I am not a fan of non-fiction on Kindle (I like to flip back and forth). The actual quality of the book was nice - it is 118 pages of text but the font is quite large, so you can probably read it all in an afternoon.
The content is wonderful, although I felt the organization at the beginning as a bit scattered (but not enough for it to detract from the information). Sperling explains the benefits of play; cites some studies, theory, and sites; and goes into the types of loose parts he rotates into his kids' yard. He explains how the loose parts can be used and tells stories of how his children use the parts as they play. He explains why children are actually safer with loose parts than they are on a playground, why they play for longer periods of time with loose parts, and how he came to letting his kids use loose parts in their previously perfectly-manicured lawn.
One of my favorite parts of the book is the part on becoming a Play Worker (a play facilitator). The jobs include setting out loose parts to intrigue the children, giving them some sort of play provocations if needed, and being a character in their play if they ask. I liked that he pointed out that the parents should not be directing the child's play or helping them too much.
Another thing I liked about the book is that it focuses on backyards. He acknowledges that our kids can't go out and roam freely as we did when we were kids and that there aren't woods and rivers a wooded play areas left in many areas for kids to explore. In order to make up for this, he bring the exciting stuff to his own yard - mud, sticks, tires, buckets, and ropes. My yard looks like a junk yard, so I know I'm doing it right! Thank goodness for the 6" stockade fence...
All in all, this is mostly stuff I already knew but that I like to read about because it makes me feel validated and as thought I'm doing something right! ;0) My son is an only child, and I often feel like I should entertain him more. The mud kitchen I set up in three minutes kept him interested for five hours just the first day, and he still plays in it when the fancy strikes him. He's two and a half. He loves loose parts and playing outside. He also like watching Umi Zumi and Paw Patrol. Whatever. Win some, lose some.
This is a wonderful book and is even more impressive in that it was self-published and still makes sense. There are a very few typos along the way (going to a "lumbar yard" made me laugh a little), but I make typos regularly (who doesn't) and I was able to read the book and not be horrified. Seriously... this is the only self-published book I've ever bought in a paper version where the price wasn't free.
So there you have it. Good book. I wish his kids could play with my son. They'd stay busy till next year.
