unconditional love, and miracles

Searched the World Over for Elie is an engaging story of international adoption, self-discovery, unconditional love, and miracles. Olsen describes how the Haiti earthquake of 2010 jarred her middle-class American family to action, an endeavor which ultimately led them to international adoption. Yet, this book is not a simple story of one family's adoption experience. It is a deeply personal narrative told through the author's unapologetically LDS socio-cultural viewpoint. Olsen's prose maintains the power to bring the sights, sounds, and smells of Kinshasa to the reader, while delicately articulating the most delicate emotions. She sprinkles in samples of her own original poetry throughout the story, and each poem is an artistic gem woven seamlessly into the author's journey. This book is a must read for anyone considering international adoption. It is honest and inspiring, leaving the reader cheering for Elie and marveling at the enormity of this family's sacrifice. It is also a must read for the family and friends of those who have or will adopt internationally. Olsen gives the readers unprecedented access to the vast range of emotions, trials, and joys of her family's adoption process--an invaluable contribution to adoptive families and their support networks.

You don't have to be interested in adoption to love this story!

I have no connection to the author and no close connection to or interest in adoption. So I was greatly surprised at how immediately captivated I was by this story. I read the downloaded sample just in idle curiosity and then purchased the whole and read through the middle of the night, something I haven't done in years. I had MANY "more important," more relevant things to do but couldn't bring myself to put it down until I had read right through the final pages, including the notes. The writing has minor imperfections and repetitions (like introducing Julia multiple times to the reader) because the book grew out of a blog over 18 months of waiting. But these only serve to heighten the sense of honesty and authenticity and real-time thinking as you follow the Olsen's experience. This is a beautiful testimony, well written and well told, that God cares about people individually in a hundred ways. Kudos and thanks to Ms. Olsen and to eLectio Publishing for finding this unforgettable, inspiring story! I'll be thinking about it for years to come.

A story full of hope

This book is inspiring for everyone, but especially helpful for those involved in the adoption process. Besides many practical hints and suggestions about international adoption, the author shares her own frank and honest thoughts and experiences. Through her emotional and spiritual journey she gives her readers an opportunity to ponder the goodness of life and of others. Elie becomes a treasured gift to all of us.
