David Unger PhD, MFT has worked with parents and their teens throughout his career. He is the Director of Counseling for the Upper School at a private school in Los Angeles and the former Chair of the Graduate Psychology Program at Antioch University in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

A trusted friend for any parent.

As a general rule I don’t read self-help books. But, I have been
having some challenges with my teenage son and a friend recommended
this book to me. I don’t know about other parenting books but this one
has got to be right up there among the best. First off, it doesn’t
read like a book. It is more like you a having a conversation with a
friend who has been there done that and can empathize with you. Dr.
Unger has a great sense of humor and perspective and his suggestions
are on the money.
My son is starting to be interested in girls and I suspect alcohol and
the chapters on sex and drugs really were helpful. It really helped me
clarify my values and perspective and helped me change my approach to
dealing with my son. I feel much more confident and assured and I can
tell my son is happier and, get this, more responsible and engaged
with me. Can’t beat that.

I have read more than my share of self-help books and have to say this is one of the very best. It has more practical useful advice than most books and the author’s suggestions are easy to recall and put to good use. Even when my 13 year old daughter and I were getting into it, I was able to remember some of his suggestions and was able to put them to use with positive results. I even had her read a few pages and just that helps her carry her end of conversations much better. We have been having issues around chores around the house and I must admit I have become more of a nag than I would like to admit. Reading the chapter on chores, or Areas of Responsibility as they are called really helped my family develop a new attitude and approach to doing things around the house. I totally recommend this book.

I first read this book when a client of mine with teenagers recommended it to me. I have been a therapist for over twenty years and I can count on one hand the number of self-help books I feel comfortable recommending. Reading this book I could tell that Dr Unger has worked with teenagers and their parents. He has a soft yet firm hand as he guides you through all the pitfalls of these challenging years. I can comfortably say you won't be disappointed with this book and either will your child. While I think the book is primarily geared towards teens, if you have a pre-teen you will find much useful information. Teenagers can be a handful, and parents can use all the support and guidance they can get. This book will give them a big sigh of relief.
