A relationship book for ALL people

This book was right on time for me. I am planning to get married and this book gave insight on how to stay committed, the importance of being equally yolked, always evaluating my relationship, and so much more. I enjoyed the real life applications and examples in relationship to God's Word. I also look forward to discussing the questions with my fiance after he finishes reading it. Great New Spin Off!!!

If you have read the Leigh series then you will definitely know who Gertie is but you do not have to read that series to read this book. But you should because they were amazing!! You will love all of the characters in this book but Gertie just steals the show. Gertie is a witch who has been frozen for over a century and is trying to catch up on modern day life. The things that come out of her mouth are so funny. My favorite was when she went to psychiatrist for bc pills. I would definitely suggest this book and the series for your summer reading!

A Shelter for paranormal creatures.

Welcome to the plantation that is a shelter for paranormal creatures. Gertie has finally found her place and her passion, the only thing missing is her boyfriend Brad. She is trying to put together a plot to get him to move in with her. There are many funny moments in this story that you won't stop laughing at some of the antics. There are also some steamy moments with her boyfriend. If you want a read with steaminess, humor, magic gone wrong and some strange characters then this is the read for you.

Just like the "Leigh" books, the usual characters are together to support Gertie in her adventures. There are funny scenes, sweet scenes, and scary scenes. Melanie James has another hit on her resume. I just love her story telling. Looking forward to more stories from her. Great job, Melanie.

This book is a "Go-To" guide for those who are in the midst of crisis from an affair, dealing with decisions after the affair, or are in the middle of decision making on longterm choices as well as those who want to affair-proof their marriages!

I have know countless people who have dealt with this issue, but because we tend to stay quiet and we tend to protect spouses and keep up appearances up, support is hard to come by for those in this crisis. She provides much needed support, especially for those who don't know where to turn next, or who to turn to. Someone who can relate to your situation

Unfortunately infidelity is too common. I know the author personally and have several friends who have gone through the same experiences. I've spent hours talking with them but it's difficult to comprehend what they are going through and what kind of support they need. I think this book does several things I couldn't. First it shares a similar experience with the reader. Next it shares the stages of feelings associated with the experience and lastly it helps with the steps of recovery. Probably one of the hardest parts is letting others know so you can get the support you need. Reading this book will give you anonymous help until you are ready to take that step.

Extraordinary

Cathy and I have a few things in common. She's from Goole which is not far away from Gainsborough, where I live. Her Dad is Irish, so is my Mum. She went to college in Scunthorpe and she works for a charity, I worked for a charity running a project in Scunthorpe - teaching literacy skills to young offenders. There are other things too, memories of Pink Floyd lyrics, smoking and drinking under-age, village pubs and lock-ins, loving books and reading. Another major, stand-out thing ... brothers.

I have a brother. Cathy had a brother.

The Last Acts of Love is a memoir, it's a book that is written with such searing honesty that I cried twice before I reached page 40. I cried for Cathy, and I cried for her brother Matty. I cried because she talked about how close they were and how much she loved him, I cried because I tried to imagine how she felt, and it hurt.

Cathy and her brother Matty were so close, only a year apart in age, they were not just siblings, they were friends. They enjoyed the same things, they shared a sense of humour, they came from a good, hard working family. Matty was just sixteen when he was mown down by a car as he walked home with friends. Cathy prayed to a God that she didn't believe in, she prayed that he would live. He did live, he lived for eight long years. Those eight long years taught Cathy and her parents that it is possible to grieve for someone who is alive.

This could have so easily been a story of misery and sentiment, but it isn't. Cathy Rentzenbrink is an extraordinarily talented writer. Her writing is honest, and breathtaking, and touching and incredibly moving, yet it is not in the least bit dramatic or self-pitying. Cathy doesn't gloss over the facts, or try to hide her feelings and is quite brutal with herself at times.

Writing The Last Acts of Love must have been difficult for Cathy Rentzenbrink, yet she has bravely shared her story, and her brother. Her courageous decision to open up her heart and her wounds will become a lasting legacy to her brother Matty, she brings his spirit and personality to life within the pages.

This is a fine memoir, but perhaps a bit over-praised

This is a fine memoir, but perhaps a bit over-praised.

Certainly it opens a window on a unique experience, dealing with a family member in a PVS, but I felt the book had two serious flaws. Firstly, the book is very much in keeping with a lot of recent memoirs in that the author (who admits as much near the end of the book) sees herself as a victim in this situation, and while I sympathise with her and her great love for her sibling, the real victims are both Matty and her parents who are the heroes of this story. This victimhood status is all too common in current literature, and the consistent focus on the self becomes a bit wearing at times. Given the support the family received plus the staggering effort of her parents and the fact that the author could escape the situation at any time (to college etc.), I felt that despite the constant undertone of self pity, she still had a full life (wonderful parents, a marriage, second relationship, a son, lots of friends and travel etc. etc.) none of which made her happy.

