Lynne Murray grew up in transit. She was born in Illinois, but her father's work as a scientist working for the military took her to Texas, Alaska, Washington state, and finally Southern California. She now lives in San Francisco.She has written and directed a play, written dozens of articles for Buddhist publications and contributed humorous short pieces and interviews to both online and print magazines. When we last saw Val-Sybilla at the end of Gravitas: Valkyrie in the Forbidden Zone, she
had found her lost husband, Josu and they had barely escaped with their lives from the forbidden
zone, planet Earth; an escape facilitated by a mysterious and not completely trustworthy
individual called “Feeney” who had used a mutual aid agreement he held with the Furies and the
Sirens to ensure their escape from Earth.
Now, the Furies want payment for the lives of Sybil and Josu, and collecting from Feeney
won’t satisfy them. Immediately upon returning to Planet Valkyrie, Senior Clan Mother Val-
Isvenlena dispatches Val-Sybilla and Josu to Planet Fury to placate the Furies. Fury is a planet
ruled by women as is Valkyrie, but it is bathed in Wroth, a warlike anger pheromone with effects
directly opposite the Valkyrie’s abundant sensual sex pheromone, Gravitas. Wroth has ensured a
social system on Fury ruled by assassination and minor issues such as personal disagreements
and political successions are decided by fights to the death. Val-Isvenlena secretly hopes the
Furies will kill Val-Sybilla and Josu ridding her of a sticky social problem. However, the Furies
need a communication method that can’t be intercepted and they are hoping that Val-Sybilla will
be able to find a Furious equivalent to the Valkyrian mental demons used to extract information
from the There/Not there. Thus the stage is set, for Sybil and Josu, in fear of their lives, to do the
bidding of the Furies in payment for their escape from Earth, while Val-Isvenlena plots to rid
herself of Val-Sybilla and Josu and award Sybil’s estate to her whining sister Cariya.
Valkyrie on Planet Fury is narrated by Sybil in the first person. Based upon Greek and
Norse mythological archetypes, the story calls upon characters who are menacing in both violent
and not violent ways. It contrasts a social system, based on deviousness and social custom
(Valkyrie) with the social system on Fury, based on mortal combat. Heroes arise throughout the
story; Hesiod risks his life and his military career by taking independent action to save Sybil and
Josu from a plot in which they are suspected of murdering Megaera, one of the three Furies.
Ellya, Pandora and Cassiopia unexpectedly arise as heroes when the weakest among the citizen’s
of Fury prove to possess the communications secret the Furies crave. Finally, thanks to Sybil’s
negotiating skills, a confrontation spurred by Gravitas with Medusa results in an unexpected
resolution that once again spares their lives.
Valkyrie on Planet Fury proved to be entertaining and well worth reading for anyone with
an interest in science fiction, fantasy, human relations or even just an interest in a good
entertaining story. Yes, it’s a little far out for some readers, but in the end the real story is about
men and women, their needs and goals, and what methods they are willing to use to obtain them.
Beyond that, it’s about sex…what’s not to like?

A delightful return to a universe with Gravitas -- and lots of strong, sexy women

It was a delight to re-enter the universe of Sybilla, heroine of Gravitas: Valkyrie in the Forbidden Zone, the first novel in what I hope will be a lengthy series by Lynne Murray. (If you haven't read Gravitas, I recommend reading it first, and then get the free short story, Valkyrie in the Demon Realm, which takes place just after Gravitas ends. Both Gravitas and Valkyrie in the Demon Realm are available as Kindle ebooks.) Murray's universe is populated by species whose long-ago visits to Earth resulted in their being deified and inculcated into mythology and religion. Sybilla is from the planet Valkyrie, whose abundantly fleshed females secrete an addictive pheromone, Gravitas, that is highly prized as an aphrodisiac. Valkyrian women take multiple husbands to help them balance the Gravitas. Their cousin planet, Fury, is another matriarchal society -- but the women of Fury secrete not Gravitas, but Wroth. During Sybilla's mission to Fury she encounters the Sirens and Medusa, continues to interact with her Demon spirit guides (who have a penchant for presenting themselves in her visions in droll costumes and mimicking Hollywood stars), and discovers some young girls with abilities unusual -- but potentially valuable -- to Fury. Meanwhile, back on the ranch -- err, Valkyrie -- her sister plots to replace her as head of the family estate, the Valkyrian leaders frown on Sybilla's "addiction" to her first husband, and Sybilla must hide her shocking preference for monogamy. Valkyrie on Planet Fury is a fun read, and I am looking forward to the next book!

A Thoroughly Good Read!

This was a whole new world in genre for me and it was in the literary sense, too. Murray had created not only a new world, but new planets, which are described in detail. A detail that gave me thorough picture of what she had painted with words. I could envisage it perfectly and on many occasions, I felt I was there, too.
I particularly like the 'sirens' and that birds lived in their hair. There was also The Furies, a fearsome race who had something entirely different in their hair. Think Medusa, in fact Medusa is in the story, and I loved the fact there was a little surprise for the reader there.
The most interesting thing was the complete role reversal. The women were the more dominant characters and they were the ones that looked after their men. Men being the operative word as they could have many husbands as they wished, and some had as many as ten. They were the keeper of the houses and ran the estates.
Told in the first person by Sybil, her view of her world as the 'bread winner' was fascinating. She visited the planet of the Furies and meets the Godmothers, who are similar to Queens and sat on thrones. Her mission was to find children who could communicate between the planets. And like any mission it is fraught with danger.
I thoroughly enjoyed being immersed in this and I applaud Murray for bringing it to life in the way she has.
