A book of refreshing honesty, and soulfully relevant in today's challenging world.

This book, unlike so many of the books flooding the market these days, talks to the reader in a real and human voice. Reading it is like having a conversation with a friend sitting in a park, a friend who has a compelling way of looking at the world, someone who has an engaging approach to sharing personal anecdotes that leave you nodding your head, thinking "yes, I can relate to that."
There's much in this book that I've felt is true, but find it rare, and refreshing, to see it expressed in ways I find myself pondering, or even expressed at all. For example, in his chapter entitled "Role Models," Mr. Singleton reminds us that "[w]hether it is voluntary or involuntary, you are a role model. Somebody is always watching. We have to be mindful of what we are doing..." It's something that bears reminding.
On "Affection," the author states, "...one of the best qualities a man can have is sensitivity. [It] allows a man to cry when he needs to, and to show love and affection to his family, and fellow man." Guys, abandon the machismo; it's an empty act. Genuine affection can serve as a balm to the human soul, emotional nourishment to those we love.
The heartbeat of this book is the family and its crucial roll in the development of emotionally healthy lives, what determines the success or failure of a society. Mr. Singleton uses his own family experiences--both while growing up and as a father in his own family--as a reference point in his astute observations. And the pictures he's included are clearly straight out of the family photo album, bringing real faces to the world Mr. Singleton draws from. Like the author's voice, the photos brings an authenticity to this book.
As Thomas Paine wrote over 200 years ago, "[t]hese are the times that try men's souls." I think most of us feel this statement is applicable today as well. This book serves as an unassuming guide for men who welcome some common sense perspectives on navigating life in the 21st Century, and the affirmation of values they hold true, but sometimes wonder whether or not are still holding sway in our society at large.