A second and more serious flaw is the long drawn out finale comprising about 20% of the book after the death of her brother. The details of meeting someone studying PVS and it's impact was very interesting, but it is surrounded by masses of introspection and reflection all of which unbalances the book as it's emotional high point is around the decision to let Matty go and the consequences of that decision.

A fair and honest account overall but recommended with reservations.

Incidentally, Henry Marsh and his memoir 'Do No Harm' is referenced a couple of times, I recommend anyone with an interest in brain injuries/diseases read his superb book.

This was an amazing read. Tragic, utterly heartbreaking but with some areas of (somewhat dark) comedy as well as insightful and thought provoking - ultimately inspirational and heart warming, however. I just finished it and can see myself reading it again, which is unlike me (particularly for this kind of book.) Just can't stop thinking about it.

About the Author
My love for children and teenagers began when I was a teacher, but I felt I could make a bigger difference with teens and their families by becoming a counselor. For over 25 years as a Marriage Family Therapist, I have helped teens and their families overcome the roadblocks and misunderstandings that get in the way of their happiness and closeness. I have written this book for parents and guardians who struggle with the changes they see in their teenager and feel helpless to know how to deal with them. I want adults to be empowered; to have strategies and tools for communication as their child enters this phase of his/her life. My other passion is the trainings I conduct with therapists internationally. I help them use the therapeutic techniques that I have developed to help understand children and adolescents more deeply. I have specialized with working with children and adolescents in areas of trauma, abuse, anger issues, learning disabilities, ADD and ADHD in my private practice in Southern California.

While I'm not a mother, I was a child and I can honestly say that the tips in this book would have improved my family's communication a great deal. It isn't often easy to see kids as separate individuals with their own personalities and life situations they are navigating. This book provides a practical guide to understanding how to create a healthy line of communication between parents and kids.

Very helpful book. I have teens, so I can relate to all the topics that the author covers. It's loaded with practical information that's easy to use on the spot.
I especially like how this book gives simple direct information without all the extra stories to wade through... like most other books. Being a parent you need information quick, succinct and immediate. This book delivers on all three.

An exploration of Greek Myth with a modern eye.

Mythology looks very different to the modern eye, even in the fantasy genre where magic, gods, and heroes are accepted parts of fictional worlds.
In classical myth, Medousa is the story of a monster, a priestess raped by one god, punished with the loss of her humanity by another, and finally slain by the half-divine son of a third.

Michael Butchin turns the myth on its head by looking at the story from the point of view of a young girl taken as a slave, grown into a young woman punished for refusing to suicide after her rape. This becomes a powerful story of love, grief, and redemption in the face of tragedy.

Other mythic and historical figures make appearances, again as viewed through modern eyes, offering opportunities for comedy, tragedy, and philosophy, which resonates well within the cultural context Butchin is exploring.

Medousa is appropriate for young adult audiences, but does contain (unavoidably) both sexual themes and violence. The book also explores gender roles and GLBTQ themes, again within the context of Greek myth and culture.

Refreshing and successful look at a classical figure

This is not the Greek mythology you were taught as a child. Thank goodness! Medousa is a refreshing and inspired look at an ancient figure, as told from her own point of view. The ancient myths are respectfully maintained, however the story takes a deeper look at what made Medousa into the creature we call "Monster". She isn't quite who we thought she was. She's complex and intelligent, and worthy of profound respect. Character development was phenomenal! I feel like I've known her all my life, and I cared what was happening to her. I found myself knee deep in emotion while experiencing her journey, often times becoming angry, sad, or laughing out loud. I have many favorite parts of this book, but without diving into spoilers, I can't touch on most of them.

While the story never leaves the period, quite a few parallels are made between the time period Medousa lives in and our own modern times. The truly ugly parts of our human experience -- prejudice, injustice, disrespect, violence, and even the horror of rape -- are presented in a way that gives us pause, without being preachy or leaving the relevance of the story. At the same time, the critical importance of friendship is shown as a powerful healing tool. These things are cleverly woven into Medousa's life story in such a way that we can stop to think about them, or just keep reading and enjoy the story.

The book was very enjoyable as a whole. I will likely read it again. I eagerly await the next book written by this author.

Great Revisioning of a Classical Monster

I was immediately intrigued when I came across this book. I have to admit I'm a sucker for those stories where we get to hear the side of the "bad guys," and it certainly seems like classical Greek mythology is in desperate need of a retelling from the point of view of the other side, especially when that other side is female. So I absolutely loved the concept right off the bat.

The book is very detailed and well-researched, and for those of us with an amateur love of Greek mythology, it's a lot of fun to encounter Ajax, Heracles, Helen, and so on and so forth from a different perspective (Ajax is a bashful suitor, Heracles is a drunken screw-up who takes credit for others' deeds, and Helen is one of Medousa's friends and protectors). The author freely admits in the afterword that all these characters are thrown together with no particular attention paid to their "actual" chronology, if such a thing can be said about mythological figures, but the effect is (for me at least) a series of delightful cameos by famous heroes. Medousa herself is a very sympathetic character, and her rehabilitation is welcome and overdue.

