About the Author
William Courter, MD, earned degrees from Williams College, New York Medical College, and the University of Southern California. A board-certified physician in psychiatry and neurology, he has served as the associate medical director of the Orange County Health Care Agency in Orange County, California, and as a national consultant for difficult medical, psychiatric, and substance abuse cases across the United States.
Courter has been a keynote speaker for multiple organizations on health, career paths, relationships, and personal development. He is the founder of the Boomer Health Institute and the author of The Boomer Survivor Kit: An Indispensable Guide For Yourself * Your Relationships * Your Life. He has created two websites, www.boomerhealthinstitute.com and http://www.drbillcourter.com/, and produced a series of YouTube videos.
Courter currently lives in Coto de Caza, California, with his wife of over thirty years. His two daughters also live and work in Southern California.

A must read for every parent and every parent to be

A truly wonderful book about a fathers love for his daughters and the raw emotions he goes through as they leave home to attend college. This book had my attention from the very first page and I could not put it down until I had finished reading it. I experienced many emotions as I read the letters – I experienced laughter, love, happiness, contemplation, sadness, excitement and aha moments.
I felt the fathers anguish during the first few months after his eldest daughter left home, his sense of loss and the challenges he experienced adjusting to life without his daughters presence in the home. I understood as he tried to hang onto his parental role and his difficulty in standing back as a parent and letting his daughters live the lives they wanted to. And I celebrated when he got off the emotional roller coaster ride he was on and finally accepted that his daughters were now independent adults.
It takes a lot of courage to lay bare the soul in such a raw emotional way as this author has done. But this book is not only about the relationship between a father and his daughters, it also contains wonderful words of advice about life. I particularly loved the advice to take 6 month breaks for personal development at several stages throughout life – thank you for the advice. I had never considered this an option before and I will most certainly be considering it at option for me in the near future.

A Gift from a Father's Heart

I found this book to be a heartwarming tribute from a father to his two daughters. Dr. Courter wrote emails to his daughters as they went off to college to encourage them as they moved to the next phase of their life. The original emailed letters were gifted to his daughters and a select group of the letters are published here. What a great gift.
This book can be used by parents to encourage them to support their young adults transitioning to college. It is also a great idea for us to do ourselves to create a lasting memory of a special time in our families' lives.
I especially related to this book because I keep a journal and I encourage keeping a journal for your children. Even if you don't keep a journal, this book is a sweet read with wisdom and love from a father's heart.
This would make a fabulous gift book to new dads, daughters heading to college, and father's on the edge of that rite of passage where they send their adult children off into the world.
Well written and encouraging, I recommend this book.

Amazing journey of two generations documented in loving letters by a father...also a gift to the reader!

What an incredible journey - for both parent and child! These letters offer a window into the journey of one father who is willing to share his love and respect along with his fears and perceived failures with his college-age daughters. Written to bridge the geographic distance between him and his college-age daughters, the letters actually serve to bridge the emotional distance while documenting all of their journeys. And that's what i found most compelling. The author's devotion to his children supercedes many a parent's need to be seen as the adult, never failing, never erring and always supportive. I loved how some of his letters smacked of the worrying parent, while in others he bared his soul.
'A Father's Letters' is a gift not only to his daughters and future generations of his family. The collection is a gift to the reader as well.