My only problem with the book is basically that I think that it was good but it could have been great. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, but I felt that it lacked a certain element of narrative tension. I've been trying to put my finger on exactly what that was, and the best I can do is that we know that Medousa is a tragic figure and that she is inevitably hurtling towards her (unjust) destruction, but in the book this is portrayed as being, to a certain extent, bad luck. Which is entirely realistic--people like Medousa are generally the victims of bad luck--but with the echoes of Greek tragedy reverberating in the background, it was slightly unsatisfying for me. Because we see everything from Medousa's point of view, we never really get to know why Athena wanted to punish her, which left the story a little bit flat in my opinion.

That being said, overall "Medousa" is an excellent revision of a number of classical Greek myths and well worth the read for those that enjoy myth-based fantasy. Furthermore, the fact that most of the main characters are female warriors of one sort or another as another very refreshing aspect of the book: instead of having a token warrior princess, practically the entire cast is made up of Spartan battle-trained women, Amazons, goddesses, Gorgons, etc. etc...we're not used to having that many women in our books, and it was yet another good reason to enjoy "Medousa."

This was an excellent collection of sci-fi and fantasy short stories that all fans of the genres are likely to enjoy. Of course, as with any anthology I enjoyed some stories more than others.

Now, as this is an Immerse or Die anthology the review does need to be written in IOD style.

WTF #1: "The First Man in the World": The first sentence of this first story was, to me, rather convoluted and long. It took me several reads of this sentence to fully understand it. I do not think there is anything technically wrong with it, it was simply a lot to digest and get my head around in one sentence.

Kudos #1: "The First Man in the World": The best use of intentional echoing headwords I have ever seen. Passages like the following and several other similar passages were incredibly effective and told the story perfectly.
"He was thirty-eight years old.
He was newborn.
He was one hundred and eighty-four years old."

WTF #2: Theriac, Location 3623. The word "throughthat" should have been 2 words, "through that".

WTF #3: The Rakam, Location 4866. The original sentence is: "He tells one of his crew, a women larger than me, to stop me." As this is referring to one person it should have read "a woman larger" rather than the plural "women".

Now, having just 3 WTFs (1 of them just my opinion, not a true error) in an entire anthology is a really well done and well edited book. Kudos to the authors and editors for such a well done book.

As to the stores my favorites were "The First Man in the World", "All the Way", and "Heft"

My least favorites (although by no means bad stories, just not my favorites" were "Scales Fall", "Theriac" and "The Ant Tower" (possibly because I had already read the novel and it was so much more filled out).

The stories "The Dowager's Largess" and "The Rakam" did not feel like short stories. Both of these felt more like the first section of a novel and both left me wanting to read more about these characters and these worlds.

So, once again, overall this is an excellent collection and I highly recommend it to all sci-fi and fantasy fans!

Read six stories so far. All most excellent.

I first read The Rakam by Karpov Kinrade. I loved this! It has a feel like Science Fiction or the Fantasies of yesteryear; like a cross of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Andre Norton, and L.E. Modesitt, Jr. The writing style also reminded me of other of my favorite authors from my younger years. This is a good start to a series I can tell I will enjoy, and am looking forward to the next one! I really cannot tell much of the plot without giving away too much. Large, occasionally flying whales as transport. Spearing. Very nasty predators. Three major Families/Clans. And a pursuit.

And also The First Man In The World / Misha Burnett; This had the feel of hopeful Science Fiction, maybe 60's, 70's - it made me weepy (in a good way). I really miss having stories of this type and quality.
Three Demon Gambit / JS Morin; As the editor's intro says, have seen many of these type stories, but very nicely done, and you really don't know what's going to happen until the end. Very nice. (And sometimes roommates suck. Minor spoiler.)
Rolling The Bones / Richard Levesque; I did guess what the point of this was, or I should say the what would eventually happen; but was not sure. Also very well written.
All The Way / Graham Storr; This has a very hard science fiction feel; but seems closer to being relevant compared to when I first read about the premise, and also with more of a feel how one's personality might be altered. (I'm cryptic to avoid a spoiler)
Scales Fall / Dave Higgins; This made me think of how I would feel to lose my darling. I totally understand where Philip is coming from, but was wrong about details; and I am still not sure where they ended up. (here or there)

Will try to update as I finish more. But so far, everything far exceeds my expectations for new (to me) authors.

A Blast to Read!

All These Shiny Worlds was a blast to read... and I don't generally read anthologies of short stories. These, however, were extremely well done and I find it difficult to pick out a favorite among the stories. Very few of them were entirely predictable, although I guessed at the ending of a couple of the stories. On the other hand, those endings could have just as easily turned out differently without hurting the story line at all, so maybe I just got lucky. If I had to pick favorites, I'd go with The Ant Tower by Christopher Ruz, Rolling the Bones by Richard Levesque, Bronwen's Dowry by Belinda Mellor, All the Way by Graham Stores, and The Rakam by Karpov Kinrade, not necessarily in that order. But make no mistake, all the stories are excellent. Oh... and All These Shiny Worlds is a fast read... maybe too fast. It leaves you hungry for the next ImmerseOrDie anthology.
